KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)--The "old school" bar code will soon be a thing of the past for one retail giant.
Walmart plans to use modern technology to become more efficient and place radio frequency ID tags on men's underwear and socks, among other items.
We talked to local shoppers to see what they think about the smart tags on skivvies!
Linda Ferrell unloads her buggy full of groceries from Walmart. She just found out about their new smart tags.
Linda Ferrell says, "I think that's a great idea."
The electronic product code will use RFID technology to give real time information about merchandise.
For example, customers can ask about a specific brand and Walmart scans an entire shelf to find out what's in stock.
Linda Ferrell says, "Just to keep track of things, maybe it'll cut down on shoplifting."
It will be on men's items first like jeans, socks, t-shirts and even underwear.
Carrie Hatcher says, "I think it's a big step and I think it's going to be really helpful honestly."
But there is a concern the smart tags, which are already used in Walmart warehouses, will follow customers outside the store.
Linda Ferrell says, "I don't think I'd like that at all."
Walmart reassures the tags can only be picked up by a scanner within a few feet. And the RFID is placed on price tags or logo tags, so a customer can remove it after purchase.
Linda Ferrell says, "That's probably what I'd do immediately."
As long as shoppers like Linda can remove the smart tags, they are looking forward to the new technology that will save them shopping time.
