KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- University of Tennessee Vols head football coach Phillip Fulmer officially announced Monday that he will step down, and won't return to coach the Volunteers next season.

What do you think of the way the Phillip Fulmer Situation was handled?
If they were going to do it, they should have waited until the end of the year
It was disrespectful, Coach Fulmer deserved better
It was the right time to make a move
He should have been given one more chance
It should have been done year(s) ago
I don't really have an opinion

"This is not an easy day for me or my family. This is not a day that I sought or accepted easily," Fulmer said.

Fulmer appeared to be fighting back tears as he made the announcement with a shaky voice.

"Our Tennessee family is united in its goals, but divided in the right right path to get there. I love Tennessee too much to her stay divided." Fulmer said, "That is why I accept the university's decision that this will be my last season as Tennessee's head football coach."

He said, " I am more than confident that our staff and players would turn this trend around. Our history proves it; our recruiting this year proves it."

Fulmer says the university has asked him to remain with the program in some capacity.

"I love this university, and I hope everyone knows that beyond a shadow of a doubt," Fulmer said.

UT Men's Athletic Director Mike Hamilton said Monday that the Kentucky game will be "Philip Fulmer Day" in recognition of Fulmer's dedication to the University of Tennessee.

"Over the last several weeks, Coach Fulmer and I have discussed in detail the direction of Tennessee football, the things that were working and issues that needed to be addressed." Hamilton said, "Through this process, the items that have been paramount were providing our young men with the greatest opportunity for success, protecting our winning tradition, and recognizing our fans' roles in our ability to achieve our goals."

Fulmer led the Vols to their sixth loss of the season Saturday against the South Carolina Gamecocks coached by former Florida Gator coach Steve Spurrier.

"Our discussions leading to Coach Fulmer's announcement today did not come without great consternation or thought, but it's in my opinion the best solution, given our current circumstances," Hamilton said.

Fulmer said he reached an agreement with school officials, deciding that it was in everyone's best interests that he not return to coach the Vols next season.

"I have nothing to say about today's announcement. I would like to say that I am a Tennessee Vol, and I will always be a Tennessee Vol." Former Vol head coach Johnny Majors said, "And I have nothing but the best of wishes and good fortune for the entire University of Tennessee, and particularly to their great football program with such great tradition."

Majors said, "And I think that the new football coach, whoever that might be chosen by the University administration, will find the University of Tennessee fans to be some of the greatest fans in America, as I have always found them to be as both a player and a coach."

Majors wouldn't comment further, saying "My tale is told."

"You talk about giving your all for Tennessee," Coach Bruce Pearl told Volunteer TV's Rick Russo before a UT Vol exhibition game at Thompson-Boling Arena, "I don't know if anybody's done it any better or any longer than Coach Fulmer.

"He's been an unbelievable friend and advisor. He loves Tennessee, he really does," Pearl said. "It's a sad day, its a sad day for all of us."

Fulmer could receive up to $6 million from the university in order to buy-out his contract.

The school may also have to spend several million dollars to buy-out Fulmer's assistant coaches.

Former Tennessee defensive end Xavier Mitchell sent a letter to the Sports Overtime team. Here's what he said:

"I cannot speak for all of the players who have worn the uniform, but I can say for most that the treatment of Coach Fulmer by the University is an outrage and embarrassment to the University of Tennessee who has took more pride in their tradition than anything else. The forced resignation is a spit in the face of Coach Fulmer, Doug Dickey, General Neyland and other great names that represent the great history of the University of Tennessee. It saddens me to see a man with great values such as Phillip Fulmer demeaned in his departure as head coach of this University. We all know what his accomplishments were and what they are to this point, and by no means do I say settle for a national and conference title that was won 10 years ago, but you’re telling me after a combined service of 34 years to this University he’s not allowed to have a down season or two? The man knows how to win, and does in a fashion that not many people can. He has not only been winning ball games for years, but being fathers to some fatherless or some kind of mentor in his tenure here as a Tennessee Volunteer. I would be naïve to say that he was liked by everyone that has stepped foot on this campus, but he is respected, hard working, fair, reliable, a terrific leader, a motivator and a teacher. I could go on. I will not sit here and say that I have agreed with all the decisions he has made over my career there, but who does. If he were a man that was liked by everyone he wouldn’t be head coach of any football team for 17 years. I love to win and I hate losing. I’m one of the most competitive people you will meet, but I guarantee that Coach Fulmer and his staff are as well, and they have more invested in it than any fan, booster, or athletic director. We are the ones as players running at 6am, lifting, meeting, practicing, going to class, traveling, playing all while trying to have some normalcy in our lives with our friends and families. The coaches are up all night watching film, game planning, away from their families and on the road recruiting trying to get a parent to trust that they have their baby boy’s best interest at heart. Coach Fulmer lived both lives along with some of those coaches on that staff. So who are those people that question the motives of how Coach Fulmer is running this program? Those are the same people who go to work and go home at night to their family after a hard day’s work. Well, I know for a fact that Coach Fulmer’s work does not end when the sun sets. There is no time clock for him. I know he has slept in his office before and I’m sure still does at some point. This isn’t a gimmick about another former player writing about his former coach. This is real life and the reality of it all is that the way this was handled was wrong. We live in a new era now where it’s all about putting fans in the stands and about the money being brought in. Boosters want to see their money put to work. I’m here to tell you that boosters have been giving their money to this university for the past 16 years. Nothing has changed. Like I said from the beginning the man knows how to win, along with the essentials of running a good program and mentoring to over a hundred boys that will leave there as prosperous young men. This isn’t some beginner coach who was given 4 years to win or he’s out, but yet we send him off as so and cover it up by saying we want him around the university. That is a cop out. Coach Brooks used to say when we would come to practice looking sloppy or we’d do something wrong that it ran down hill. So that raises my question of who was the pressure really on? If I’d given this university 34 years of my life and had a record most coaches dream of having I don’t know if I would. That’s a trust I would feel I’ve built with my University and Athletic Director. Where was that trust and loyalty? Where was the trust that I can overcome this because I’ve been doing it for almost 2 decades? I don’t think for one moment Coach Fulmer doubted that he could overcome this bump in the road whether it had been this year or next year. I don’t believe the pressure was on him at all. It started higher than that and that’s a shame to have a person that sat next to him for 16 years through the good, the bad, and the ugly sell him out to keep his own job. Coach Fulmer and his staff believed in themselves because they’ve done it for years. Why couldn’t our athletic director or president or any other of the higher ups do the same? I’m not here to protest the forced resignation of Coach Fulmer even though I don’t agree. I’m here to say that the way he was forced to leave this program was wrong. Not only wrong, but cowardly because it was obvious that Coach Fulmer didn’t quit. My heart goes out to Coach Fulmer and his family and to the staff and their families."

Sincerely Former UT football player,

Xavier Mitchell

According to their contracts:
Defensive Coordinator John Chavis - $687,500
Offensive Coordinator Dave Clawson - $687,500

Running Backs Coach Stan Drayton - $255,000
Tight Ends Coach Jason Michael - $255,000

Date line November 2013, It’s been 5 of the worst years for the Vols since Fulmer was fired. Little did anyone know then that the lack of support or contract from the Athletic Director was that important. Now that years have past and Mike Hamilton was found out and terminated (never had a clue on how to hire a football coach. Using a professional recruited to disguise his incompetence. The all Clemson schooled Hamilton single handed undermined what will be a decade of recruiting classes. Let’s hope in a few more years Tennessee will be out of the bottom of the SEC.

It has really hurt UT nation wide. He was more than just a coach to the boys. I think he should take Mike Hamilton's job. He would make a good AD. How do they think that anyone would be interested in having a job w/UT the way they treat their coaches. I really think Mike Hamilton is the one that should be fired.

