PHOENIX (AP) -- Dozens of members of the Havasupai tribe are returning to their remote village near the Grand Canyon for the first time since a devastating flash flood during the weekend.

Bureau of Indian Affairs spokeswoman Adrienne King says at least 50 residents of the village of Supai had signed up for transportation back home Wednesday.

Buses are carrying them from the northern Arizona community of Peach Springs to the rim of the canyon. From there they are being taken home by helicopter because the flooding damaged the eight-mile trail from the canyon rim to the village.

The residents of Supai and a number of tourists in the area were evacuated after the flash flood hit the area late Saturday and into Sunday.
