KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) -- Fluoride is in Knoxville's water supply and most of the outlying utility districts.
The element prevents tooth decay.
But a new study says it can lead to lead poisoning.
So we dug a little deeper to find out the truth for you.
Dentist Reuben Pelot knows firsthand the benefits of fluoride.
60 years ago, before fluoride was in your water supply, Dr. Pelot worked at the local health department.
Reuben Pelot, DDS says, "We would have oodles of kids and almost 90 percent were there for extractions because teeth were rotted out.”
Nowadays, it's almost 180 degrees the other way.
Reuben Pelot, DDS says, "They're saving more teeth than they're extracting primarily through the advent of fluoride into our public water supply."
But a new study in lab animals found fluoride chemicals added to public water supplies, boosts lead absorption in lab animals' bones, teeth and blood.
Low-level lead exposure is associated with lower IQ, ADHD and many health and behavior ailments.
But Dr. Susan Orwick-Barnes, member of the Tennessee Dental Association, researched the study and found out this.
Susan Orwick-Barnes, DDS says, "The rats had 8 times the amount of fluoride than what we get in our water in the optimal amount. That premise made me feel the report was flawed from the beginning."
So if you're getting fluoride from sources in addition to your water, be aware of your intake.
And here's a warning for parents whose kids are drinking bottled water without fluoride.
Dr. Barnes says, "You need to make sure your child is drinking tap water with fluoride or at least cook with it."
So for Dr. Pelot and Dr. Barnes, they recommend fluoride so you and your children will have healthy teeth that fight acids and bacteria that cause dental decay.

Fluoride's beneficial effects happen at the tooth's surface not internally. Plus you already get more than you need from brushing your teeth or go to the dentist. So from these multiply sources your definitely getting unsafe amounts. It just goes to show how they think were to stupid to understand what their doing and I fear they may be right. They are literally putting rat poison in the water our tax dollars are supposed pay for and their are moms giving fluoridated bottled water to their kids and thinks their doing a great thing. The government needs to get out of the fluoridation market and allow people to decide if and how they get fluoride. But I guess it's hard to stop getting payed to dump industrial waste in our water instead of paying to dispose of it properly. But look on the bright side you'll probably be so brain damaged you'll never realize or maybe even like it.
Masters Coplan 1999 Dartmouth study on 250,000 kids showed Siliofluorides caused 41% more lead in blood then those not fluoridated. Maas 2007 ,Coplan 2007 documented the cause as FSA chemicals blend leaches lead and is corrosive. Chlorine made it worse but the new EPa ordered Chloramine is much more destructive and leaching. 9 times more in the test. Expensive chemicals like orthophosphate must then be added to reduce the destruction. The slightest drop in PH also fuels the harm. University of Michigan just released new data proving blacks intake of fluoride is significantly higher then whites. Blacks were proven damaged by dental fluorosis from the first experment 60 years ago and still by CDC in recent data. They refused to tell the public in 2007 even after formal ethics charges. Yoder K.M. 2007 in pubmed for Indiana and illinois showed Dental professionals did not know the old ingested benefit theory is invalid. The new one is post eruptive topical. Its a secret to dentists.
Washington DC from 2000-2004 had a major lead disaster which they hid from the public for almost 3 years. The EPA suggested chloramine instead of chloramine but forgot to mention it could pipes and leach leak in a very destructive way. Dc had the perfect storm of very old pipes many lead and very high chlorine levels had left lots of lead blisters. The chloramine busted them loose and filled aeriators with lead bits that shed lead hundreds and thousands of times over the 15ppb max. Instead of telling the public they did nothing but did hire a expert to find the cause. Marc Edwards Virginia Tech had 3 grad students test for 3 months proving off the charts lead everywhere in the city not just where lead pipes were. He never got paid for the work as he would not assist in the cover up. They did fire Semha Bhat who did leak the truth. It was front page in the Washington post for 30 days straight with free bottled water and filters to part of the city. 25,000 ,never told the other 100,000
