Church says location puts new life in Seymour

SEYMOUR, Tenn. (WVLT) -- With a hammer and nail, they aim to give a congregation a home. Volunteers and members of Seymour's Summit Church are working hard to move their Sunday mornings indoors.
"We meet in the parking lot," says Senior Pastor Bryan McKnight. "Our kids meet at a driving range, our nursery is at hair design." For now, that's outside their new space at 8729 Chapman Highway. "It just seemed to be the perfect place for us. Rather than building a new building, we wanted to put life into an old place."
That old place is raising some eyebrows though, sandwiched in-between a massage business and a bar. "We didn't do this to flatten the face of anybody. We did this because South Knox needs a community revamping," says McKnight.
Daniel's Bar and Grille has been in its location for about twenty years, says a staffer. She wouldn't speak on camera, but called the move, "a double standard," says they'd never be able to move in, had the church been there first.
McKnight says the owner of the Asian Healthy Massage center is friendly with the Summit's crowd. She shared concerns with Volunteer TV News, saying she's considering moving because the church's proximity makes her customers uncomfortable.
"The morality is why we put a church between a bar and a massage parlor," says McKnight. Even the church's space was last a honky-tonk sports bar. "We came in took up the dance floor, took out the mechanical bull, broke down the bar."
A local contractor has volunteered his efforts to the project. With the help of other skilled church members, the group has gutted the building. "We basically have started over from scratch with everything from the plumbing to framing, all of the wiring, electrical stuff has had to be redone," says John Hauker, a contractor who attends the Summit.
Saturday members of the Wears Valley Boy Scout Troop #278 were lending a hand as well. "It makes me feel pretty good," says Tyler Hillger, 14, "Since I've been helping out, it makes you want to help out more."
McKnight says that's the spirit he wants to cultivate to get the building finished by Thanksgiving. They continue to meet in the building's parking lot, weather permitting. For more information about the Summit Church, you can click on the link below.

I think it is a real statement of these people of the church to reach out to people in this community, not in judgement but out of love to reach these people where they are just as Jesus Christ did on earth,i think this shows that this is a real church with real people who just want to worship God and share hope with others,i am greatly encouraged by this example and wish them the best
"We didn't do this to flatten the face of anybody. We did this because South Knox needs a community revamping," says McKnight. "The morality is why we put a church between a bar and a massage parlor," says McKnight. Okay, which is it? You judge the area to need revitalization or you judge the existing businesses to be immoral? The massage business is already considering moving which will cause another empty space, and you have effectively destroyed the bar owner's nest egg because if he decides to sell the business, the new owner will never be able to get a liquor license. Another empty space. You can't put a bar within so many feet of a church, or as you would call "God's house" I remind you that 'Two or more people, gathered together in the name of God, is a church'. My house is God's house, the whole universe is God's house! Who else should be worried about your motives and judgements offered up in the name of God?
Just why can a Church move in close to a bar but a bar can't move in close to a Church? It sounds like double standards to me.
