CAMPBELL CO., Tenn. (WVLT) -- Once again, Knoxville has dodged it. But you can find plenty of snow in some parts of Tennessee. Up to six inches fell in parts of Campbell County.
The streets were pretty quiet in Jellico as some Campbell County residents dug out from several inches. "Electric has been out in part of the town," said Shawn Farris. "A lot of the town is still without power."
Farris was one of about 20 members of the New Hope Tabernacle of Fairview offering a warm meal to residents of Jellico Towers.
It's a holiday tradition, said Farris. But Saturday's snow didn't slow it down. "The dinner couldn't have been planned for a better day because so many people can't get out and about so this will give them a good warm meal for today."
"I heard that we was going to get a little bit, but I didn't expect it because we never get snow here," said 12-year-old Hunter Creekmoore.
"It could have been a lot worse," said Ranger Roby Ray at Cove Lake State Park. Some places it was. Heavy snow on I-75 through the night was been tough on travel plans. "State Parks were called out by TEMA in East Tennessee to patrol the interstates, and between here and Jellico, we patrolled until 3 in the morning."
The American Red Cross set up shelter at Jellico High School. One family showed up for assistance.
Flurries continued near Stinking Creek, which could mean ongoing slick spots for drivers. "As wet as the roads are and especially back roads, if it freezes, we'll have a lot of black ice, and that's a big problem," said Ray.
The biggest concern for drivers is refreezing. Wet spots now are likely to become icy as the temps fall.
