KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A North Knoxville Kroger supermarket manager was sporting a bright orange mohawk on the Vols' gameday Saturday, because he lost a bet with his employees in a big way.

Kroger store manager Tom Coburn says he challenged his employees to hit the $3,000 employee contribution mark for the store's annual United Way drive, $1,800 more than the North Broadway Kroger's 2008 contribution total of $1,200. His employees met the challenge, and Coburn told store workers that he'd shave his head into a mohawk and dye it orange for the Vols game of their choice. They chose the UT v. Kentucky game.

"Looking at the relationship to the community, we knew that our employees wanted to do more, but may not have been given the right opportunity," Coburn says. "Of course, they wanted to see my head shaved."

Not only did the employees reach the $3,000 benchmark, they surpassed it by raising more than $4,800 through employee contributions in 2009. That's four times more than the employees' 2008 donations, and $1,800 more than the previous year.

"We were very proud that they were able to raise $4,800," Coburn says.

Coburn's Kroger store is located at 2217 North Broadway Street, near Fulton High School.
