On January 18, 2009 over 300 power tumblers from states as far away as Utah took to the floor at the Knoxville Convention Center to compete in the annual Flip Fest Invitational. Among them were elite athletes on the United States National Team seeking points to earn an appearance at the world championships. But, perhaps more importantly were the young boys and girls dreaming of just such an opportunity. Various age groups tumbled and jumped their way into the hearts of the many spectators who populated the stands. Their dedication to the sport and enjoyment showed not only on their faces but also on those of the parents and coaches who meted out encouragement and discipline as needed.
The Premier Power Tumbling and Trampoline Team of Knoxville, TN, coached by National Champion Eric Thomas and 2-Time World Champion Audrey Deyton, is to be commended. The athletes performed well, winning several gold, silver, and bronze medals. Beyond this, they maintained a level of sportsmanship and professionalism that speak well of the rigid practice schedule they observe. Amid the laughter was an intense love and respect for the sport.
Each week, the athletes choose to spend their afternoons and evenings at the gym on Western Avenue. On any given day you’ll find parents and their Jr. Olympian hopefuls amid the smells of sweat and chalk, looking forward to the next meet.