I think the firing of Phil Fulmer is a mistake. I can't believe the manner in which it was done. It goes to show that giving your best years to UT is worthless in the eyes of the fickle fans and an administration that has acted like so many BUSINESS give little thought to firing people who have been there the longest or nearing retirement age. I am and have been a UT fan forever. I am a true fan and realize that there are re-building years and bad years that go along with the good and great years. To Coach Fulmer, I would like to say thanks for all you've done for us and our teams. You are a class act. The grass is not always greener on the other side and many of fair weather fans will regret this. I truly sad about the way you were treated. I always thought UT was better than this.

Tennessee Football will never see me wear orange again!! Never will they have another $ spent on "team spirit or clothes"!! I can not support an organization that has no loyalty to longevity or dedication. I guess a sign of the times. Money is the reason for the season!!

It was time for a change. I don't feel sorry for him. He didn't feel bad for doing it to Johnny Majors when he was having heart surgery. What goes around comes around!!

I have personally meet Coach Fulmer several times, he always took time to be friendly with a friendly hand shake. H e was a great moral person I'm positive, but unfortunaly there is no place on the scoreboard except for points scored. I wish hime well. He has been a credit to the UT. As old saying goes all good things must come to an end.

MIKE HAMILTON AND THE REST OF THE ADMINISTRATION SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES HOW THEY HANDLED THE PHILIP FULMER SITUATION. IF THEY FELT THEY HAD TO DO SOMETHING, WHY COULDN'T THEY HAVE WAITED UNTIL THE END OF THE SEASON? MY HEART GOES OUT TO THE PLAYERS WHO STILL HAVE TO PLAY 3 REGULAR GAMES AND POSSIBLY A BOWL GAME. IT WAS A SAD DAY IN TENNESSEE. AND YES I AM A SEASON TICKET HOLDER AND TRAVEL TO AWAY GAMES, ALSO. I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR COACH FULMER ON THE NEXT VOL WALK AND THE LAST HOME BALLGAME. IT WILL DEFINITELY BE SAD.

Mike Hamilton has never done things with class or in a manner that is becoming of the university. He promotes himself and grossly mismanages our athletic program. He should resign (or be fired) as well and Coach Fullmer take his place.

WOW what a fickle bunch of fans, or are they really fans? A true fan does not leave the team behind during a losing season. A true fan motivates, cheers and supports "their" team no matter what. Its unfortunate that the Vols are having a tough year.Coach Fulmer is an excellent coach, and truth be told he is much more than a coach to players and true fans alike that truely follow what he has accomplished. Maybe that the team is playing to their best ability and need to want to be more successful on the field. Bottom line is the team that makes the least mistakes wins. The Athletic Director is the one who should be fired. Maybe a change in that position would help. Motivation, drive, success is all affected by attitude. The AD was on a witch hunt to cover his own butt. Why punish a great coach and a potentially great team. No one wins when under threat. Fulmer, a great man, an amazing coach! He should be the AD. Stop the "if we win we're fans" that is not a fan or supporter.

What has Mike Hamilton done for this program? Collect a check? Go out for dinner and an afternoon of golf? Show up at game time and expect a victory and a pat on the back? Vols need a change? Maybe. Not like this! Coach Fulmer deserved so much more ~ he deserveds some respect! Mr. Hamilton have you heard of dancing with the one that brung ya? I hope your days are numbered and I hope that you will clean out your office very soon. when you are gone.. who will remember you? your name will not be remembered as history at UT- you are a coward!

I think We as a VOL NATION need to stand up and kick the mike hamilton guy out an bring fulmer back we def are not gonna be able get a coach after everyone has saw how dirty Tennessee staff is.

I want to say to the UT Athletic Dept... You will rue the day you ousted Coach Fulmer. I hope you realize over the next couple of years what a huge mistake you've made. I promise you that nobody, I repeat, nobody, will be able to come CLOSE to coach Fulmer's tremendous record at UT. I'm so disgusted with UT over this that after this season, I'm going to be a Bama fan. Long live Coach Fulmer!!!

Posted by: RollTideRoll Location: Birmingham on Nov 4, 2008 at 02:52 PM
Speaking as a Bama fan, it's great to see Phat Phil get what he deserves. He stabs Coach Majors in the back to become the head coach and becomes a "secret witness" for the NCAA against Bama. The Great Pumpkin does go on to win a national championship before going stagnant. Boo-hoo. Don't feel sorry for that joker. What goes around comes around and he's still taking his MILLIONS to the bank. Personally, I wanted him to stay so that Coach Saban could beat his brains in each year. I feel most sorry for all the Knoxville buffets and doughnut shops that won't be the same!

Posted by: Linda Location: TN on Nov 4, 2008 at 02:06 PM
Sorry about Fulner losing his job,you know how society is,as you get old they start looking for someone to replace you.I believe UT would benifit more if they would dwell on education, and not, sports, its become a god for may people. As a student at UT,fifteen or twenty minutes of a classroom is wasted talking about sports, instead of the class study.I think it all should be cut out period ,and, be a more convertive school.

Posted by: tony Location: knoxville on Nov 4, 2008 at 01:36 PM
I hate the fact that the man lost his job, but alot of the former players, and the media have been drinking the orange koolaid for a long time. The vols can no longer compete with Florida, Alabama, LSU,Georgia.Their talent level has consistently dropped, and that falls back on the coach. This offense is like a 76 pinto, and the opponents are driving porsches.

Posted by: Anna Location: T on Nov 4, 2008 at 01:21 PM
Its a sad time for UT. If they were going to do this to Coach Fulmer they should have waited till the end of the season. Doing it now will cast a bad shadow over the remaining season. Anna

Posted by: Cheryl Location: Knoxville on Nov 4, 2008 at 01:17 PM
Those who made this final decision made a huge mistake. Fulmer has meant a great deal to the University and that Team and it's embarrassing when a group of people can stand behind a man for so long and then just turn on him so quickly. It odesn't say alot about loyalty at the University of Tennessee. I am also shocked that suddenly one man is blamed for the failures of so many.

Posted by: Ann Location: Knoxville on Nov 4, 2008 at 01:02 PM
BIG MONEY CALLS FOR BIG RESULTS. I'M SURE THE FULMER FAMILY WILL CRY ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK. WHAT ABOUT THE STUDENTS THAT ARE WORKING HARD TO GET AN EDUCATION WHILE ALL THE BIG MONEY GOES TO SPORTS. IT'S JUST A GAME. THERE ARE SO MANY LIFE AND DEATH SITUATIONS OUT THERE AND EVERYONE IS WORRIED ABOUT A MULTI-MILLIONAIRE WHO DIDN'T DO HIS JOB. LACK OF DISIPLINE DIDN'T HELP THE PLAYERS BUT HURT THEM. CRY FOR THOSE WHO NEED MEDICATION, HOUSING, FOOD AND OTHER LIFE NECESSITIES AND PRAY FOR OUR COUNTRY AND THOSE IN NEED.

I have 2 teams for everyone to think about. 1. Michigan (Lloyd Carr) 2. Nebraska (Frank Solich)... be careful what you wish for.....

Posted by: Liz Location: Knox on Nov 4, 2008 at 10:22 AM
While this years team performance was horrible,Phil Fulmer should not have been treated in this manner. He has performed very well in the past.I feel ashamed of myself because I was one of the people who has been angry and said,"oh they should get a new coach"but the manner in which they handled this was absolutely atrocious. As I watched Phil Fulmer talk it was obvious he was near tears.May GOD bless him and his family.

Posted by: Brian Location: Rockford, TN on Nov 4, 2008 at 10:09 AM
Unfortunately for Fulmer this is a business. When the crowds stop coming to spend money and the big donors stop their checks a change must be made. Bottom line Coach Fulmer is responsible for the this team, good or bad. Yes I agree that this change will have effects for the future, however we are not aware of the lost of revenue to the school and the full impact on local businesses over the past 2 years. It is and always will be a business, do not forget that. If any of you stop performing in your job you will get the same fate.

