KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT/AP) -- Nearly one ton of marijuana has turned up at a factory in Central Virginia and authorities believe it may have come from East Tennessee.
The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office said employees at the American Safety Razor plant in Verona, Virginia were unloading boxes from a truck Tuesday evening when they noticed the bar codes on each box didn't match the equipment orders. They decided to open one of the boxes, only to discover it was filled with marijuana.
Deputies were called to the scene and found 80 boxes containing 23 pounds of marijuana on the same truck. The whole tractor trailer ended up having a total of 1,840 pounds of marijuana with a street value of more than $2 million on board.
The shipment is still under investigation, though Augusta County authorities said they did not believe anyone at the Central Virginia plant was the intended recipient.
"We are in the process of trying to determine when, where, and how that shipment may have been placed in that trailer,” Lt. Glenn Hanger told WVLT Volunteer TV News sister station WHSV-TV in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
According to authorities, the marijuana likely originated in Mexico and somehow traveled to the American Safety Razor plant at Forks of the River in East Knox County. While there they believe it was swapped with the equipment that was supposed to be shipped to the Central Virginia plant. It is unclear where the legitimate equipment ended up.
