Knoxville (WVLT) -- More than 400 people took part in a race on Sunday that didn't need to have a winner.
Today was the Second Annual Celebrate Your Life 5K at Victor Ashe Park.
The race was organized by the Greater Knoxville Chapter of Girls on the Run and marked the end of a 12-week after school program they put on twice a year.
Over the last 12 weeks, 172 girls between the ages of 8 and 12 trained to run in the 5K.
According to the organizations executive director, the goal of Girls on the Run is to encourage a lifetime of healthy living and self-respect.
"We hope that they take away from here what they learned over the 12 weeks and that they learn to give back to their communities," said Kristy Altman who is executive director of the Greater Knoxville Chapter of Girls on the Run. "We hope that they learn to communicate well with others and we hope they come away knowing that physical activity is very important in life and that getting out and running and walking and staying in shape helps them live longer lives."
