KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – An Irish song writing duo was in East Tennessee Tuesday night, and regardless of what church denomination you belong to, you’ve probably heard at least one of their hymns.
The music of Keith and Kristen Getty can be heard in churches around the world. On Tuesday they preformed a concert for about 1,000 people gathered at Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church in West Knoxville.
According to the couple, their love of music comes as naturally as their love of the lord and for one another.
“I think there are two things we were passionate about,” said Keith, “one was to write songs that united the church. Old generation, young generation, pipe organ churches, bands, all churches around the world. Most of them that have no music at all and music is something that unified a congregation."

Thank you Alan for this report. The concert was a tremendous encouragement to me. The missionaries who were here for Cedar Springs' annual missions conference had a special encouragement from the Gettys as the audience joined them in great songs of worship. There must have been 1500 there.
I was at this concert, and it was a lovely lovely expression of faith and the evolving culture of hymn-writing. Keith calls their work 'modern hymns' and it's true. These songs are singable, unlike the power-anthems that are featured by other artists such as Third Day and Casting Crowns. Don't get me wrong, those groups are great, but they choose keys that are not healthy for the average singer's range and tessitura. Keith and Kristyn's work really fits well in the average voice range. That's why more people sing their hymns in services around here. Other artists' music is set too high for the guys, too low for the women (unless they sing up the octave), which really makes little sense for approachability. Thanks for being there last night, Alan, it was nice to see someone covering "good news" in East TN, as opposed to the 'bad news' that keeps getting the top stories.
