Officials: Portion of SW Ky. bridge collapses

BENTON, Ky. (AP) -- State officials say a portion of a bridge in southwest Kentucky has collapsed after being struck by a tow boat. State officials say no injuries have been reported.

Spokesman Keith Todd of the state Transportation Cabinet says at 8:10 p.m. Thursday the Motor Vessel Delta Mariner struck the main span of the Eggner Ferry Bridge at U.S. Highway 68 and Kentucky Highway 80.

Fifty-one-year-old Robert Parker of Cadiz, Ky., says he was driving over the bridge when he noticed a 20-foot section of the bridge missing. He says no cars went into the water.

Officials say the bridge is located at the western entrance to the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. About 2,800 vehicles travel on the Kentucky Lake bridge daily.
