NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Bob Corker is telling Tennessee business leaders that a recession may be unavoidable even if Congress approves a $700 billion package designed to stem a financial industry meltdown.
Corker, a Tennessee Republican, said in a conference call with members of the Nashville Chamber of Commerce on Thursday that he voted for the package despite an unprecedented flood of calls to his office opposing the plan.
In Corker's words: "I think this is the beginning of many days of reckoning."
Corker says he's been asked by Republican leadership in the House to speak with skeptical GOP congressmen who helped defeat the previous version of the bill on Monday.
Rep. Zach Wamp, a Tennessee Republican, who voted against the bill earlier this week, announced on Fox News Channel's "Happening Now" program Thursday that he now plans to vote for the new version.