Posted by: Wilma Location: Knoxville on Nov 4, 2008 at 09:39 AM
Fulmer should have been given another year. The stats are proof of his capilities. It's not all his fault.

Posted by: Maria Location: Gray, TN on Nov 4, 2008 at 09:35 AM
All of you "fair weather fans" should be totally ashamed of yourselves!!!! I think you all SUCK and Tennessee will suffer tremendously when Coach Fulmer goes away! Way to go people! All I have heard is FIRE FULMER, FIRE FULMER from people....now those same people are posting saying how sorry they are that he is going to leave...give me a freaking break!!!! I never thought I would see the day when I am ashamed to wear orange! AND its not because we are losing this season! NOW----everyone think of our players out there these next three games and feel really proud of yourselves! You have undoubtedly ruined some Seniors' last few memories of their college careers! Pat yourselves on the back!

Maybe if he could have kept more of his players out of jail.

Posted by: Becky Location: Knoxville on Nov 4, 2008 at 09:24 AM
I am very sad to see coach Fulmer go. He is a great coach. We've just had a couple of bad years. Give the guy a break! You can't have a winning season every year. I believe we would benefit from firing Mike Hamilton instead. Isn't he the one that really needs to go? My heart goes out to the Fulmer family.

Posted by: Alison Location: Athens, TN on Nov 4, 2008 at 08:59 AM
Fire Mike Hamilton and get Phillip Fulmer back! Coach Fulmer has represented Tennessee with class and made us proud to be a Vol for many years! Coach Fulmer will be missed! MISTAKE...MISTAKE...MISTAKE!!!!!!!

My name is Mike Dipstick Hamilton, and I approve this message. Now that I've gotten rid of the 3 main coaches, I will seek to close down the Athletics Dept.--I'll leave Bruce to teach a class on divorce care. Who can stop me? The vultures (Basilio, Pennington, Hyams, Adams) all support me.

It's hard to say what Coach Fulmer feels at this time. I know he probably feels betrayed. It may have been time for a change at Tennessee, but you also don't know what kind of heart his players put into the game whether they were 7th or 1st in the recruting class, if you have a group of kids with no heart and motivation within themselves then the best coach in the country could not have a good season. How I know this is having coached in alot smaller level, I have been there. A good coach should have the kids best interest at heart first, as for the fans all I can say is how we react when were down and hitting hard times not only affects the coaches and school, but it has a big impacts on your players. It's always easy to sit in the stands or at home watching games on tv and say what needs to be done. If most of these people were such a good coach they would'nt be sitting in the stands or watching on tv, they would be coaching somewhere. As for coach Fulmer all the best.

YES ITS A DISGRACE HOW COACH WAS FORCED OUT I DO BELIVE THE WHOLE SCHOOL SHOULD BE TURNED OVERINCLUDING THE ATHELETIC DIRECTOR AND THE TOP DOG YOU NOTICE I DID NOT SAY TOP VOL BECAUSE VOLS TAKE CARE OF THEIR ON. GO VOLS.

Posted by: bob Location: loudon on Nov 4, 2008 at 06:01 AM
The person who should be fired is the athletic director. Isn't he the guy who just extended fulmer's contract and increased his buyout clause, knowing that the taxpayers and students will foot the bill? Fulmer is a good guy and maybe he should be replaced as other company heads of businesses that don't do well. But the Benedict Arnold in this situation is the athletic director who has deceived and misled the University, alumni and fans.

Now that it is over, some of you "Fans" had better learn something really quick. UT is not the only college football team out there, and not every coach's dream job is to coach UT and put up with the toothless bunch of redneck that hangout around here on sports talk radio thinking they can coach better than the head coach. I mean, honestly, surely people don't really believe the nonsense they spew over the air-ways. And, understand this, IT IS NOT EVERY COACH'S DREAM TO COACH TENNESSEE. And, before anyone says it, YES I was born and raised here and yes I do love Tennessee, but, get real people, you are not going to just go out and get just anyone you what!!!!!. Cutcliff would be committing professional suicide if he came back and the only reason Steve Spurrier will come to Neyland Stadium is to whip whoever is coaching UT. And, Adam, I too feel sorry for who ever the next guy is, because Hitch, Jim, Small Mike and that other bunch on sports talk have the rope and tree ready.

Posted by: Scott Location: Knoxville on Nov 4, 2008 at 02:38 AM
How about replacing Mike Hamilton with Phillip Fulmer. What a cowardly little shrimp of a man. Hamilton is the one who should be out, what are you gonna do Mike stick us a yankee in there to screw things up a little more? The fans aren't going to stand for this. And to all those idiots (couch coaches) calling the sports talk shows wanting Fulmer out, SHAME ON YOU!!! why don't you guys try his job for one season, dare ya! Coach Fulmer IS Tennessee Football. Shame on those of you who made this extemely STUPID decision. Tennessee Football has disgraced by this decision and to me will never be the same.

Posted by: Adam Location: Knoxville on Nov 4, 2008 at 01:44 AM
i just want to comment that its nice to see people around here with a brain in their head. most of the comments on here are factual and make sense. i listen to talk radio alot and want to tear my ears off at most of the idiots who call in meaningless questions and comments. and for those who wanted fulmer out...it took florida to go through a zook before they got a meyer, alabama to go through a shula before they got a saban. how many do u think tennessee with go through before they get another fulmer? instant success is not going to happen. i feel sorry for the next guy, his head with be in a noose before his team even steps on the field. which i have to say will not include a lot of players like eric berry, who mike hamilton just made his decision to go pro for him. and this 7th ranked recruiting class we have now...well, u'll see the fallout from that in the next couple of weeks. good luck fulmer. i know u love this university, but i wouldnt stick around in any capacity. not now.

Being a true Tennessee fan doesn't require us to support bad coaching. Tennessee has been going downhill for years now and Fulmer has been firing assistant coaches and blaming them for the poor seasons. How long did you think he could keep doing that? Some call us fair weather fans, because we don't support losing teams. The truth is we want our teams to be among the best in the country year after year. With Tennessee's history, there's no reason we shouldn't be among the best every year. Fulmer was making millions of dollars each year and he wasn't producing very good results. How many of you would still be able to keep your jobs or your businesses, if you had results like he's had for the past few years? Don't feel sorry for him. He's getting 6 million dollars for nothing now. And he'll probably get hired to coach another team. Let's just hope we can finally get a coach here who isn't too fat and happy to try to make Tennessee football successful again.

It says it all in the good book that the love of money is the root of all evil. I am sadden to see Coach Fulmer being forced to step down from a position that he truly loves and I believe that the University will not be able to find another coach that truly loves UT like Fulmer. His roots are in this state and the love of football is one of his passions and his blood runs orange. I can not see an outsider come in and have the love that Fulmer has. He will be missed by alot of fans. Whoever it was that was putting the pressure on I hope that they can lay their heads down each night and ask theirself did I do the right thing or was I just thinking of myself and my wallet. I think Spurrier said the best "He hit the lottery". Coach if you happen to read this just remember that you are a legend and even though this is a hard day for you, you went out on top of Rocky Top. Take your family and go around the world on the millions that you will receive. You derserve it.

In my opinion Coach Fulmer was done terribly wrong! He has been a terrific asset to the UT staff, his record shows that. Yes this has been an off year, but this is a growing year for the team. People are so fickle now, when your winning your the best, but loose one game & they want to run you out on a rail. I just want to say to Coach Fulmer, YOU'RE THE GREATEST !!!!!

Posted by: Brooke Location: Murfreesboro on Nov 4, 2008 at 12:43 AM
I, too am just 18 and i can't believe after a couple of bad season that they are going to hang one of the winningest active coaches out to dry. I can't imagine what it will be like seeing someone other than Phillip Fulmer lead out beloved Vols throught the "T". This is a terrible loss. What is the director thinking? And talk of them wanting to buy out the rest of the coaching staff's contracts. John Chavis is an excellent deffensive coordinator. If they are trying to improve Tennessee fooball, getting rid of Chavis is not the way to go about that.

