UPDATE: KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – A suspected jewelry thief on the run from Texas authorities killed himself in a West Knoxville hotel parking lot as police tried to take him into custody.
Knoxville police confirm they received a tip that Timothy Allen Liess, 44 was staying at the Extended StayAmerica on Winston Road in the West Hills community on Monday. Officers located his car in the parking lot and decided keep it under surveillance.
Liess was finally spotted just before midnight as he walked out of the hotel toward his vehicle. Three officers approached him and ordered him to get down on his knees, but as they did, he removed a handgun from his pocked and committed suicide.
Police officials said they had been warned by Texas authorities that Liess had vowed not to go back to jail.
Police in Austin, Texas had been searching for Liess since October 27th. According to a media release, the Austin Police Department had issued a number of felony theft warrants for his arrest. The warrants were related to an ongoing jewelry crime spree in which he would rob stores and pawn the stolen items at shops across the southeast or on Craigslist.com. In one case he was thought to have stolen an $8,000 diamond from an Austin jeweler.
Knoxville police confirmed he was wanted in Knox County for writing a worthless check.

I'm not quite sure whats more shocking...that this really happened or the heartless comments you people enjoy writing. Did you ever stop to think this man has a family who are in a pain you'll never know?! Did you ever stop to think he has a son who I hope to God doesn't read any of this nonesense?! You people know NOTHING about this man!!! He was in a pain you'll never know and has tried to get help only to find there is none without health insurance!!! This man is not someone who has led a life of crime! He has been an upstanding citizen his entire life, so RICK let me tell you, I CAN SAY HE WAS A GOOD FAMILY MAN!!!! Before you open your mouth about something you don't know about again, stop and remember. God is the judge NOT YOU!!!!
#1 your tax dollars would not have paid for him to live his life in jail. The majority of prision funding comes from state monies and he was to be extridited back to TX. Therefore it would have come from the budget of the state of TX not TN. Secondly I'm all for the death penalty but not if it's not warranted. To have met this man, it is very shocking to find out that he had killed himself. I can only imagine how bad prison must have been to kill yourself rather than just go back.
