KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) --
It was here at ASR's East Knox County location that authorities believe a truck filled with 80 separate boxes, each containing about 22 pounds of pot, made a 450-mile journey to central Virginia.
"We're in the process of trying to determine when, where and how that shipment may have been placed into that trailer," said Captain Glenn Hanger of the Augusta County Sheriff's Office.
Is there an East Tennessee connection? We don't know. But, the Augusta County Sheriff's Office says employees at the Virginia location knew something wasn't right with that shipment.
"They discovered what they thought were improper packages. They noticed that the parts number didn't match anything that they were supposed to have and they noticed bar codes didn't match," said Hanger.
When one of the boxes was opened, they found marijuana. Deputies were called, and nearly a ton of pot was seized.
Authorities believe the marijuana was originally put onto trucks in Mexico, where American Safety Razor has three facilities. It then traveled to Arizona The company has several locations there. From Arizona, the pot made its way to ASR in Knoxville before ending up at the company's location in Verona, Virginia, where it was seized by local authorities.
A spokesperson from the Drug Enforcement Administration told me quote "When employees in Knoxville noticed that a grouping of boxes were scattered, they re-packed them for shipping to their final destination, not knowing it was marijuana."
An ASR representative would only comment that, quote, "The facility received an "unauthorized shipment" and we immediately contacted law enforcement."
