KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Google is looking for test cities to bring their newest technological innovation and Knoxville is among the many hoping to be selected.

The program is called Google Fiber for Communities and could be the next big step for the internet.

"What Google is talking about doing is putting in an entirely different level of broadband infrastructure, that would have the speed greatly increased,” said William Lyons from the City of Knoxville’s Policy & Communications Office.

Calling the speed greatly increased may be an understatement. The typical cable modem user surfs the Internet at a speed of around 6 megabits of information per second. Google’s fiber project would increase your speed to 1 gigabit of information per second or about 170 times faster.

Google says the pricing would be competitive and city officials believe it could open a lot of doors for Knoxville.

"It would allow businesses to do things more effectively,” said Lyons, “like entertainment and art or the numbers of people who download and upload material."

Unfortunately just applying for the program isn’t enough. To make itself stand out, the city has created launched a campaign called “Help Land the Google Gig.” The city is asking East Tennesseans to nominate the community for selection.

"There are people doing this all over the country in various cities,” said Lyons. “We'd love for them to do it here. They can respond how they wish to the questions about why it would be great for Knoxville."

Several local businesses are also assisting the city, including the Knoxville Utility Board which has already started answering questions about construction and telephone pole installation.

"Our current operation is to assist the city of Knoxville with the operational portion of the application that's relevant to KUB," said Grace Whiteside, a KUB spokesperson.

If you want to help, you can visit the city’s website by clicking on the link below. Right at the top of the page you will see the “Help Land the Google Gig” banner. From there you will find information about how to nominate Knoxville, as well as watch a video by Google developers about the fiber project.