I just cried when I heard Fulmer! I am not going to watch U.T anymore. If coach get a new job-I am going to his team's #1 fan

Posted by: Barb Location: Knoxville on Nov 4, 2008 at 12:25 AM
The players should be blamed for this too. One for not keeping his grades, others not keeping themselves from getting hurt. Coach is not all for the blamed.

I am very upset that Phillip Fulmer is leaving. It all comes down to the donners amd Mike Hamilton. Money talks to much in the sports department. If you you have a bad season and they watch you like a hawk to find ways to take you out. Fulmer has been good for football here. Yes, you are going to have a rebuilding after the graduation of your top guns like Petyon and others. Fulmer has worked hard to find guys to replace these top guns , but it is going to take time. You can't bulid a Dream Team in a season that all click at the same tme. I am sorry, this is a complete railroad. Poltics don't belong in sports. You will never have a head coach that gives his whole life to his team not only on the field ,but as a friend, mentor, subsitute Dad,and just a listener to team members off the field. His passion for the sport and team runs deep. UT has lost me forever for any support that I have made in the past. You have torn this state apart to those believe that Fulmer needs to stay

Posted by: Patsy Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 11:50 PM
I hope Mr. Hamilton realizes early next season what a mistake he has made. But as a former employee of the university, I know how needing a scapegoat is always the option taken. Politics should not be allowed to come in to play, but money and greed talks and CLASS walks. Coach Fulmer is more class than any high dollar contributor connected to the university. My vehicles were always covered in orange and white until 5:00pm Mon.- Nov.03,2008 and this will never be again. I feel like Mr. Hamilton did not fix the problem, but only extended it. Coach Fulmer I hope only the best for you and yours, after your years of dedication. I invested 22 years to them and the appreciation was expressed in the same way. And my message to any future coach applicants "GO THE OTHER WAY"

Words cannot express how sad it makes me to hear this news about Coach Fulmer being done this way. He IS UT Football. He cares more about UT Football than any other football coach ever has or ever will. I think that whomever's decision this was to get rid of Coach Fulmer, should be fired and banished from UT. He did NOT deserve this and I am furious about it. What a sad day for UT Football. Coach Fulmer, if you read this, please know that the majority of us out here love you and always will. You have done more for UT Football than anyone ever did. You gave you life to it. You do NOT deserve this!!

Posted by: Derrick Location: Morristown on Nov 3, 2008 at 11:26 PM
The bottom line is that our team was not that talented this year.If Phil wouldnt have kicked off key players over the years for mistakes he might not be in this situation. The biggest problem was not getting high caliber players like everyone else in the SEC. We had a good recruiting season on paper over the years but not on the field.Fulmer should stay but recruit better and not be so harsh.

Posted by: Joan Location: Morristow n on Nov 3, 2008 at 11:25 PM
The job Phil Fulmer should take at UT is that of Athletic Director. I would not take a position at UT other than that. Mike Hamilton is a "hatchet man" who got rid of a good man in Rod Delmonico, a very good baseball coach as well as Buzz Peterson who was fired without given more time. I will not be watching UT football next year and have also lost interest in the basketball season, men and women. I am a UT grad.

Posted by: Tyler Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 11:25 PM
I've lived in knoxville my whole life. I couldn't have been a bigger supporter of fulmer after the 5-6 season three years ago. But this is the time that we look in a new direction. Ok, be sad that his press conference went sadly. Look this is Tennessee, his legacy went on and it was good. The thing is it's time to compete and we were not. Simple as that. Coaches retire, they quit, or get fired that's the life of a head coach. Do not forget this is the University of Tennessee, we have to pack 108,000 people into the stands every saturday and it was not happening with fulmer. So many new coaches have thrived in the SEC the past few years let's give a new coach a chance. The time is now.

My Father, Grandfather, Mother, Uncles, Aunts...all went to U T. I am disappointed in the manner Coach Fulmer was dismissed. General Neyland, pronounced differently than you say it would not be proud of the way this was handled! The fans I know continue to support U T football....even during the down times, those who don't I cannot consider to be fans! This is a sad time for all of us who wear the ORANGE and WHITE PROUDLY!!

Posted by: barbara on Nov 3, 2008 at 11:17 PM
Mike Hamilton and the powers that be have embarrassed the University of Tennessee today by their handling of this situation. Could the demeanor have been more cold? I think Coach Fulmer should have been given one more year.

Posted by: Shea Location: Maryville on Nov 3, 2008 at 11:16 PM
R. Coleman said it best when he said in today's earlier broadcast - Coach Fulmer CREATED the standard that everyone is holding him to. I am not even a UT fan, but this man deserved much more respect than what he's being given. It is sad to see such a strong tradition come down to money. Whoever is chosen to replace him will have a very hard time filling his shoes.

Posted by: John Location: Harrogate, TN on Nov 3, 2008 at 11:13 PM
Coach Fulmer should have been given one more year to turn it around. Look at Penn State who almost got rid of Joe Pa a few years ago. Coach Fulmer is a top notch good person who, for what all he did for UT he earned the right to go out on his own terms. A "tribute" at the UK game? Ridiculous! It will be like going to a funeral of someone alive!

I bleed ORANGE and so does Phil! This is a very sad day for UT!Fire Hamilton not Phil!Fulmer cares so deeply for UT and his football team, no one will ever have the heart that he does.He is such a great guy and does not deserve the direspect he has recieved in the past weeks.Fulmer cannot catch, run, throw, & tackle for the team, the boys need to step up and play as a team.TENNESSEE FOOTBALL will never be the same for me or my family.Phil we will miss you, you are TN as was John Ward.GOOD LUCK PHIL WE LOVE YOU!KICK BACK AND ENJOY YOUR MILLIONS, U DESERVE IT!!!!!!

The University has just lost a class act in Phil Fulmer. He has more class that Johnny Majors could ever dream of having. Who cares what Johnny Major thinks about the situation, he is just an old drunken has been. I only hope that whoever replaces Fulmer causes Mike Hamilton to loose his job. Hamilton got lucky with Bruce Pearl, he won't get that lucky with another.

Posted by: Suzanne Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 10:42 PM
Coach Fulmer...you are a class act! Sorry that the University you loved and dedicated yourself to couldn't rise to the same level of class today. I'm sure there is more to this situation than any of us will ever know. But you have selflessly used your position, your talents and your finances to bring awareness to so many causes (The Jason Foundation, etc.) and the beneficiaries of those programs should forever be indebted to you. You are more than a football coach, you're a Tennessee boy through and through and a dedicated husband and parent. I am so sorry for you and your family that it ended this way. I know better things are in store for you though it stings right now. Finally, I think Johnny Majors could have shown more class during his interview with Mr. Hobby this evening. Still bitter after all these years? Let it go, dude.

Posted by: Kathy Location: Rockwood on Nov 3, 2008 at 10:27 PM
The Universtiy of Tennessee is a great college and has always been a part of East Tennesseeans as family. As is Fulmer. I do not blame him for all of Tennessees' football program as failure. Some are forgetting that the VOlS have lost several key players due to thier personal misdemeanors which left the VOLS in their rankings today. Fulmers decision to let these key players go was the right thing for UT. On the other hand people are forgetting that the VOLS also have a new offensive coordinator. And now the VOLS have to rely on a new coach as well? SO we really cannot blame Fulmer for everything!

As bad as it was it now seems as if a trusted leader is leaving. Even with all the fair weather fans any school that aquires him as a coach will get someone who will give his all for the team and school. Mike spoke about tradition at the confrence but it seems the dollar is the leading factor. I wish Phil the best and will be at the ky game to pay my respects. If you thought phil was bad wait until the coaching rollercoaster starts. GOOD LUCK COACH!!

