NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Bob Corker is telling Tennessee business leaders that a recession may be unavoidable even if Congress approves a $700 billion package designed to stem a financial industry meltdown.

Corker, a Tennessee Republican, said in a conference call with members of the Nashville Chamber of Commerce on Thursday that he voted for the package despite an unprecedented flood of calls to his office opposing the plan.

In Corker's words: "I think this is the beginning of many days of reckoning."

Corker says he's been asked by Republican leadership in the House to speak with skeptical GOP congressmen who helped defeat the previous version of the bill on Monday.

Rep. Zach Wamp, a Tennessee Republican, who voted against the bill earlier this week, announced on Fox News Channel's "Happening Now" program Thursday that he now plans to vote for the new version.

This whole mess is a fiasco.. Socializing a big part of our country's infrastructure is unbelieveable for a free market believing America. And to add insult to injury is the tack on of the Pork. Shameful when so many are hurting and no end in sight. The liberals in this country basically pulled the plug on democracy. With a little help from their "friends" on the conservative side,I might add. Yes, we need to reconsider our possible votes this election. How we vote will determine whether our country goes on the socializing binge of the Socialized aspects of Europe. Make your vote count for America.Come what may, at least make your voice heard one way or the other.

Corker is going to vote this through "despite an unprecedented flood of calls to his office opposing the plan"? I thought elected officials were supposed to represent the vote of the people. Way to go, Corker.

Senator Coker, Secretary Paulson, and the other people who thrust this 800 billion dollar bail out on the backs of the American people have no idea if this will work. A 850 Billion dollar guess. Secretary Paulson simply picked a number out of a hat, a number so mammoth that he hoped it would attempt to help Wall Street, risky lenders and foreign interests.

My (?) comment is under the bail out package what class of income are they talking about to help middle class (?) They never give that figure so just what salery range will this help. If you are single will this help you, or what income do you have to be in if single to help you(?) And if single will we be stuck with more taxes to bail out familes, for singles never get any cuts. Please try and ans this on the 6:00PM and the 11:00PM news. Thank you
