KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Authorities were able to quickly captured three suspects wanted for a Thursday night South Knoxville apartment complex shooting.
The shooting happened just after 8:00 p.m. at Stonewall I apartments on Sevier Avenue. Reports from the scene indicate police arrived on the scene to find Steven Mayes on the ground between two apartment buildings, with a gunshot wound to his leg.
Witnesses told officers three black men were involved in the shooting and they fled in a white Buick sedan. The description was immediately broadcast across the police radio. Moments later, a pair of officers responding to the scene spotted a car matching the description with three black men inside and they pulled it over on the on ramp from Sevier Avenue to James White Parkway.
During the stop they found a rifle and 9mm pistol in the trunk.
The three men were taken back to the scene and Mayes was able to identify all three suspects and their car before he was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment. By early Friday morning, he was no longer listed as a patient at the hospital.
Timothy Tillery, 20, Stephan Freeman, 18 and a juvenile were taken back to KPD headquarters for questioning. They have since been charged with especially aggravated robbery.
Knoxville Police says Tillery was out on bond awaiting trial on four counts of aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery after allegedly forcing employees into a walk-in freezer at gunpoint during a holdup at the Magnolia Ave. McDonald's in March.
