KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – An East Tennessee-based college is turning a part of a sprawling vacant office complex into its newest campus.

South College announced in early 2010 that it had reached an agreement to open a new campus inside the old Goody’s corporate headquarters on Parkside Drive.

On Tuesday, construction crews began ripping down walls to convert three floors and more than 85,000 square feet of the building into the school’s new “Parkside Centre Learning Site.”

We're now beginning the process of demolishing and tearing down the inside to get it ready for the creation of classrooms, laboratories and faculty offices,” said Norman Hammit, a spokesperson for South College.

The space is being used to replace school’s Hayfield campus on Parkside Drive. The space will be used to house the Physician’s Assistant masters program, nursing department, education department and South College’s brand new Pharmacy school.

They expect to have the work finished by October 1st, 2010.

I am certainly glad to see this private College take off as it has done since its inception. The University of Tennessee and the local community colleges offer a limited enrollment to their health care programs and this is a burgeoning field. The school for physician assistants here in Knoxville should be full if people knew what I knew about the need for these people.