Posted by: PSUandUTfan Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 10:08 PM
As a long time PSU fan I am proud the fans of PSU never gave up on Paterno. Never was he asked to leave and he never lost the respect of the fans. I am also a UT fan and I am appalled by the way the fans of UT have turned on a coach that has given so many years of his life to this team. Yes, both coaches were paid well, yes both coaches had good and bad years. However, with men like Paterno and Fulmer to guide these athletes and to influence them with their values and morals we just don't realize how fortunate we have been. I hope the individuals that made this decision can justify their actions - did they let financial backers make the decision - did they realize what an example this sets? I doubt it. I hope Coach Fulmer knows there are many fans that believe in his talent and appreciate the time and effort he has given to the UT vols. We will miss you and only wish we had the influence to keep you as the coach of UT for many more years.

hate to see him go, but it is time for a change somewhere. guess the AD thought it was the HC. fulmer leaves a legacy of orange and white, and he will be remember for that and all he has done with such great class. he should be proud and hold his head high. if we're making a change, whoever it will be is going to have some major shoes to fill. and that change needs to know who fulmer is was and always will be. fulmer vol fans love you! when UT lost we were angry, today we are sad. not sure who we were angry at, but it seems as though fulmer always got it when ut lost. shouldn't be that way, but ut fans love to win and fulmer certainly loves winning too, and he spoiled with all of those wins (150 to be exact). go ut and make fulmer proud with these last 3 games. WE LOVE U COACH FULMER! God bless you and your family!

SDG in loudon: Whether the former kicked off players where acting like thugs or not you still dont kick off your best players for mistakes im sure youve made mistakes. Fulmer is in this situation because of not having better talent and to kick off your better players is just stupid. Like i said i dont know what the players done but im sure they wasnt thugs or he wouldnt have recruited them in the first place. If my son played for TN and got kicked off the team for a mistake that wasnt justified id be pissed.I think fulmer is in this mess because of recruiting. The past few years TN hasnt had the high caliber players that it should get. This losing season is not because of fulmer its because of the players i hate to say it but the truth hurts where not that talented. We had a good recruiting class on paper but not on the field. So if only "thugs" are good football players and it takes a new coach to get them then so be it.By the way fulmer should stay, just recruit better and dont be so harsh

Well, now it's over. Fulmer, thank you for all that you've accomplished. You are a great man and a class act. It is time to hea & the best way to heal is to hire a new coach. Here is my suggestion: We need Mike Leach; he's the head coach at Texas Tech. Get him in here. You know if he can recruit at Texas Tech, the guy can recuit here. Who wants to be in Lubbock anyway?!?!?

Coach Fulmer has more class in his little toe than most coaches. (especially that grumpy old man John Majors.) Let it go already! Coach Fulmer you are what being a VOL is all about. You are loved and respected.

I think UT would done better if they would just do away with their Football program just as ETSU do and was sucessful in it.The schools that have done this have become better schools focused on education than partying, and, haven't tolerated it,they master on education, and later in life have a vocation than being a football major,if they make the NFL ,after their retired ,they can't do anything but commericals,no working experience to fall back on.This is differance from liberial schools and converative ones, who change the world and make it better by helping others than just winning a super bown or the suger bowl.

Amy in Morristown: You obviously haven't read these comments. Most ARE supporting him Derrick in Morristown: Football, as in any other sport, is all about dicipline! How can you have dicipline on the field if you don't have dicipline off the field? Coach Fulmer ran a respectable program. If these guys wanted to act like thugs, then they did not deserve to run through the "T". Also everybody wanted change. Enter Clawson and the new offense. It takes time to learn something new. "We are too conservative" you said. This new offense with its 40 or so formations would have eventually changed that. Change doesn't happen overnight! I think Fulmer was trying to give fans the change they demanded but they didn't give him the chance. Is it too late to change you mind Coach?

It is truly an end of an era. I would like to commend Coach Fulmer on his stellar career at UT. Change is something the world wants these days. However, this change will come at a price. We are going to have to start at square one, a clean slate, and often times that means some bad times before good. This is not an quick-fix people. This is the beginning of a lot of heartache and reflection for everyone, whether you wanted Coach Fulmer gone or not.

Posted by: Bill Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 08:05 PM
I am so angry at the administration and the athletic department They have showed NO class what so ever and a complete lack of financial intelligence. Last year Mike Hamilton extended the coaches contact this year they terminate it. They deal with money like Congress because it is not theirs. They are irresponsible. Now they fire Coach Fulmer before in the middle of the season when he has had a bad year after hiring a new offensive coordinator new untested quarterbacks. Extremely poor form and it shows bad judgment, bad sportsmanship and makes the University look really really bad. I am ashamed to be associated with such a small minded group of people. Coach Fulmer has dedicated countless hours to this school, its students, the athletes and its athletic department. He has given up so much of his time with his family. Even though the team has had a bad few years, he deserves so much more than how he has been treated by the school. I have great respect for Coach Fulmer. All the best.

Having been a Tennessee fan all of my life, I think a new direction was coming for the football program. I do believe that the move has handled very poorly. Coach Fulmer has been a true VOLUNTEER all his life. The AD dept could have shown the only living coach that gave them/us a National Championship and the dean of current SEC coaches a higher Level of RESPECT> I am the FIRST FAN THAT Thinks they should announce re-naming Neland Stadium to NELAND/FULMER Stadium. And give this Man who has given his best and all to this program something back that they took away from a great Volunteer Today. Many times in life we respect people after they leave this world. Let all Vol fans stand-up,move forward, and respect our history and heritage here at Tennessee. Then, lets all stand and support the future coach, They are going to need us.

Hope all you naysayers and fair weather fans are happy. You have not only devastated the entire Fulmer family & current players & former players, you have also devastated all true Voluneer Fans. He is a great coach, a class act. Be careful what you wish for, it just may come true.

I got a dog in the hunt, I grew up in Nashville and went to school at UTKnox, It is my belief that the Athletic Director caved to the pressure of the wolves, over taking the high road for a coach that gave his all to Tennessee, you reap what you sow, some say , and it is my belief that it will be a debacle the likes of firing Solich at Nebraska!! We should have used Penn State as a bench mark, did they fire Joe when the going got tough , NO, and where are they Now. Let the second guessing begin.

Posted by: Fred Location: Morristown on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:53 PM
I do not feel sorry for Fulmer or anyone being bought out for millions of dollars. Fulmer is carting off a truckload of money and Johnny Majors took his in a wheel barrow. Majors can now take the dagger out of his back and end the 16-year pain.

Posted by: Bob Location: Oak Ridge on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:51 PM
This is a sad day for UT football. Fulmer was second only to Neyland in what he did for UT Football. All of those who want the past of Majors, you can have it. For someone who lived it, no thanks. Majors' last 4 years were only good because he promoted Fulmer to Offensive Coordinator. How do you call that a mistake? I don't know what went down to get Fulmer promoted, I do know that Majors was an arrogant man who loved UT Football, ALMOST as much as he loved himself, and came back too soon from surgery instead of recovering properly. You want to talk mediocrity, talk Majors, you want to talk about a coach second only to Neyland, then that name is Fulmer. Was it time for Fulmer to go, probably. However, let's be honest about the past. Majors did great things for this University, but he was also down right embarrassing. Fulmer hasn't come close to similar embarrassment. NO team owned Fulmer the way were owned by Bama under Majors, not even Florida.

my comments Mr Fulmer,s is the best coach UT has ever had mike hamiltion should be the one to leave UT not coach FULMER

I'll leave the naming of a new coach to the mastermind who fired the current one. On Mark Packer's panel: Heath Shuler did not give a direct answer 'cause he's too much of a politician, they ride the middle of the fence. Johnny Majors just showed how bitter he still is at Fulmer, he's been waiting 17 years for this moment. I wish he had not gotten the opportunity to respond. Sad day for the VOL NATION! I wish the Fulmers the best.

