CLINTON, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Being unemployed is bad enough, but now some are trying to cash in on your misfortune.

Something as simple as uploading your resume online could put a target on your back.

Volunteer TV spoke with a woman who says that happened to her.

Sherri Wallace says it was a job offer, that she thought she couldn't turn down.

She applied for the position Wednesday night.

She had an email Thursday morning with an offer.

By Saturday, the company sent her checks they wanted her cash and send via Western Union.

Those checks almost ruined Wallace's credit.

"Just looking for another job. Get back into accounting. Do something with the degree I fought so hard to get," Wallace explained.

After losing her job in the slumping economy, she set up a Hot Jobs account on Yahoo.

Last week, she thought it had worked.

A company called Slam Interiors offered her a Virtual Assistant job.

"They found me. They said they saw my resume online and wanted to know if I was interested in a position."

"They had a website. So, you know I checked out their website," Wallace continued.

Online, Slam Interiors looks legitimate.

There's no contact number, but there is an email.

And, there's a careers page listing Virtual Assistant.

"We've actually sent notices to the banks on some of these counterfeit checks to let them know they're going around," Jeanine Hoskins, the Vice President of Operations at the Knoxville branch of the Better Business Bureau said.

At the BBB office, Hoskins has a similar complaint on her desk right now.
But this time they used the name Ashley Furniture.

"They use prominent names so people feel more comfortable with them and think, 'Well, this has got to be real because I know this company,' " Hoskins told Volunteer TV.

Websites, big names-- doesn't mean it's real.

"It was an easy job. Work from home," Wallace said.

Slam Interiors overnight-ed Wallace two checks for $950.21.

They told her to use her own bank account, cash the checks keep 10% for commission, then use Western Union to send the rest of the money to their supplier in China.

"Western Union is one of their favorite things," Hoskins said. "That's just like sending cash through the mail. Once it's gone, it's almost impossible to get back."

Wallace took the checks to the bank.
When they couldn't find a watermark, she ripped them up.

"It scares me because how do you know the next job offer you get is legitimate?" Wallace questioned.

The Better Business Bureau already alerted Ashley Furniture that someone was using their company name as a front.

WVLT emailed Slam Interiors and have not heard back.

Before you accept a job like this, here are a few red flags:

-Emails with misspellings
-Companies out of the country
-Being asked to use your own bank account
-Being hired even though you don't have the right experience
-Several different names and addresses for contacts
-Not being asked for tax information

If it is a company name you recognize, you can always look up the number in the phone book and ask if they are hiring.

You can also call your BBB office and ask if they've had any complaints with that company.

I know from experience, there are people out there with nothing to do but hack on the computer and look for people's resumes......I didn't appreciate it. I was very serious about posting my resume to get a 'serious job".....I got a lot of bogus replies....These "HACKERS" need to get a REAL job. I didn't appreciate them grabbing my resume....Again,,,,HACKERS GET A REAL JOB.
