Group says Sevier Co. Commission violating Constitution
For more than three decades, The Lord's Prayer has opened each and every Sevier County Commission meeting. But all of a sudden, someone in the community isn't happy, and is calling on a Washington organization to make it stop.

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- One complaint. One prayer. And one Washington organization trying to stop it. Saying the Sevier County Commission is violating the separation of church and state. And only catering to Christians.

"We live in a country where the rights of everyone must be respected, including minorities and those who hold a minority point of view. The majority doesn't get to run rough-shot over everybody else simply because they are a majority," said Ron Boston of Americas United.

Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters says they've been praying before Commission meetings for at least the last 32-years he's been in office. And he doesn't plan on stopping. And if a court order comes down to stop it, one commissioner says let's fight.

"I would like to take it to court as a challenge to the ruling."

All Sevier County Commissioners were copied on a letter from Amercans United that was addressed to Mayor Waters. Tommy McGaha didn't take it seriously.

"When I first received it I thought it was a joke."

But the Commissioner soon realized it wasn't. And shares the Mayor's view that the prayer will continue and a religious picture will remain on the wall.

McGaha said "This is part of our culture. This is part of our history. This is part of us since we were founded as a country. that this has been taking place and I really don't see a problem with it."

At Knox County Commission meetings, Chairman Strickland calls upon individual Commissioners to lead a prayer of his of her choosing. And Strickland, like those in Sevier County, isn't going to stop.

"I enjoy having a prayer before Commission. I think it sets the tone. It helps us. I enjoy doing it and I will continue until I'm told not to," Commission Chairman Stickland, said.

McGaha said "If you stop doing everything that offends someone, pretty soon you couldn't do anything."

Where in the constitution is the phrase 'separation of church and state'? No where. The only thing the constitution says is in Amendment I,Clause I "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;". It does not say that a state or local governing body must refrain from all religious activities.

Beth: Yes we do have freedom of speech, so the upstanding member of society who brought this to the AU’s attention has the freedom to say whatever he wants about this prayer problem. Also, I don’t know if you know, but we are by no means a Christian nation. If you want to live in a country run by religion I suggest Iran, I hear they love it there (especially being under the iron fist of a god). By the way, the Obama administration is actually doing a lot for the secular community, not long ago they welcomed the American Humanist Association and other groups for the first-ever national policy briefing with the nontheist community. Lee: I am sorry to tell you, but there is no separation of the country, the laws that apply up north also apply in the south.

It never fails to amaze me at the people that want to take the 10 commandents, prayer, and anything that does with God out of our Government offices, schools, any public place that lets the world know we are a christian nation. Our country was based on these beliefs and the ones that complain are the first ones to ask God to help them when they are in trouble. I say if you don't like it go to another country where your beliefs are more like theirs. We christians are the majority but sometimes we fail to stand up untill is too late. I say leave it as it is. WHERE ARE OUR RIGHTS?
