LENOIR CITY, Tenn (WVLT) -- Several parents are angry after what happened at Lenior City Schools today during a bomb threat.

Some students sat outside without food and little water for 2 and a half hours.

School officials say they had no choice because the school was on lockdown.

A police cruiser sits outside Lenoir City High School after a bomb threat was made to the school around 1:00 p.m. Monday.

1260 students evacuated the building without their personal belongings and waited in the stadium until 3:30 p.m. when they were released.
Student Miranda Haney: "I was dehydrated i really needed water and i was tired."

Haney didn't get a chance to eat lunch before she left the school.

Neither did Thomas Borg, who says they didn't get much water to drink either. "It was really hot, no water. Water didn't come until maybe 3:00 pm."

Thomas's mother says she was concerned about her son's health.

"My son's asthmatic he's not the only one with health issues," Julie Borg told Volunteer TV News.

And on top of his health conditions, Julie says her son was told not to call her.

"Please don't tell my child he's not able to call his mom when there's a bomb threat at school and he's out there in the 93 degree heat," Borg said.

Superintendent Wayne Miller wouldn't go on camera, but told Volunteer TV there was a water fountain at the fieldhouse for the students.

He says the students couldn't get food because they weren't allowed inside the school.

And he says they weren't letting any kids leave because the police had the students secured and the school was on lockdown.

It's Volunteer TV's policy to evaluate bomb threats on a case by case basis.

In this case, we are broadcasting the information because of the complaints of a parent over the health of her children while they were outside the building for several hours while police investigated.

Miller says a bomb sniffing dog had to come from a neighboring county which is why the students were out of school for so long.

We will pass along any arrests in the case if they are made.

This situation is very troubling for all involved. First of all, to all the people who are calling these kids and their moms “whinny”, please! These kids were outside for hours without water, and the air quality in LC is very bad. Not to mention how hot it was. All schools should have an emergency plan, and clearly LC High School did not. So this brings me to the Faculty. Where were they? At the very least couldn’t they have gone down to the Wal-mart and got as many cases of water that they could find. Or how about the Superintendent who was sitting in his air-conditioned truck, couldn’t he have been a little more pro-active about the situation. And why these kids weren’t allowed to call their parents, while the students who drove to school got to leave, also troubles me. The inconsistency by the Faculty and Administrators should be looked into. Either way this probably won’t be the last time this happens. So hopefully they can learn from this and handle it better next time.

Thank you for all those who have posted supportive comments. For all those that have not, think about this: Your child has been in the hospital until 1:30 am that morning, but insists he goes to school because he does not want to miss important lessons. He gets there and then soon after is taken outside in hot weather on a "orange air alert"day to sit outside for over 3 hours with one drinking fountain for over 1200 kids. This child has asthma, but his inhaler is in his belongings which are locked up in the school. This child is NOT allowed to call his parents. This situation was handled improperly! The parents should have been notified and allowed to come get them. The kids that drove were released earlier, not kept by the "lockdown". What is wrong with you people who don't understand the severity of this situation? Our children were put at risk. There needs to be an action plan put in place for future possible situations such as this! This is true LC "Hush Hush" at work!

I'm sorry, but I hope these people read this and realize their lives could have been in danger. Luckily they had trained profession to help get the situation under control. You people complaining are STUPID.

What is wrong with you people? "Whinny" mommies? Kids die from heat stroke! The school system does NOT put kids first, parents do. They cancel 30 min. recesses in excessive heat due to the dangers to children. And you think that 2 hours in the hot sun is not a big deal? Do you have children? Clearly parents need to get involved, because the system is not thinking of the children's safety. Yes, get them away from the school if there's a bomb threat, but get them home and back in the care of their parents in a reasonable amount of time. Once again, ignorance and a fear of stepping outside the bounds of bureaucracy puts our children at risk.

