KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Thursday, Mothers Against Drunk Driving and Tennessee law enforcement agencies kicked off a major drunk driving crackdown for the Labor Day weekend.

Law enforcement, and mothers who have lost children to a drunk driver want to keep that from happening again.

Not a single day goes by that Darlene Addis doesn't think about her daughter and son-in-law who were both killed by a drunk driver.

"Hell. That's the only thing I can say. I still cry all the time for her. I miss her companionship."

Almost two years ago, Darlene’s 18-year-old daughter and her husband of only seven weeks were killed by a drunk driver.

Addis says, "The person, and I use that term loosely, had crossed the line and hit them head on. He was a repeat, multiple repeat DUI offender and he killed them both."

Darlene finds strength by educating others.

She joined MADD and Tennessee law enforcement agencies to announce plans to do prevent similar situations over the Labor Day weekend.

Addis says, "Whatever it takes, don't get behind the wheel and drive."

THP will use all available manpower.

Sobriety checkpoints will be set up in 11 counties in our area.

THP Lieutenant David McGill says, “It's a good tool as far as educating the public, to keep them from having too much to drink and then getting behind the wheel."

But if you do get behind the wheel, officers will not be lenient.

Lt. McGill says, "If you get caught, there's no tolerance, you're going to jail."

Darlene knows nothing can bring her daughter back, but she hopes increased enforcement will keep others from feeling the same pain.

Addis says, "Maybe it'll save another parent from the heartache we're going through because unless you've lost a child, you don't know how that hurts."

MADD supports the Labor Day crackdown as one of its key initiatives under the campaign to eliminate drunk driving.

MADD and law enforcement agencies encourage everyone to have a designated driver this weekend.
