Knoxville (WVLT) - Times are tough for many East Tennesseans, struggling to make ends meet with a tanking economy.

With the rise in gas prices and food costs, folks who were struggling before are barely making it now.

Volunteer TV spoke with one family who's looking to sell all their furniture to pay their bills.

Don and Patricia O'Donnell have been married for 13 years. The Jefferson City couple had tough financial times before, but recently it's taken a turn for the worse.

"It just all caught up with us 3 months ago and it's just getting progressively worse," Don said.

Three months ago they got stuck with a 600 dollar tax fine, plus their dog got sick and they got behind on their bills. About five years ago they filed for bankruptcy, and all of Don's paycheck goes to his debts, but he's on social security disability and his wife works in Gatlinburg. However, with tough economic times, Pat says they're struggling.

"It's easy to get into and hard to get out of. I hope nobody ever gets in this situation it's very stressful," Pat said.

Adding to the stress, they together drive 120 miles round-trip a week to and from work. With the price of gas going up, it's making it hard for them to drive to their job.

"We understand gas prices are up but I feel our pay should go up also," Pat said.

Since their wages haven't gone up, they're turning to the internet for help. They've listed household furniture and electronics in the classifieds.

"We're looking to sell everything to just get out of this mess and get caught up so we can at least have some kinda life," Don said.

Some kind of a life without the financial burden they're carrying right now.

Financial planners remind everyone during these tough economic times to budget carefully and spend wisely. They say it's imperative to stay financially stable.

For those criticizing this couple PLEASE READ. Walk a day in their shoes before you judge. 10 years ago my husband fell 30 ft off a utility pole while at work at his FIRST job. Snide remarks were made, I think he was expected to get up brush off and go on. You know I know he wished he could as well as me and our 2 kids. No he fractured 90% of his pelvis shattered his right hip (he has titainium now)blew out his shoulder and damaged vertabre he also has alot of nerve damage. Yes he walks with a cane but falls alot been totally disabled since his early 30's by all right he should be dead! 24 years togeather this year THANK GOD he didn't die! Still people look at him when he's out DOCTORS treat him poorly, people still make snide comments! THEY HAVE NO CLUE! And neither do any of you apparently! We to have sold all our belongings some from 23 years and before. We are selling our home to move we have lost everything and got no help from anyone! Lord I tried! Don't judge, it could be you!

The comment about the reason they drive so far. I don't know if you know much about Jefferson City, TN, but htere are no jobs here, especially any that pay any type of decent wages. I drive to Greenville which is 47 miles one way to a job. Alot of stuff depends on a persons education also and the way they were raised. You do not know their struggle. AS far as disability you can be partially disabled and work so many hours and make a certain percentage. Everyone needs to do their research before making commments they know nothing about. Their story is real it is not a scam. It is hard to get cought up when you are behind and bad things do happen to good people. What if you werer to get in a car wreck and loose your job and you make good money what then? You use all of your resources then what would you do?I know a couple who lost their 4 yr old son in a wreck and no insurance to cover medical bills of over 100,000 dollars. You can help them just contact wvlt for the information.

I would also like to comment about the miles they drive. He drives to Gatlinburg 4 days a week and she drives to morristown 5 days a week. They drive 120 miles per work day, not week.

To Don, I don't know exactly what you think you saw in the picture, but they do not have leather furniture, they have average clothes that come from wal-mart, and they rent the trailer from a family member and things are so bad they haven;t even been able to pay the rent tothe family member. So until you know the true facts about their story I would not pass judgement.

I have been reading all of theses comments. Some of them are harsh. We all understand that times are hard. I have known Pat for over 30 yrs. Her and Don have always worked. They fell on hard times when he got sick and had to stop driving a truck which was around 5 yrs ago. They are good decent people and I feel that they just wanted to tell their story to let others know they are not alone in the stuggle to make ends meet They are not trying to scam anybody nor did they ask for anything. Pat loves that dog more than anything. Her kids are grown and the dog has been good company for her especially when Don was on the road. It's hard to just give up a pet because you have fallen on hard times. And as far as Don working if you listen to the story he is paying what he can out of his disability check but the article says paycheck. Please don't feel sorry for theses folks just please pray for them if you can find it in your heart. Who knows tomorrow you and I may wake with the same situation.

