CROSSVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The World's Largest Yard Sale is underway across the nation, and it passes right through East Tennessee.
Diane and Rosanna Rogers are shopping the 127 corridor for sales. "Looks like they got a lot of tents here, so we are going to take advantage of them," said Diane Rogers of Michigan, "One man's trash is another person's valuables as they say."
The sister-in-law duo has been traveling south for the World's Largest Yard sale for 10 years, and they've got the tee-shirts to prove it. Friday they braved the mud to find the buys.
"Like I say, if it fits my fancy, I'll pick it up," said Rosanna Rogers, also of Michigan.
"You know what, I liked it before, but being $4 I like it even better now. I guess it's just the fun of the hunt kind of thing," said Diane.
Along the 675 miles from Michigan to Alabama, shoppers say you can find just about anything.
When Volunteer TV News asked what some were purchasing, "Kitchen knives, tongue rings, and a movie," said Justin Ragsdale of Fayetteville, Tenn.
"Some little dolls, I bought a silhouette picture, a couple other things I don't want to say out loud," said Deannie Penney, while gesturing to her granddaughter nearby.
You can also get some socks, sunglasses with a built-in bottle opener, or an assortment of decor. "The chair is made of longhorns. We get them down in Mexico. It's got a cowhide on it. They seem to sell well. It's a unique item," said Preston Mulvene. He runs Mulvene's Antiques and Imports out of Fort Myers, Fla.
Soggy weather didn't stop the shops in tents along the Highway. "There's a lot more to it than just shopping the sales, which are neat, you know, but there's a lot more to it. It's the ambiance of it, and everything too," said Rosanna.
The Rogers ladies say bring cash, and wear the right shoes, comfy and rain resistant. But mostly be ready for fun.
"I think we do more reminiscing than we do anything else. We'll say, 'My mom had this set of bowls, or my grandma has this, my grandmother had this too,'" said Diane, "We start talking and then we're telling stories."
"Sometimes we may not bring very much back, but just getting together with family and friends is what it is all about."
The sale runs through Sunday along Highway 127. Volunteer TV stopped just south of I-40 at Exit 317.
