Animal shelter takes in dozens from abuse case in Knox County

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Dozens of animals were found in a house on Murphy Road in Northeast Knox County, and now Young-Williams Animal Center needs your help more then ever.

Young-Williams can hold up to 500 animals, but the abuse case discovered earlier in the week, sent dozens of animals in all at once.

Dr. Michael Blackwell, an Administrator at Young-Williams, said, "That puts pressure on space, and something has to give, so it would be a good time to come in and consider adoption."

Dr. Blackwell said animals that come from a hoarding situation are not always healthy, for example all 45 cats from the Murphy Road house are still getting medical care.

"So, we have a special account called SAVES, that acronym is in effect to save the lives of those who wouldn't otherwise get medical care," he said.

That is just one fund that will help pay for the extra care, but even something as simple as offering to walk a dog, or play with a cat can go a long way. "Without the volunteers we couldn't get it all done, especially again, when big numbers come in," he said.

While the animals saved from the Murphy Road house are getting a lot of attention, there are still hundreds of others waiting, that might be perfect for your family.

Dr. Blackwell said, "When hoarding cases occur and big numbers come in and community responds, which we really appreciate because it saves lives, we will take the steps here that we must to make sure nobody gets left out."

Adoption fees range from $50 to $150, based on age and the medical care they needed when they came in.

The best way to save a life, take one home with you.