Ellen, Good point about the media wanting us to believe the economy is bad. Meanwhile this is what is really happening: Wal-Mart sales of groceries and items such as flat-screen TVs boost same-store sales (AP) -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. says sales of groceries and items such as flat-screen TVs boosted its same-store sales in April above Wall Street expectations. The world's largest retailer said same-store sales rose 3.2 percent, easily beating Wall Street's 2.1 percent growth forecast. The media is just trying to brainwash people into thinking things are bad so they will vote for Democrats. Good there are still some of us that don't fall for it. And this couple still has a nice home, overstuffed leather furniture, nice clothes, etc. Makes you wonder how CBS found them?

Prices are definitely going up. We are all having to sacrifice some things. But people have to realize they can't always wait for the government to help them. Credit cards have to be used wisely and you don't buy a house you can't afford like a lot of people have done. This couple is having a hard time not from the above things but still recovering from bankrupcy. Media has all of us believing we are in a recession. Don is just saying to stop complaining and start by doing something about it which the couple seem to be doing. Not everyone is as bad off but we all need to be careful with our spending right now. This is a nation of consumers. We have to pay the piper sometime.

You whiners have made my point - you are sheep. Sit back a realize that as you complain you are doing so with a computer you purchased and internet connection you pay for so you are doing quite well too! There are so many hoaxes these days I ask CBS a few simple questions: what is the rest of the story on these folks i.e. how much property do they have, why bankruptcy 5 years ago, what is there net worth, etc. You are falling for the typical media ploy which means you are in the same pity party as they are - Democrat!

DON SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HIMSELF. KARMA IS A WELL, YOU KNOW WHAT!

Posted by: LuLu Location: Maryville on May 7, 2008 at 02:34 PM
If you read the article they drive 120 miles a WEEK, not a day. Take 120 and divide that by 5 days and that is 24 miles a day. People need to make sure they read the entire article before they start passing judgement on people. I for one know that times are tight right now. Selling extras right now is what quite a few people are doing to help cover rising costs.

Maybe there are no jobs close to their home that they can actually do. I use to work with a guy that drove from Kentucky to Clinton TN EVERYDAY because he couldnt find anything closer that would allow him to make more even after paying for the gas. Just goes to show you never know why people do what they do, but I would bet they dont drive that far simply for the fun of it....

Everyone who is finding higher prices tough to deal with should contact Don Location Knoxville. It seems he is doing well in these financial hard times with the rocky stock market and high energy costs that does'nt seem to want to go away anytime soon. Proper planning will help get through the tough times but one must have the resources to plan with first and many people don't.

Hey Don guess what, not everyone is riding high these days. Glad you have the money to come in here and question those that live paycheck to paycheck like most people in Tn. do and have for years. Perhaps someone as smart as you would like to do the math on inflation and stale wages. I cant stand people like you, The price of EVERYTHING is going thru the roof and you have the audacity to blame those losing everything they own because of what? They didn't plan on the economy going into the crapper?

Posted by: Lora Location: Bean Station on May 6, 2008 at 04:08 PM
Hey, we all are having hard times, I completely understand; the government is gonna have to step in & help. And by the way, Don in Knoxville, where the he** are you livin that things are soooo great? Get a life and tell the truth; things may be great for you; you prob live in your parent's basement, don't you? Things for the real working public aint so grand all the time. We are having to decide whether to put gas in the car or buy food. Grow up!

Times are not great for everyone. Several large companies in our area have shut down. My husband is laid off from his job because of the economy. Not everyone can sit on their high-horse and rub it in peoples faces like you. Glad you got it good but a lot of people are not so fortunate.

