KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- If you spent your summer traveling, you know it's not uncommon to get bumped or miss a connection. Reports show the number of travelers and air fares were exceptionally high this July.
After having one flight canceled and sitting through several delays, two sisters finally get to see each other.
"Traveling today was terrible because we were 55 minutes late taking off from Atlanta coming here, and we had to run from terminal T to terminal C," said Janet Jones who drove from Boston to Atlanta with a friend after her flight was canceled last night.
"We drove to Boston to save time and get on an earlier flight," Jones said.
But she's not alone.
Danny Kessler said he had quite an adventure before even getting to his destinations, Egypt and Israel.
"We were suppose to be at a certain place at a certain time and, unfortunately, one of the flights was canceled which changed our entire itinerary," said Kessler who was forced to stay at the airport for approximately 7 hours.
According to an article in USA Today and the Air Transport Association, commercial airplanes in the US have never been so full. Delta airlines, along with six others, reported they filled almost 90 percent of their seats in July. The most since 2005, which explains some of the high fares.
The high fares and delays can make traveling a hassle, but there are some good deals out there to get up in the air.
Karen Casey, branch manager at Triple A, said now is a great time to travel.
"From September 7 to October 6, you can fly every day if you want to on Jet Blue for $699," Casey said.
That's $699 total for as many trips as you take in that time period. It's part of Jet Blue's "All You Can Jet" promotion. There are some drawbacks to the deal like the fact that Jet Blue doesn't fly out of Knoxville.
"You'd have to go to Charlotte and fly to NY or Boston. They have connection flights to the Caribbean, Las Vegas, San Francisco and many other different locations," she said.
You can also turn to the web for some good deals.
Becky Huckaby, spokeswoman for Knoxville McGhee Tyson Airport, said a lot of the airlines are having fare sales. She said you can go to each of the airline's website and sign up to get email alerts letting you know where they have fares out of Knoxville.
"Flyknoxville.com is a good place to start," she said.
There's also a little help for you last minute travelers.
"Some websites like Priceline, CheapTickets and HotWire.com all offer last minute discounts on travel because they're selling left over seats on some of those air crafts," Huckaby said. "There really are good opportunities, but you really have to look for them."
