KNOXVILLE (WVLT) – A pair of East Tennessee emergency workers responded to a 911 call this weekend that they will never forget. In police radio code it was a 10-38, which means “sick person.” The sick person was Suzanne Minter, who was going into labor.

Crystal Rogers, a paramedic for Rural/Metro and Corrine Kirby, a trained paramedic from the Knoxville Fire Department arrived at the call in a fire truck on Saturday. As they pulled up, they could see Suzanne’s father John standing at the front door of his home.

"He came out and had this weird look on his face,” said Rogers.

The paramedics were quickly lead to a bathroom, where Suzanne was laying down on the floor.

"When we walked in, we could see the baby's head was crowning,” said Kirby. “We knew the baby was on its way."

They quickly assessed the situation and realized they could not delay the deliver or risk transporting Suzanne to the hospital. The paramedics next tried to calm down the mother to be.

"She said ‘is it okay to do this,’ and I said, ‘we don’t have a choice, we're going to have to do it here,” Rogers recalled.

After setting up some equipment, they attempted to calm Suzanne. She begged them for medication, but it was already to late to administer anything that could control the pain she was experiencing.

"We told her to push,” said Kirby. “She gave one good push and it never felt so good to hear baby cry in my whole life."

Julia Paige was born full term weighing 6 lbs 4 ounces. Following the birth, both mother and daughter were taken to the hospital. It was the first time either of the paramedics had delivered a baby.

"I'm still awed,” Rogers said. “I went home and said, ‘guess what I got to do today?’ It just makes me feel so good."

Suzanne and Julia were released from the hospital late Monday morning. Both are doing great.
