MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) -- Police have charged a Murfreesboro man with attempted murder for burning down his in-laws' home while five people, including two children, were inside.
Although all the people escaped the fire Thursday night unharmed, La Vergne Police Chief Ted Boyd said 34-year-old Samuel Jenkins also shot at them as they ran out the back door.
Jenkins is being held in the Rutherford County Jail on five charges of attempted first-degree murder.
Boyd said in a press release that Jenkins' estranged wife had an active order of protection against him when he tried to set fire to her parents' home. Inside the house were the in-laws, the estranged wife, a 5-year-old child and 3-day-old baby.
Boyd said Jenkins used an accelerant on the home, which was a total loss. He was picked up by police shortly after the fire.
In the process of trying to stop the fire, a firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion. Jenkins will also be charged with arson.
