Newsom, Christian Families Reaction To Rally Save Email Print
Reporter: Kim Bedford

Knoxville (WVLT) -- The parents of Christopher Newsom and Channon Christian are responding to the racially motivated rallies.

Volunteer TV's Kim Bedford sat down with them and found some differing opinions all around.

Chris Newsom's room is exactly how he left it the day he left for his date with girlfriend Channon Christian.

The brutally murdered young couple is at the center of the rallies.

"I don't see the purpose of the rallies," said Mary Newsom. "I don't think Chris would've been impressed with it or would've liked it. In fact, I think he might have been embarrassed by it."

Chris' mother, Mary, says the protesters are doing much more harm than good, but her husband, Hugh, disagrees.

"I don't object to their right to assemble and project their cause," said Hugh Newsom. "I think they feel they're doing it for Chris and Channon."

Hugh says he is, however, upset with the groups not having all of their facts straight.

"The police and District Attorney's Office have assured me that there was no parts missing from either body," Hugh said, "they have distorted that."

The Newsom's do agree that Chris and Channon's murder was as torturous as it was because of the color of their skin.

"Would they have done that to a black couple?" Hugh asked. "I don't think so."

"With all the things they did to them, what else could you call it but hate," said Mary.

But Channon Christian's father, Gary, says it wasn't about race.

"I think any kind of crime like that's a hate crime," said Gary Christian. Was it racial? No, I don't think so."

Gary says he doesn't like his daughter's pictures posted all over for the protesters personal agenda.

"I don't like anybody using my daughter," Gary said. "Everybody go home, Get this court over with. Let the people pay for what they did."

Whatever happens, the Newsom's say they just want their son to be honored.

"We love you Chris," the parents said.

The Newsom's say they, like the protesters, don't understand why the murder has not received national attention.

Mr. Christian tells us the protesters came to Channon's grave site recently and wants them to know that they better not enter onto the private property again.

Being as far away as I am, I can't tell what things are going around America. Quite a distance between the cultures of the two countries, and I don't even know IF I want to go there. I've had a few positive examples of people over there, however. Indira Ghandi was killed because he wanted peace. Galilei was charged and sentenced to death because he wanted truth. The children of Betty Williams were killed because who they were. I do not know what Channon and Chris were killed for. Everyone says things, they all have their theories, but it disgusts me that some use their fate for their own purposes. People who have left this world deserve peace, and they should not be dragged back as violently as they have. This is just not ok. My condolences for the families of Channon and Chris. Don't pity them however - they are in a better place. People who talk about them shoud be pitied, their parents for their loss, and most of all, who committed the crime. They have a worse future ahead of them.

My prayers are with the families of Chris and Channon. You have been through enough. As far as the media on this story - local media - you have your information, make sure the facts are correct, don't over exaggerate, the crimes are horrible enough. This info should be world wide. The faces of the criminals should be on the news worldwide so we can see who committed the horrific crimes. The public needs to be aware of the crime no matter what the color of the skin. It was a violent crime from one human to another human. You don't need to harrass the suffering families for any more info. .

The spiraling violent crime rate in South Florida has been suddenly, and measurably reduced. How? By enacting the 'stand your ground' law which allows potential crime victims to carry and use firearms when they are attacked, without fear of subsequent prosecution because they 'didn't attempt to flee'. Tennessee needs such a law, to give citizens the ability to personally prevent these kinds of barbaric atrocities in the future.

This crime is absolutely monstrous. However the white supremacists add insult to injury by taking the deaths of these young people to spread their propoganda. e these two young kids to rest in peace. Reagardless of what coverage it gotten I'm sure the culprits will get the death penalty. Of course their death will be pleasant compared to what they have inflicted on Christian and Channon. I think the real issue should not be what the main stream media does or does not report, but on justice being served in the courtroom.

Well, today, in WV, 6 whites were arrested due to kidnapping and raping a black woman. While it is horrible that this happened to her, it just goes to show you that the media has done nothing to bring to light the murders of Channon and Christopher and that if you are white, you will be prosecuted for a hate crime - if you are black (or any other race) you get a free ticket to ride.

2 years ago a situation happened to my daughter, She was tied to her bed and TORTURED for 12 hours by 5 men. I have my daughter today, and am praying that Justice will be served for your children. I know the thoughts that are running through some minds in this world, I heard them in a court room, for a year. And some aren't sorry for what they do. I pray for the vicitms families and their friends. The affects of this will live forever. My heart breaks for you, I will certainly ask all to add you to their prayers. And not to have national media coverage for such a brutal murder is a kick in the teeth to this beautiful couple and their families. I will never be the same from my own childs tragedy, It just changes you forever. I am so sorry for your pain and loss. May these families and friends find healing for within. God Bless you .

I have followed this crime since I was made aware of it in may.My heartfelt sympathy goes out to both families.Leave them alone.Next May,the perps will get their day in court.Randy Nichols, the DA has until 9/1/07 to seek death penalty.Chris/Channon cry out from the grave for the decision to put them to death. This was absolutely 100% a true reverse race crime!! Nobody, but nobody that has the facts will think otherwise.Only the spine;less law enforcement/or media that dont want to be politically incorrect. As for these beanbrained white power people.Take your show down the road, let the families be.

I want to offer my condolences to Channon and Christopher's families. Are there any memorial funds that I can donate to remember them? My thoughts and prayers are with the families.

