KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)--It was a special day for hundreds of East Tennessee families.
The 1/230th Air Cavalry Squadron returned home by buses.
We were there as families got to hug their soldier for the first time in over a year.
There were screams of joy as the buses loaded with soldiers arrived.
Carrying hand made signs, eager family members charged forward to give hugs and more hugs.
Returning from his first tour overseas, Specialist Stephen Mathes is glad to be home.
Specialist Stephen Mathes says, "It was an experience. I wouldn't want to go back, but I will if I have to."
He was all smiles as he saw his family for the first time.
Specialist Stephen Mathes says, "It was nice. I haven't seen them in a while."
Specialist Stephen Mathes returned with 600 other soldiers who worked in Northern Iraq performing aviation maintenance on OH-58 Kiowa Warrior helicopters.
His family couldn't wait for him to return.
Dad Steve Mathes says, "He bought a house while he was gone, so now he can come home and take care of it."
Chief Warrant Officer Brad Hutsell is trying to get reacquainted with his family.
CW4 Brad Hutsell says, "I think the kids are a little nervous to get back in the groove. I'm anxious to get back into the groove."
Wife Lisa Hutsell says, "I've become quite independent. I've learned to do a lot on my own, but I won't have a problem giving him chores again."
But one thing's for sure, both families have pride for their heroes.
Dad Steve Mathes says, "I can't tell you how proud and pleased I am as a father that he's gone to Iraq and spent this time there great experience for him."
A great experience, and one they'll never forget.

Great news piece...very special and touching UNTIL the end when she says "Well 2 soldiers weren't able to hug their families because they were killed!" DUH how thoughtless and heartless! Who wrote that? Use some sensitivity to the families who have lost soldiers and those who STILL have soldiers over there! Something more tactful like...the 1/230th was minus 2 heroes at this homecoming or we are remembering 2 heroes who came home early due to losing their lives for this country! Come on!
