ERWIN, Tenn. (AP) -- Two Latino men being deported from Erwin were, instead, turned loose along Interstate 81.

Unicoi County Sheriff Kent Harris told the Johnson City Press that Gregorio Estala Rodriguez and Primitivo Estala Rodriguez had been picked up by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on Tuesday and were being taken to a federal center in New Orleans.

Harris said the agents called the jail later and said superiors had told them to release the men because the center in New Orleans was temporarily closed after Hurricane Gustav blew though the city.

Harris said Gregorio Rodriguez had pleaded guilty to drug and weapons charges and Primitivo Rodriguez pleaded guilty to not having a driver's license or car insurance.

The newspaper reported it's efforts to obtain comment from ICE were unsuccessful.

Re: Billy The votes of the illegal alien is just what the politicians want. That is why they hide their head in the sand and do nothing about the very serious problem the American citizens pay to have "cheap labor" in this country. Which is anything but cheap labor when you consider the cost to our schools, health system and the cost of putting the criminal illegal aliens in jail and the cost of rounding them up and deporting. So all we can do is keep the fire to the feet of politicians in local, state, and federal levels. Complaining amongst ourselves won't get much done. Illegal aliens are basically terrorist in that they do harm to Americans in tax costs, crime against Americans, and the problem won't go away until it is addressed.

The law makers in DC don't care about illegal immigration problems for a couple of reasons. 1. They are cheap (or free) labor for the fat cats in whatever enterprise they have going on behind closed doors, and 2. The illegals can't vote. They have no voice in changing the laws and the vast ,ajority of registered voters don't care about anything enough to get out and cast their ballot. 1/3 of registered voters in Knox Co voted in the last election. Empathy at it's best...

I wish the politicians would do something about the illegal aliens. Please make them go home & come back legally like we make people from other countries do. It's like if your from Mexico, do what you want!

Ben, the politicians have no desire to rectify the issue of illegal aliens in our country. One, because they are not impacted by as the average American with the thievery, asaults, rapes, stolen itenties, school costs, hospital and medical costs. The tax payer has this daily burden and the politicians sit in their offices in D.C. and say we need open borders and all these people want is a chance. Yeah, right We have to be adament to our representives that we will not tolerate any longer their inaction on the terrible price Americans are paying for the illegal alien and the problems they bring to all of us.It is a form of terrorism to not feel completely safe in our own country.

The more the government continues to do nothing about this, the worse our problem with illegal immigration gets. If more people would be educated on what the candidates stand for and take a look at their record on illegal immigration, then we could do something about it as a civilized nation.

Apparently only American citizens are required to obey the law...

OMG WHAT IN THE WORLD. THEY TALK ABOUT THE IMMIGRATION PROBLEM, BUT DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. I AM NOT SURPRISED BY THIS. COULD THEY NOT BE HELD IN JAIL UNTIL THE STORM PASSED? THEN TAKE THEM BACK..BUT I GUESS, THEY WILL NOT SEE THEM AGAIN, THEY WILL CHANGE THEIR NAMES ECT...AND HERE WE GO AGAIN. WHAT A SHAME FOR THIS COUNTRY.

Our country is in a lot of trouble.

Is there no other facility they could have taken them to. Does these "Immigration and Custom" agents still have a job???? This is a very disturbing incident that I'm sure happens more than all us God fearing law abiding citizens want to know about. GOD Bless America we definetly need it.
