FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) -- The mother of a Fort Campbell soldier from eastern Kentucky said her son, who was killed in Afghanistan, wanted to be a soldier since he was little.
The Defense Department confirmed 23-year-old Spc. Jeremy Gullett of Greenup, Ky., was one of two 101st Airborne Division soldiers killed Wednesday when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb. The other fatality was Staff Sgt. Kevin Roberts of Farmington, N.M.
Both were assigned to the 101st Airborne Division's Fourth Brigade Combat Team at Fort Campbell, a sprawling Army post on the Kentucky-Tennessee line.
Gullett's mother, Cheryl Gullett, said her son leaves a wife and the couple's 21-month-old daughter.
Gullett was also adopting his wife's 6-year-old daughter.
An uncle, Ron Gullett, told the newspaper that the family had been told the soldier's remains would arrive in a week to 10 days.
