KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)--You've heard of Tupperware and Taser parties, but now gold parties are all the rage.

WVLT Volunteer TV News tagged along Thursday evening as a group of women gathered to get rid of some outdated jewelry while earning cash and spending time together in the process.

"I had a large bag of gold," said Melissa Hutchison, which she was hoping to turn into cash. “The things I've pulled out of my jewelry box and around the house are really things that hold no value to me anymore and whatever they bring is great."
The gold party is organized by Jewelry Television, which offers a service allowing jewelry to be mailed away for an expert to appraise. An offer price is then emailed to the owner.
According to the company, the offers are accepted by 92 percent of owners.

"Gold prices are very high,” said Amy Lambert from Jewelry Television. “With the economy, everybody has old chains lying around, or old jewelry from an ex. It's just sitting in a drawer, so why not have some extra spending money?”

Some extra spending money is exactly what Mary King got at the last gold party she attended.

"I took just a couple of little chains and some stuff I didn't want,” said King. “I got $283 for it."

King hosted Thursday evening’s party with her sister. They’ll receive ten percent of each offer accepted by her party goers.

"If we do get some money, we own a rental house together and we're going to put a new roof on it,” she said.

Melissa had other ideas for any money she makes.

“I have three kids in college and that's probably where it's going to go," she said.
All the women agreed the gold party was a perfect “girl’s night out.”

Gold buying parties are generally fun, and you can certainly leave the party with more money than you had when you got there, but at $1100 an ounce, gold is FAR too valuable for you to sell it for less than you could be getting for it. At gold buying parties, too many people get commissions and/or profits: the host, the buyer, the company sponsoring the event, and the refiner the gold is sold to. You're usually FAR better off selling to a local jeweler, but you should ALWAYS get multiple offers before selling gold, so that you can determine who is actually giving you the "best deal"- otherwise, how are you to know? There may be other options for selling gold, depending on your circumstances and the quality of what it is you're selling, regardless of if you're in East TN, East TX, or somewhere on the East Coast. For more information, see http://www.JLBrandtCompany.com
