KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Three area airports are among the 13 statewide that were awarded grants on Tuesday by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

Gatlinburg Pigeon Forge Airport, Crossville Memorial Airport and McGhee Tyson Airport will share more than $4 million in funding for various projects.

Gatlinburg Pigeon Forge will receive $112,000 to make modifications to its lighting system. The airport sees nearly 200 take-offs and landings each day.

Legislators from Sevier County’s delegation to Nashville helped win the funds.

Crossville Memorial Airport in Cumberland County scored $1.6 million from the state to repave its 5418 foot long and 1651 foot long runways. State Sen. Charlotte Burks and Rep. Eric Swafford helped secure the grant for the 75 year old airport.

McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville was awarded $2.7 million to spend on a number of projects. The money will go toward the second phase of its terminal entry improvement plan, air cargo ramp improvements, a deicing spreader, storage tank replacement, terminal and operations fleet replacement, and a planning study for the proposed Oak Ridge General Aviation Airport.

"Our local airports are vital to the economy and travel system of Tennessee," said Gov. Phil Bredesen in a news release. "Investing in our airports helps keep them competitive and efficient at meeting the needs of businesses and travelers."

The other airports receiving funds are Everett-Stewart Airport in Union City, Fayetteville Airport, John C. Tune Airport in Nashville, Lafayette Airport, Livingston Airport, Murfreesboro Airport, Nashville International Airport, Tri-Cities Airport in Blountville, University of the South Franklin County Airport and William L. Whitehurst Field in Bolivar.
