LA VERGNE, Tenn. (AP) -- Police in La Vergne have charged an 11-year-old boy with aggravated assault in the shooting of a 12-year-old girl.

Authorities said the victim was critically wounded in the head Wednesday and taken to Vanderbilt University Children's Hospital in Nashville, which released no condition report on her Wednesday night.

Police Chief Ted Boyd said his department is talking with the prosecutor's office about possible charges against the boy's parents, who were not home when the incident occurred.

Boyd said the boy called police a few minutes after the shooting, apparently after talking with his father by telephone.

The chief said the boy knew the gun was real and told police he had played with it several times, taking it from between his parents' mattress and box springs in their bedroom.

Its bad on both accounts. One: the boy should have known better than to play with the gun, and two: the PARENTS shouldnt have left the gun loaded and within reach of the boy. Its sad how ignorant people gan be about things like gun saftey.