You guys are all wrong. I am a Bomb Technician, and an Instructor. You don't leave little kids out in the sun. They legally can't care for themselves, so you (in charge) MUST take extra care with them. We can't even treat inmates like that. IF it is going to take more than a couple of hours, AND there is no intelligence that one of the children is involved THEN you should start calling parents who are able to respond to reduce the liability of having children standing around a potential bomb scene. This was handled poorly. The American Red Cross could even have come out. And, its' my understanding they were out there much longer than reported. This is not how I or the ATF teaches as a reasonable response. Keeping them in school DOES allow them to count them for their Federal funding, though. -Shawn

It could just as easily been 100 or it could happen in winter. But it can and does happen, so the schools need to plan for how they will cope with the different possibilities.

It's a bomb threat. This/These parents and kids are out of reality if they think getting blown up is better than sitting in the heat for a couple hours. 93 or 33 get me and my family out of any dangerious situation.

How about what Hamblen Co. is doing now b/c of bomb threats? Most kids don't EAT lunch because there is not enough time to stand in line, sit to eat and not be tardy to the next class. They now have 4 min. to change class instead of 6 min. No time to call threats in. Tardy 3 times means alternative school. Medical conditions require Dr. note. Thanks to "known false bombers" (that are still in trouble)our kids now suffer a great deal. They don't get the proper nutrition, which causes there grades to fall and health to fail.My son is starved he gets home. With a possible pre-diabetic condition, this is great!I guess I'll pack a lunch for my senior in his "Ninja Turtle" lunch box,and he can eat between classes, unless he gets caught, then that is, of course, detention!! Give these loosers a record beyond high school for their stupidity and it may stop!

Parents, get over the whinning!! So now even bomb threats half to be politically correct? I would much rather my child be a little bit thirsty and hungry than to be harmed or killed by a potential bomb. Yes, I realize that most bomb threats are just that, a threat, but it is the schools duty and I'm sure the law, that all threats are treated as such. If the school had not responded to the bomb threat in the way that they did, what would be the parents reaction then? Put that on your list ,schools: 1300 bottles of water, oh better make that chilled, for the next bomb threat or better yet, any activity that may require child to be outside for any length of time. Hmmm..maybe I should request that to be included in part of Cumberland Co. school budget...

Why is it that EVERYONE has something to complain about... no matter what the situation? Not so long ago if this had happened everyone would just be glad no one was hurt. Anyone with asthma should have rescue inhalers on their body, and I'm sure that if this kid had been in distress someone would have called EMS. As the mother/stepmother of a total of 9, 3 of which are currently high school students (not at this particular school)... I know that they skip lunch half the time already, either because they don't like to food or are too busy talking.... Stop setting the example for our kids that we can complain about everything, all the time... it's ridiculous!

My gosh whinny kids and the parents to the rescue!!!!!! Grow up. If they were at home I am sure they go without water and food for a couple of hour and gee, they go outside and do whatever. Let's sue the mean old school system. But leave them in the school and let a bomb go off and then listen to the parents. Such whinnies in todays society.

hello...it's a bomb threat...deal with it.

OMG! A COUPLE hours with NO food or water??? How did they all survive? Geez, parents are so ridiculous. They would be the 1st parents screaming if the bomb threat had not been taken seriously too. I am betting they were not allowed to call parents because they didn't want 500 parents rushing to the school and causing traffic problems in case there really was a bomb. Lighten up people we live in a new age with real threats, going without water for a few hours isn't going to kill anyone, a bomb just might!

Ya know, I am so sick of "mommies" crying out because their children have not been treated fairly. Did she hear what they said? There was a BOMB threat. Would she have felt better had they said to her child....well, we don't want to "anger" your mommie...so, go on back in the school and get your food and something to drink. BOOM, oh, too bad, you're dead, but we didn't make mommie mad! What is wrong with parents today? Everyone is trying to be politically correct, not make anyone angry, for me...I'm so tired of it all I think I'll just say is....WAKE UP, you stupid person...they were trying to save your child's life. So what if they got hot, were tired (boohoo), thirsty and hungry. Did they thirst to death, did they hunger to death, were they so tired they collapsed? Get real, stupid person. Your child came home to you alive. Can anybody shut these stupid people up?
