COCKE COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) – A federal court has sentenced the sex offender and main person of interest in the disappearance of an East Tennessee teen to prison.

Jeffery Lee Stock, 41 of Del Rio was sentenced to six years in prison on Thursday after pleading guilty to failing to notify authorities when he traveled from Tennessee to Indiana last year. He was also ordered to remain on federal supervised release for the rest of his life.

Stock was taken into custody on June 18th, 2009 after an investigation by the U.S. Marshals Service, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and several local police agencies in Tennessee and Indiana.

“With the Adam Walsh Act, we are able to marshal the resources of local, state, and federal law enforcement officers across state lines to ensure the safety of communities from sex offenders who prey upon the most vulnerable members of those communities,” said James R. Dedrick Jr., the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee in a news release. “This prosecution is an excellent example of the effective use of the Adam Walsh Act.”

Prior to his arrest, Stock was questioned about the April 2009 disappearance of Megan Maxwell, 19 of Newport. Maxwell was last heard from by friends early on the morning of April 26th when she called to say she was on her way home. Her car was found later that morning along Hwy 25/70 near Newport, fully engulfed in flames.

The Cocke County Sheriff’s Office said Stock had been seen driving Maxwell’s car before it was set on fire.

He was interrogated in the case but never charged.
