KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Knoxville Police have two suspects in custody after a high speed police chase in northwest Knoxville.
It started just before 4:00 p.m. when the pair allegedly tried to sell stolen goods to the Big Orange Pawn Shop on Western Avenue. A clerk called police and responding officers tried to stop the suspects, who were pulling away from the shop in a blue 1992 Saturn sedan.
A chase ensued, leading officers west through the county and into the Karns Community. At least one Knoxville Police officer was involved in a property crash at the intersection of Western Avenue and Copper Kettle Street while chasing the suspect. Video from the scene shows that a KPD cruiser collided with a private vehicle that wasn't involved in the chase and damage from the crash appeared minor.
The chase ended in a field about two miles from Karns High School at the intersection of Crosslane Road and Byington Solway Road. The suspects apparently drove their car off the roadway and fled on foot.
Exclusive airborne video from WVLT Volunteer TV Eye-in-the-Sky Pete Michaels showed one of the suspects being taken into custody moments later along some train tracks.
KPD officials identified the suspects as James Earl Jett, 35 and Nolan Wiginton, 21. Both are expected to face a number of traffic charges related to the chase. Jett was charged with two counts of fleeing in a vehicle, two counts of fleeing on foot, two counts theft over $1,000 and possession of burglary tools. Wiginton was charged with fleeing on foot and theft over $1,000.
The pair has also been linked to at least two home burglaries in the Seymour/South Knox County area and Jett was positively identified in a shoplifting and auto theft incident at a local Krogers from earlier in the week.
Officers also indicated they had recovered two guns from the blue Saturn as well as two laptops, a video game system, a digital camera and a DVD player. KPD crime lab technicians were still processing the vehicle late Friday night for additional stolen items.