Posted by: Mike Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:47 PM
It's a sad day! Had I known Hamilton was really gonna pull this, I would've written in PHIL FULMER's name for President! Talk about change? This change is going to come back and bite UT on the rear end. If Spurrier is hired to replace Fulmer, I'll tell everyone the big orange T on my cap stands for Texas! No Spurrier! Thanks, Fulmer for all you did. No coach could ever replace you. You are UT football and are deserving of better treatment. Just take the $6 million and tell the "loyal orange fans" to kiss your ass. Best of luck to you and to Hamilton IF he survives this!

Posted by: Shanna Location: New Tazewell, TN on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:46 PM
I really really hate to see him go. I'm only 18 and he has been the coach of Tennessee as long as I can remember. It's just a sad and depressed feeling to see such a loved coach leave because of the situation he was in. To me it doesn't feel like "Tennessee" without him. He will be missed!!!! I just hope the next coach can earn the love and respect of Tennessee fans like Fulmer did.

Posted by: Angie Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:46 PM
I am not a football follower. I may not understand the importance of "winning". I feel like Coach Fulmer is not the only contributing factor of this seasons poor performance, but he is the one taking the blame. What about players, other coaching staff, fans and all involved with UT football. You have to have good students to achieve good scores. I compare this to teachers being "graded" on student performance. You can do everything to teach a child, but you can not "make" them perform well on tests. Fulmer's successes and past performance prove he is an excellent coach and can get the job done. One poor season should not determine his future with UT football. I listened to his speech on the radio this afternoon and heard his love for UT and his dedication to UT football in every tear he shed. I feel that he should be praised for his performance through out the years and should not be asked to step down based on ticket sales and lack of fan support. Thank you for years of service.

Hey leave Majors out of it he got his share of bashing and backstabbing and still speaks highly of the university and those rumors of drinkly were so off base and untrue.

In today's win and win yesterday world of college football, i'm not surprised. I do however feel Fulmer's time was drawing to an end at UT. BUT he should never assume the total blame nor do i think he will....as it takes players executing plays...last time i checked Phillip Fulmer cannot pass, block, tackle, or make a hand-off in a NCAA Div. 1 game. Good luck to the University in finding his replacement....it takes time...please see Nebraska....to bring a program back after falling off.

Posted by: Wayne Location: Middlesboro, Kentucky on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:37 PM
Thanks Fulmer you are a true class act.Your record says it all. not one NCAA violation and a top notched win/loss record. you will coach again and kick butt in the SEC. KY fans

I am very sad about Fulmer being pushed out at UT. I really think it's time for the university to get rid of Mike Hamilton!!!! Everyone in the athletic dept.,needs to be put up for review! I have been a fan for over 40 years but, no more football for me and my family! All I can say about this act of disrespect, Mike, the wrong man was pushed out! You are the one that should go and now!!!! Good luck to a great man, his family, and a wonderful coach!!!!!

What comes around goes around. Sometimes it takes a while, but it always happens. (In this case 16 years.) The only difference is Coach Fulmer's co-ordinate wasn't stabbing him in the back like he did Coach Majors. I know the man did an excellent job but really now he must know exactly how Coach Majors felt when he was stabbing him in the back.

Posted by: gofortears Location: Harrogate on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:34 PM
I wish Coach Fulmer all the best and wouldn't blame him a bit if he told them to take their offers of another position and cram them where the sun don't shine. They (the University) did him wrong. If they wanted to change coaches, seems that they should be looking at the new offensive coordinator. Last year with Cutcliffe they turned it around and had a good season, now we have Clawson and it's been a disaster. Speaks volumes. How long before Pat Summit or Bruce Pearl is next?

coach fulmer deseverd to go out on his own terms

Posted by: joe Location: crossville on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:28 PM
I thiink a lot of UT fans have come to except a so so season.IT was 47 years before we won the championship in 1998 I would like to hope it will not be another 47 before the next one! I give coach his proper respect for the great record he has had but it's time took look outside the house and bring home a NATIONAL TITLE. My choice for the next coach is WILL MUSCHAMP he takes an average defense at TEXAS and COACHES them up to be winners! He is enthusiastic and excited about beating up on people! Something TENNESSEE has been missing lately. So with that I LEAVE YOU WITH THIS WE ARE NOT EXCEPTING NO MORE SO SO SEASONS BCS BOWLS OR BUST!

The sudden out pouring of support for coach Fulmer is amazing. Most of you are the same people calling for his head a few weeks ago if not Saturday night. When will you all understand that this is the business of big time college football. Sure coach Fulmer was successful during the late 90's but look at the numbers now and look at the lack of discipline in recent years by some of his recruits. IT IS ALL ABOUT YOUR PRESENT PERFORMANCE NOT WHAT YOU HAVE DONE IN THE PAST. This program is clearly on the decline and not getting the athletes to compete with the Florida, Georgia, or Alabamas. You may all say "Well thats not what is important" but when you support a program you want it to at least be competitive and Tennessee isn't anymore and clearly won't be until a change is made. The man is going to be OK. He is walking away with roughly 6 Million dollars and will surface at another school where the will not be as much pressure for wins. This is the right decision to make. Move on

Posted by: Judy Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:28 PM
I cannot beleive what I am reading! Do you guys not understand that there is more to coaching than just winning? He was/is a mentor to the players. Grooming young men for the future is more important than a winning season. I am going to remember all the good he has done for our Tennessee boys. Phil, you are loved by those who knew what positive you did, not any of the negative they want to portray!

WRONG SOLUTION UT

Posted by: sdg Location: Loudon on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:27 PM
I agree with you Matt. Fulmer brought Tennessee Football to a new level. He gave Tennessee all he had for almost 40 years. He deserves better. "Fans" could take a few lessons from Coach Fulmer on CLASS!! Notice I said "class" not acting like an A**!

Posted by: Tressa B Location: Alcoa on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:27 PM
I am so disappointed in the Athletic Department. YOU HAVE MADE A MISTAKE...

Posted by: Derek Location: Corbin, KY on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:27 PM
Fire Hamilton...keep Fulmer...he took this program to the next level...he lost most of offensive staff last year and is trying to rebuild the staff. Fulmer is class; Hamilton is a joke! He knows nothing about UT and should be run out of town on a rail!!!

Posted by: Dollie Location: Maryville on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:26 PM

It is the players...not the coach. And it is a mistake on UT. Fulmer is a devoted coach and nonreplaceable. Thoughts and prayers are w/ the Fulmer family and the team. Most of all w/ UT. Love you Fulmer and you will be in our heart. The Cox Family

Posted by: k.t Location: knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:24 PM
Should Pat Summit be worried, she is starting all over with new assistants and a young team. What happens if she fails to get to another championship in three years,do you get rid of another loyal legend like Phil Fulmer.

Posted by: Ron Location: Oak Ridge on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:23 PM
I have been a Tennessee football fan since I was 9 years old and have always supported them through thick and thin. The greatest moment for me was the National Championship. Coach Fulmer has done many good things during his tenure, but the last three or four years have shown a decline in the program. Could it be this decline has prevented him and his staff from recruiting the best talent? The timing of this move seems wrong for the players especially, as well as the fans. What’s done is done and I hope the University will find a quality replacement as soon as possible. I will offer my two cents for the future coaching candidate and that would be Boise State’s Chris Peterson.

Posted by: troy Location: lafollettte on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:21 PM
fulmer was a great coach but a coach is only as good as his players i dont think all the coaches put together in the poll could have done any better than coach fulmer did this year with what and who he had god bless coach fulmer and his family and thanks coach for all you gave to the great football program at tennessee you will be greatly missed by the true big orange fans

Posted by: Charlie Location: Athens on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:21 PM
Maybe John Adams will take this job. He is so knowledgable on football and I'm sure he must have been an outstanding player during his college days. If he will not take the job, we might offer it to Paterno of Penn State. He is having an outstanding season for such a young man.

Posted by: Renee Cox Location: Maryville on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:20 PM
This was not a good decision. You have a man that has devoted his life to the Vols. We lost alot of good players last year and it is only realistic that we are having a rocky season. I am so disappointed in UT. I am heart broke for the team and Fulmer. HE WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN OR REPLACED.

