MORGAN COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) – A maximum security prison in East Tennessee remained on lock down late Friday night after several corrections officers were injured in two separate fights among inmates.
Tennessee Department of Correction Spokeswoman Dorinda Carter told Volunteer TV News that five officers at the Morgan County Correctional Complex in Wartburg were injured during the fights. The first happened around 2:00 p.m. in a recreation yard and was followed by a second in one of the prison’s housing units. In both fights, the officers were injured while trying to break up inmates.
All five correctional officers were treated for their injuries and according to TDOC officials; none of them were seriously hurt.
The inmates involved in the fights will face disciplinary hearings at some point in the future. Lock down was expected to be lifted sometime on Saturday.
The Morgan County Correctional Complex reopened last year after an extensive renovation project replacing the century old Brushy Mountain Correctional Complex in Petros. It can house more than 2,400 inmates and is the TDOC’s only maximum security prison in East Tennessee.

I know first hand how violent these inmates are. Two years ago one of them (along) with two friends kicked my door in at 3:30 am and held us at gun point. My children were pistol whipped and my daughter required her head to be sewn up. We were lined up on the floor with guns to our heads when the police got there and it ended in a gunfight with the police. I hope the guards kick their face in every chance they get.
First of all my hearts and Prayers are with the guards and their families. Second shame on you Timbo, you apparently have never had anyone you know make a mistake. Not all inmates at MCCX are ruthless criminals. Knowing the workings of that Compound there is no doubt in my mind that officials knew that there was a threat and chose to ignore it. Anytime you have a "new" facility there will be issues and trust me when I say if this was a planned riot then the inmates must have had issues that prison officials were not addressing. This is seriously a losing situation for everyone.
prison wife, i agree she lied big time, she wasnt even there she doesnt have any idea what happened, the only ones who really knows what happened is the guards and whatever they have told their families. ican assure that their stories all add up, i know there are a few guards who cant return to work and a few who can't even sleep because they seen that mans face replaying in their head, i know this because i have to deal with it as a wife of an injured guard who helped the man, i hope all is good with those guards hurt and nonhurt! something has to be done, and if the state isnt listening to the guards maybe the guards families can do something maybe i can figure out a way for them to start listening to us families!!! stay safe
