Knoxville (WVLT) -- The Knoxville Police Department and FBI have arrested a scam artist who escaped from a Georgia Minimum Security facility in mid-March.
Charles K. Stephens, 37, was serving sentences for various fraud, forgery, and theft charges when he escaped from the Clayton Transitional Center. He then made his way to Knoxville where he was living with an acquittance when authorities captured him.
According to KPD, Stephens scammed many people and businesses in the area by portraying himself as a millionaire with ties to several successful former University of Tennessee Football players. He targeted poor and rich people as well as reputable businesses around town.
Stephens purchased vehicles, expensive jewelry, and even a home through his scams over the last few weeks before his capture on Thursday.
KPD and the FBI are still investigating the case while Stephens awaits extradition back to Georgia where according to the state's Department of Corrections his maximum release date is in June 2009.
If you feel you have been scammed by Charles Stephens, you are urged to call KPD at 215-7000 or the Knoxville Field Office of the FBI at 544-0751.