Posted by: BryanRussellROCKYTOP Location: Seymour on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:20 PM
I bleed ORANGE and Im sad at the state of our football program. Fulmer has taken us to Championship heights but there comes a time when it's time to call it quit's and now is the time for Coach Fulmer. Most fans love Fulmer personally and asking UT for a change has nothing to do with Fulmer personally. I wish him all the best in whatever he does and he will always be a TRUE VOL and a NATIONAL CHAMPION in my eyes! God Bless you Coach Fulmer

I think the athletic director should step down. After all the buck stops at the top. HIS REPLACEMENT -- MR. PHIL FULMER

Posted by: Jane Location: TN on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:15 PM
I think Fulmer may very well be leaving prematurely. I hate to see it happen. On the other hand, to even bring up the name Spurrier would be like a slap in the face to Vol Fans. He has never had a good thing to say about Tn. Vols. To even consider Spurrier would be a Mockery to the Vols.

Posted by: Sonya Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:15 PM
The comment was made on the Mark Packer show at 4:30 "I would really like to know who made this decision" Well when you have a well known local oil company that threatens to pull his 51 percent of a years total donations to U.T. Look no farther. If I had been Coach Fulmer I would not have bowed to that kind of threat. But hes a better man than most, and I wish him the best and say THANK YOU COACH.

Posted by: Matt Location: Bristol, Tennessee on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:13 PM
You people that say you are going to party over the firing of someone ought to be ashamed. You have no clue how difficult it is to do the job , but you sure think you are an "expert". I would like to go to your job and critique you. I have no idea how to do your job, so I keep my mouth shut. Which is what you need to do. Fulmer is first and foremost a class person, who deserves our respect right now, for the level that he brought Tennessee football. If you can sit down and even draw up Guard Trap, Cover 2 Robber,Linebacker Keys and Reads to Dallas Formation, Denver Formation (Two Tights, Two Flankers, One Back), then I will have respect for what you say, until then you have no credibility, and you are a person that really has problems, and needs to look in the mirror at your own shortcomings before you celebrate when someone loses their job. He is a person, with a family, and feelings, and has given his all fo the Vols. Critics-think before you talk and hurt. Thanks Coach Fulmer

Posted by: Betty Location: Newcomb TN on Nov 3, 2008 at 07:11 PM
I think they are making a BIG MISTAKE letting him go!!! No one can stay on top all the time and if the rest of the Staff and team are not doing what they need to be doing then it's always the coach that catches the heat for it.I think he should stay, they a making a huge mistake, NEWCOMB TN. Loves Ya Coach Fulmer!!!!

Thanks, Johnny... you "mumbled" through the interview probably, as always, you were so drunk you could barely stand up! You've been mad at Fulmer since he got your job, huh? If you could have "stayed off the bottle" long enough, you could still be there. Go away bad dream, you're nothing but a miserable old fanatical drunk!

Posted by: Lisa Location: Morristown on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:58 PM
To much that is given much is expected. Unfortunately in todays society we have a "win at all cost" mentality. Phil Fulmer is a class act but his time at TN has ran its course. We wish him only the best.

Posted by: Not a Johnny Majors Fan Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:58 PM
The interview with Johnny Majors was a bust! He had nothing good to say about Fulmer; didn't even wish him well! Who really cares? Majors is nothing but a "mumbling" old drunk that was replaced by Fulmer. Well, good luck to you, Johnny!

Darrell from Straw plains - I could agree with you more!! The perfect senero now is for every player to walk off, for every promised player - to walk away. Lets protest this IDIOT - mike hamilton - and let him know that this is not okay! WE WANT FULMER TO STAY!!! Don't buy UT stuff, don't attend the games or order them. Let's see how much UT hurts without Fulmer...No players, no fans, no nothing - what will Mikey do then...?

Posted by: brad Location: knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:53 PM
i think it is sad people actually blame the offensive cord. when anyone who has watched tenn. for years can see that this was fulmer's offense. the same stuff they ran when they made sander sthe scapegoat. hard to feel sorry for a guy that is going to make $125,000 a month for 48 months

Posted by: Anybody but Spurrier! Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:53 PM
For those of you that even consider Steve Spurrier to be the coach at UT... What are you? Stupid! This is the idiot that has always talked down UT. Remember his remarks about the Citrus Bowl? Fulmer will be hard to replace... maybe John Gruden (Tampa Bay). He's a fiery coach, and he lives in Knoxville!

So do you think they will retire his sweater vest?

Posted by: UTK1990 Location: UT Campus on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:49 PM
It's finally here and I gald to see him go!!! It was the right decision. It was way to obvious with all the changes in assistant coaches that Phil needed to go!! I know I'm going to celebrate tonight and on November 29th............... the only real sad thing is they let David cutcliffe go to Duke. Fulmer should have been fired then. It party time at Tennessee!!!!!!!!!!

The same coach the fans and university staff pushed out today is the same coach that won this state a national championship and also the same one that has helped to build quality young men year after year. Is it all about wins and loses? Were we really a Tennessee family today?

Posted by: Larry Location: Lenoir City on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:48 PM
It's all about big business, it's not about being a Vol or an education, strictly greed. We've got our priorities screwed up. It's about making a positive difference in the lives of young people. We live in a throw away society, marriage, family, friendship, don't want it anymore, throw it out. Another opportunity to raise tution. Watch out Pat, big brother Mike is watching with his check list. Raw deal for Coach Fulmer.

Posted by: Brittany Location: Jacksboro on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:46 PM
I feel like I have just lost a family member. Coach Fulmer has been the coach since before I really got into UT football. He is an amazing coach and has a record for one of the top 5 coaches with the most wins in the SEC. Mike Hamilton does not know what he has gotten himself into with this big stunt. I hope he is happy. When he says "PHILLIP SHOULD BE TREATED WITH RESPECT." is he including himself in that statement? Or is his definition of RESPECT different from mine? Because Last time I checked, BEING THE AD AND DRIVING YOUR HEAD COACH TO RESIGNING was not a very good example of respect. I think everyone agrees with me when I say PHIL SHOULD STAY....MIKE SHOULD GO.....Phil, we are going to miss you, your great coaching can never be amounted up to. They will be regretting this next year.

Posted by: kristy Location: maryville on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:41 PM
the best thing they have done was pulling Crompton out and putting Stephens in. we could use a new offensive coodinator as well. fulmer is a great coach. best wishes to him and the players.

Tennessee traditions: 1. Running through the "T" brought here by a Florida grad. 2. "Rocky Top" played by the Auburn University Marching band as an insult to Tennessee fans. 3. The Game Maxims were taken from Notre Dame and adopted by Robert Neyland. 4. The only original tradition at Tennessee is listening to people who say they are fans of the program that really aren't and firing great coaches which does nothing but turn true Tennessee fans against the program. I have been a fan for 30 years, but this finally has done it for me. Its time for me to turn the TV and radio off. I will not wear another UT shirt, hat, or anything else. Mike count me out as a supporter or donor.

Posted by: Ben Location: Oak Ridge on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:38 PM
Coach Fulmer began as head coach under circumstances lacking loyalty by the sacrifice of a legendary UT football family. He did not have to build a program as he took over a winner from the get-go, one that had to be raised from ashes 16 seasons prior. Still, I am sad for any person who closes a career at UT under unhappy conditions.

Posted by: Curtis Layman Location: Dandridge TN on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:38 PM
As a fan I appreciate Philip Fulmer's tenure & for what he's done for UT. But also as a fan, I have seen the program slip over the past few years. Bieng a long term fan of Tennessee sports, I'd like to see the football program rise back to the top. I would like to see a coach with an NFL background to replace Fulmer. For example, Lane Kiffin, Mike Nolan or Bill Cowher. Fulmer will be missed by fans and players alike.

