UNION COUNTY (WVLT) – The Union County Humane Society in Maynardville has been helping pets find new homes for a dozen years. On Saturday it finally opened its own permanent home.

The new facility covers six thousand square feet. Dogs are housed in a special area inside the main building while kittens have their own cottage in the backyard.

Their new facility is a vast improvement over their two previous homes which were in a barn and a trailer, however even with all they now have, officials say it’s just the beginning.

“This is a growth thing,” said Tammy Rouse with the humane society. ”This isn't the end of our efforts, it's the beginning. It allows us to have a place that the public looks forward to coming to."

I am proud of our humane society. I, like many others, am trying to pinch pennies and am thankful for the discount clinic that they held in my area Saturday. I was able to get my kittens the shots they needed without taking out a loan. Thank you Humane Society for the wonderful services that you are providing.
