Union County School Board votes to fire superintendent but keeps him on payroll

UNION COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) -- In a 4-3 vote, the Union County School Board voted to fire Superintendent Wayne Goforth but keep him on administrative leave with pay Tuesday night.

Members voted that the six charges-- they brought against Goforth for neglect and incompetency to carry out his duties of office-- were enough to terminate his contract.

Some of the accusations include: incorrectly soliciting bids for items purchased, accumulating debts and approving and writing checks when the money wasn't there.

Goforth's Attorney Herb Moncier called the board out for spending thousands of dollars on the issue.

"It convinces me that the four members of the school board don't care what they do to carry out their political vandetta for whatever reason they're doing it," Moncier said. " They don't care how much it costs tax payers. They don't care how much it costs the county and school system."

Moncier said he will be appealing the Board's decision and will begin the paperwork as early as tomorrow.

Goforth has been superintendent since 2008.
