KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT/WYMT) -- 'Tis the season of giving, and every year, the Cumberland Baptist Church on Western Avenue travels to Kentucky to help spread a little Christmas cheer.
Tuesday was not a typical school day at Highland-Turner Elementary.
The school's principal said, Everything was covered in plastic, but everyone knew what was (underneath)."
There was everything from video games to board games, basketballs, hair products and Bibles.
Kids were allowed to go through and pick out whatever they wanted.
"(I got) arts and crafts, paint, makeup," one girl said.
"I got a woodshop kit," one boy said.
Margaret Davis with the Mission of Hope in Knoxville says they love coming here each year to bring joy to kids.
"Breathitt County is one of the neediest areas," Davis said. "Kids need hope, love."
Mission of Hope brought two gifts for each of the 300 kids, but Davis says its not just about the presents.
"We're teaching kids it's about giving, not getting," she said.
Sixth grader Brittany Haddix says she cannot wait to bring home presents to her family.
"I got mom a scarf and dad a sweater."
"That's what it's all about," Davis said. "To give joy to others."
As the Mission of Hope packed up to head back to Knoxville, Highland-Turner's principal said they had just done that.
The Cumberland Baptist volunteers will be back at the school in August to help out with a back-to-school backpack special for kids.