MY HUSBAND AND I ALSO KNOW ABOUT TOUGH TIMES WE HAVE GOOD JOBS BUT WITH GAS PRICES AS HIGH AS THEY ARE GETTING THINGS ARE GETTING KIND OF ROUGH ON OUR FINANCES.WE HAVE 3 CHILDREN 2 OF THEM ARE IN SCHOOL AND ONE IN DAY CARE MONEY IS PRETTY TIGHT WE DON'T HAVE MONEY FOR THE LUXURIES OR FOR VACATIONS.MY HUSBAND AND I HAD TO RECENTLY SELL OUR SKI BOAT WHICH WAS PAID FOR TO TRY TO CATCH UP ON SOME OF OUR BILLS. WE PAY OUT ABOUT $620 A MONTH FOR HEALTH AND DENTAL INSURANCE FOR OUR FAMILY.I HAVE BEEN SICK RECENTLY AND HAVE MISSED ALOT OF WORK AND MY HUSBAND WAS SICK AND MISSED A COUPLE OF WEEKS OF WORK SO THAT PUT US WAY BEHIND ON OUR BILLS.I CAN REALLY SYMPATHIZE WITH THESE PEOPLE AND ALL THE OTHER PEOPLE WHO ARE IN THE SAME SITUATION.TO THE PEOPLE WHO SAY THEY ARE DOING GREAT AND PAYING THEIR BILLS ON TIME MUST BE THE ONES WITH A MILLION IN THE BANK WHO VOTED BUSH INTO OFFICE.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 6, 2008 at 02:47 PM
Why do they drive so far to work? I drive 16 miles to work and my car gets 31mpg. I do feel bad that they are in a tough spot but couldn't they do more for themselves? I believe we should help our neighbors but shouldn't they have learned from their mistake 5yrs ago?

Posted by: vicki Location: jefferson city on May 6, 2008 at 12:58 PM
My question is -How is this man working a job (his paycheck is going to pay bills) and getting social security DISABILITY? If you are disabled you dn't work. Isn't that double-dipping? Also, I think I would worry about feeding myself and paying bills instead of a dog.

Posted by: JR Location: Knoxville on May 6, 2008 at 12:43 PM
Why would someone drive 120 miles a day if money is tight? Get a job in Jefferson City, or Morristown, or Knoxville for heavens sake. Not to seem harsh, but most folks get into the positions they are in due to poor judgment and poor decisions. Get jobs close to home, ideally within walking distance if possible. Time to start making some good choices. God be with you.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 6, 2008 at 12:37 PM
Well, Don who knows maybe one day you will end up like them and then you can look back and say I wish I would have never acted like that. It is great that you have all that stuff but not everyone is fortunate like you. All I can say is if these people are really this bad off may god have mercy on you.

Posted by: Don Location: Knoxville on May 6, 2008 at 10:01 AM
Hundreds of thousands in East TN are doing great, have great jobs. How is it you find & highlight these folks?

Posted by: Don Location: Knoxville on May 6, 2008 at 09:59 AM
We're doing great! Why don't you ever interview us? We have good jobs, pay our bills, have video games, 2 cars, big screen TV, vacation at the beech, movies, dine out, etc. Life is good!

Posted by: Don Location: Knoxville on May 6, 2008 at 05:45 AM
What is their net value? How much property do they own? How much is their income. Why did they file for bancruptcy 5 yrs. ago when gas, food prices were lower? How much govt assistance are they getting? etc. Questions conveniently not addressed by CBS.

Posted by: Don Location: Knoxville on May 6, 2008 at 05:36 AM
Having heard the story it seems this was less about tought economic times than poor economic decisions by these folks. The economy is actually booming with record high employment. WVLT is just trying to advance the liberal media template.

Has anyone set up a help fund for these people? I want to donate. I don't have much but I would like to help out. Please let me know how to reach them if not.
