KNOXVILLE (WVLT) – Eight days after a shooting at Central High School killed a student, staff at another Knox County high school have caught two students armed with pistols.

On Thursday, school district officials said several students at Austin-East High School alerted administrators about a student who had a gun. When they investigated, they discovered the student was on school grounds with an unloaded .32 caliber revolver. Students again alerted administrators a day later, and they discovered this time, a student had a loaded .38 caliber pistol. Both of the students were 17 years old.

“It's just mind-blowing to me, it’s crazy,” said Kim Day, an Austin-East student.

"It's of great concern and it's scary that we had two firearms recovered from a school,” said Jim McIntyre, supervisor of Knox County Schools, “but it's also important and positive that we recovered them and they didn't go undetected."

Upon learning of the incidents, some Austin-East parents said they were on edge. Just a week before, a 15 year old student was shot in the cafeteria of Central High School while waiting for the morning bell.

"I'm worried my kids, going to call me yelling, ‘mommy, mommy, they shooting up the school,’” said Javon Booker, an Austin-East parent. “That's not something to live with everyday."

The presence of security has been felt at Austin-East all year according to some students.

"We have so many security guards and teachers patrolling the hallways all the time," said Anthony Greenlee, who never expected a pair of pistols to be found in his high school.

In light of the recent gun incidents, the school system wants to give its parents some peace of mind. To do so, they will try to upgrade security on campuses. Starting on Monday, students entering Austin-East will be scanned with hand-held metal detectors and security guards will randomly search some students' backpacks.

Administrators believe the best thing they can do for school security is to build up trust and communication between the faculty and student body. That’s one of the reasons the staff found both guns at Austin-East.

"If students have information regarding their safety, then they can bring that information to an adult in the school and we can help ensure that the info is acted on," said McIntyre.

Both teens have been charged with carrying a gun onto school grounds. Besides the legal charge, Knox County Schools have a zero tolerance gun policy, which means the students could be expelled.

Jason has the right idea.If people raised their children (instead of letting the media, tv, music ect raise them) then maybe things will change. Until the change happens the school must protect our children while they are in charge of them.

How about a good recommendation to go with the good parenting that is the duty of each person that brings a life into this world....Stop condoning the Rap music, Gangster persona, and all other aspects of the drug crazed Hip Hop lifestyle that makes this life seem glorious! It is time for the parents to take back the house and smack the snot out of your mouthy, inconciderate, rude little hellian children that cause this. Put the other degenerates on a leash and leave them in the crack filled neighborhoods where they come from if they don't want to go to school for anything other than an education. I have very respectful and polite children because when they step out of line, they get a good smack on the rear end. It is time to wake up and stop living in a liberal fantasy where everyone has the right to act the way they want to! Get back to the basics of respect and the rest will fall in line.

I'm a Central High School graduate class of '98. We didn't have these problems in school. If you were going to fight you fought with your fist and in the end everyone walked away, maybe with a busted lip and black eye, but you walked away still breathing. Start the conversations at home and find out what is going on with your children before they head out to the school and if there is any signs of problems I'm am the first on at the school about my babies. The children these days seem so angry and unhappy. They need some consistent outlets for their anger and complications that is constructive and helpful. Who is there for our children when they need to express their feelings, who is giving them a place to go with their anger? It all starts at the house, around the dinner table. They all need someone they can trust to help them right now. It is getting too dangerous for us as parents and a community not to jump in an take them by the hand and say we love you and we are here to listen.

My child is a student at Northview Middle School in Kodak....a very small community. Wednesday of last week another child (boy) tried to cut my child with an ear (tounge) ring. Thankfully he moved quickly enough to avoid his skin getting slashed open. Our children are in trouble people and we need to help them. PARENTS WAKE UP!! OUR KIDS NEED US!!!