WHETHER IT WAS RACIALY MOTIVATED OR A HATE CRIME, ONLY ANIMALS COULD DO THINGS LIKE THAT...AND I HONESTLY BELIEVE IF IT WAS WHITES THAT COMMITED THE BEASTLY MURDERS IT WOULD STILL BE PLASTERD ALL OVER THE PAPERS AS A HATE CRIME. AL SHARPTON AND JESSEE JACKSON WOULD BE MARCHING UP AND DOWN GAY THE STREETS OF KNOXVILLE TODAY....

everyone will have to accept the inevitable truth about forced integration. it breeds racial hatred on all sides. its time to draw up borders and keep the races seperated.

My heart is with both families. I went to the rally simply to honor Christopher and Channon and stood on a corner away from protesters and counter protesters. It just felt like a reason for a huge argument. I would like to see a memorial service more dedicated to the couple and not an age old battle of the KKK.

My heart sank when I read this in the email I got. Just awful. I cannot believe a human being can be so evil & cruel as to commit such a crime against another human being. And about the lack of media coverage.. we had news crews swarming awhile back over the cheerleading coach scandal.. our small town made national news for that? So where's all the media coverage for this? ..I know I didn't hear about it on the news...I got it from email. Such a sad story.

I just recieved an email on this today. From a friend in Canada and I listen and watch the news everyday. I was just sickend all day by this and what these two young people went thru. For what? I can not imagine this happening to my son or daughter. Why have people all over not heard about this? This coverage should have hit every home in the United States and beyond. I pray these 5 people never see the light of day and I feel they should be punished in the same why they took these two lives. My prayers are with the fmailys May God Help you to get thru this time and ease your pain. God Speed

this should have been all over the cnn and fox news shows but I have not heard anything until just today when I received a email on it I forwarded it to as many people as I could this crime is one of the worst I have heard and is an should be on the national news why isn't it? I would have to say where is Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton now??? These people should all get the death penalty and it should be carried out in the same manner as they killed this young couple!! They don't deserve a peaceful death the victims certainly didn't get one!!!

What can you say? If a Caucasian calls this a "hate crime", he is branded a racist by Jamie Satterfield,Jack McElroy, the Knoxville DA's office, and the other bleeding heart liberals. I can tell you I am not a racist, and I do not think that I am at heart. However, how come no one comes down on African-American racists. I have never been a victim of a "hate crime" so to speak, but I have been exposed to racism by African-Americans. I will not go into detail some comments made to me from African Americans about Caucasians, but it is funny how they do not perceive it as racism because they have been in "oppression." Never mind the fact that some African-Americans born after the civil right movement have hate in their heart. Media and TV proclaim that racism is taught early, but they only cover and comment when this involves African-Americans. Anyway, the reason why upstanding Caucasian Americans do not hold rallies is because they would lose everything; therefore, you have screaming moron racists holding protests, thus creating more of a laughinstock than serious debate. However, if good-natured Caucasians hold rallies to protest black-on-white "hate crimes" they are branded "racists" whereas Jesse "Womanizer" Jackson and Al Sharpton are branded "revolutionaries." Can someone tell me if Nancy Grace has ever, ever covered this story? I thought she was supposed to stand up for victims families'. Is she running scared, too. The reason other violent cases are being covered on shows like these is because the race issue is usually (key word "usually") is not involved. I have left many messages on her Grace's show's voice mail, to no avail. I guess she doesn't care either. Even Fox News does not want to cover this story except in five minute segments every so often.

I would just like to say that I went to middle and high school with Chris and he never seemed like the person that would like to see this happening. Their deaths were tragic and they desesrve to rest in peace. Their names shouldn't be smeared all over the news and internet as I have seen. Fabricated stories about the events should not be circulating. The animals who did this to those two young lives have been caught and hopefully justice will prevail. Let their memory live on about the people they were and not how they died.

This murder case did not receive national attention because the victims were white and the assailants were black, period. I can also assume that this comment will never be approved for publication. Thank you for further eroding my confidence in this dying nation. George Taylor

Let me be clear, I feel confident that our front-line Knoxville Police Department officers are very competent and professional. I venture to say the quality of our KPD officers would rival any other metro police department in the United States. Further, I very much appreciate KPD service to myself and the Knoxville community. ... This correspondence does not question the KPD department per se. The following correspondence questions whether we have the best person(i.e. Sterling Owen) to lead KPD. Especially considering we now have Tim Hutchison available to lead KPD. ... The following statements contain some of the most troubling words involving this case - -------------------------------- " * Davidson and Boyd allegedly had been on a veritable robbery spree in the past few months, robbing restaurant employees, committing home invasion robberies and plotting a bank robbery. " -- Affidavit from Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracy Stone " He told Judge Richard Baumgartner at a hearing Thursday in Knox County Criminal Court that prosecutors intend to show that the Jan. 8 robbery charges were part of an "ongoing" crime spree of which the slayings were a part. " -- Indictment from Assistant District Attorney General Leland Price ------------------------------ The words, from the Federal Prosecutor and Attorney General, that trouble me most involve the "crime spree". Those words are "...few months..." and '"...ongoing..."'. Therefore, I ask, 'What is the acceptable length of time for criminals to be caught during a 'crime spree' -- days, weeks, months ? Further, does Owen direct his officers to make money for the city and KPD(i.e. "To Fine and Neglect"), rather than actively pursue the bad buys(i.e. "To Serve and Protect") ?
