KCSO releases preliminary autopsy results in blogger's son's death

Henry Granju Preliminary Autopsy

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A well-known local blogger's son died due to lack of oxygen to his brain, a condition that was likely caused by drug use, Preliminary autopsy results indicate. The preliminary cause of death is listed at anoxic ecnephalopathy.

Henry Granju, 18, died May 31, following a lengthy hospitalization that began April 27. While hospitalized, Granju was treated for a drug overdose and, according to medial records provided by his family, traumatic injuries that he received from a beating on April 25 during a botched drug deal.

You can read the preliminary autopsy report HERE. The Knox County Sheriff's Office released the preliminary report by Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Darinka Mileusnic-Polchan Friday.

Henry Granju's mother is Katie Allison Granju, a former member of the Knoxville news media and an area blogger. She has expressed doubts about whether her son died of complications from a drug overdose.

On her blog, MamaPundit.com, Katie Granju writes:

Yes, my teenage son had a serious drug problem. He was involved in high-risk activities with clearly dangerous people. In no way do we minimize or make excuses for that fact. However, that didn’t give others the right to kill an 18 year old boy who was a much loved son and big brother to three younger siblings, who are devastated.

Later, in a statement posted on their Web site, the Knox County Sheriff's Office said:

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation into the alleged assault of Henry Granju. The preliminary investigation shows no evidence that his death was the result of a homicide or from the injuries he may have received from an assault. An autopsy was conducted on Tuesday and the results are pending.

We understand and sympathize that the family wants answers immediately. However, our detectives will not compromise the investigation and will continue to investigate the incident with professionalism and integrity.