Posted by: SAMMY Location: KNOXVILLE on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:33 PM
Mike Hamilton and everyone else who wanted fulmer gone should hang your heads in embarrassment. You should tuck your tails and hide. BEG HIM TO COME BACK BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE - YOU IDIOT!!!

Posted by: Al Munsey Location: LaFollette, TN on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:31 PM
On 1 hand I have alot of respect for Coach Fulmer, he has done alot of great things at UT. On the 2nd hand I beleive it's time to rebuild starting with the coaching staff, the game has pasted Fulmer up, he is still coaching with a 90's style of coaching, and we all know that the college football game style has changed, maybe bringing Steve Spurrier back home to east TN may get his game back on top. You can get 2 in 1 with Spurrier, a head coach and an offensive master mind. My last thought is what would have this season been like if Cutcliff had stayed as offensive coordinator? Maybe we would be 6-3 instead of 3-6, which would have been better but still not good enough.

Posted by: Tommy Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:31 PM
I liked Phil Fulmer, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out you can't just run the ball down everyone's throat. Especially when everyone, including the defense knows what you are going to do. I would like to see Hamilton go after Lane Tiffin. Great offensive mind.

Posted by: Darrell Location: Cleveland, TN on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:30 PM
I am sorry to see Coach Fulmer go. I honestly think this is a decision the University of Tennessee faithful will regret. Thanks Coach for your faithfullness to this university, and the love and dedication you have given us all. I met you in a resturant in Pigion Forge 15 years ago and you took the time to speak to me and my young daughters... Time I'm certain you didn't have. You are the perfect example of a "CLASS ACT" and I appreciate what you have meant to us as fans, and the players who have come to you as boys, and left as men. I know how much you want to win, but I appreciate most that you have considered your duties as caretaker of these young lives MOST important. Neither decision of whether you should stay or leave would please everyone, and I'm certain that you will leave here bitter at the university where you have given so much. I know you will always be beloved, and you WILL be the standard against which all future coaches are measured. Thanks again Coach.

If letting go of the BEST thing that has ever happened to Tennessee football is what we are about - then I am ashamed to be considered a Tennessee fan. We are not the fans I thought we were. Philip Fulmer has been nothing but loyal to us and our program - repaying the favor would have been nice!

Posted by: Charles Location: Cosby on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:27 PM
I knew this was coming and in a way felt like it needed to be done. Once, I saw him in that press conference I knew that this was wrong decision. The passion that man has for this program will NEVER be duplicated!!! It is a sad day. I know that somehow Coach Fulmer will find peace with this decision. He loves UT football too much not to. Tennessee will be successful again, but they better never forget what Coach Fulmer has done for this University. Good Luck Coach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't care who Mike Hamilton hires I will not ever support UT football again. The fans ($) have spoke and the best coach in college football was just tossed to the trash. Maybe you UT fans can get a real coach now- maybe one that can break rules lose scholarships and rack-up years of NCAA suspensions and one winning season. Phillip Fulmer did it the right way for 17 years. I hope that UT never wins another game. I hope that the players walk-out and leave UT and the fans with nothing. I have always been a UT fan- but no more. This is wrong! I despise UT now. I feel for the players but I will never support UT ever again!

I think this shows, yet again, how foolish many UT fans are. Anyone who would embrace Coach Pearl and oust Coach Fulmer is, well, an idiot! Everything runs in a cycle. It is called building a team. Perhaps you people could have rallied behind the Vols when they were struggling instead of whining because they were losing. You cannot have a championship every single year. This town has the most "fair weather fans" I have ever seen. Having come from NC where people rally behind Carolina, State, Duke, Wake - regardless of their record shows what real fans are about in college atheletics. Fulmer made a few bad hiring decisions, it happens. He is a good man and has given a great deal to this University. Wake up people!

Posted by: Doug Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:18 PM
People yammered for a new offensive philosopy, so Fulmer hired Clawson from outside the UT Program. His offense is complicated and difficult to learn. The same people who wanted an offense like Clawsons are the same that now want Fulmer gone. Cant have your cake and eat it too, not even in the great vol nation. Shame on UT.

Posted by: paul Location: oak ridge, tn. on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:17 PM
im sure coach fulmer is a great man and cares deeply for the program , but so do we as fans . fans like me who bleed orange and a win or lose sometimes makes my week. i never have thought we should win every game , but i do think we should be able to compete. and since 2000 we have not been . last year was a year we should of had 8 losses. we were lucky! thank you coach for the ride but now we need a new driver.

Posted by: Marie Location: Lenoir City on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:16 PM
A head coach can only do so much, ultimately it is the players decision on the field that decide the game. The coach can is not on the field to make the decisions for them. I believe if we found players that could get the job done, then the stats would be better. I believe that this decision was made to quickly without thinking about the consequences, Mike Hamilton needs to go!! I have been a UT fan since I could talk, but I would boycott football if Steve Spurrier was named head coach. If Fulmer is not asked back, I vote Peyton Manning as head coach!

Posted by: C Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:16 PM
I think you should look to the money people, the almighty big money contributors, for making the decision that Fulmer should go. When it comes down to it, they have the last word, money talks. All our best to Phillip Fulmer and his family.

Mike Hamilton-you have screwed up again. I love Bruce Pearl, but you screwed Buzz Peterson, Randy Sanders, and now poor Fulmer. HE IS TENNESSEE FOOTBALL. You won't find anyone as genuine as him. Tennessee fans need to rally for Philip Fulmer, not run him out of here like a bunch of vigilanties. We DON'T turn our backs on our own family! Philip Fulmer is one of the BEST things that ever happened to Tennesse and we should be forever greatful. Instead of running Fulmer off, I think we should run Mike Hamilton off. A true fan understands the up's and down's that come as seasons pass. There is no need to attack the coaches or the players. It is a game. It is not about winning, but about how you play. That's what were always taught growing up! My prayers are with the Fulmer family. Your hearts are not the only ones broken!!!

Posted by: Brad Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:16 PM
good luck to coach fulmer in the future and thanks for past 17 years. funny how all the local media is finds is players that will defend him no matter what. Fan apathy is what got fulmer and even today he had a tone at times that makes it hard to feel to sorry for him. This is the Univ. of Tenn. not the Univ. of Fulmer.

Posted by: James Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:15 PM
I don't just blame Philip Fulmer but the players also, if they would have played harder and went into the games with more enthusiasm maybe just maybe we wouldn't be in this situation now....

I think this is the biggest loss UT will suffer all year long. And as far as wanting callahan as a husker fan I say that you can have the loser. If you are not happy with fulmer you will definately hate callahan.

Posted by: Devin Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:13 PM
Very distasteful way to let Fulmer go. He deserved more than to be let go midseason. Clausen should have been the first to go, he ruined what Cutcliff built last year. Good luck Phil!

Posted by: Loretta Location: Maryville on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:13 PM
I agree with the players that this situation is all about money. Maybe we should go back to a 30,000-seat stadium and have pride in our coaches and players. Donors with big bucks shouldn't have any influence on who coaches at UT.

This is a sad day for Tennessee. Phillip Fulmer is Tennessee Football and I feel the university will soon realize this when they are hard pressed to find a coach with as much loyalty, heart and dedication as Coach Fulmer. The "fans" who feel this resignation is a good thing will realize this also. True Tennessee fans are not "fair weather" fans and know what a great positive Fulmer has been for Tennessee Football. We should have been as loyal to Fulmer as he has been to Tennessee. Things would have turned around.

I believe that they are making a mistake,And should not make him step down as the head coach of UT.They better use there heads before he goes somewhere else and then comes back to Knoxville and really puts it to us.But thanks for the memoires coach Fulmer

Posted by: Mr. Maryville Location: Maryville on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:58 PM
I think the players and former players are right in rejecting this decision. The person who should step down is Mike Hamilton. He's a disgrace to our university. He doesn't even want students at the games, unless they can pay the right price. That's selfish. He's now trying to take away everything that made UT football what it was and still is today. Resign, Hamilton!!!

Posted by: Shawn Location: Alcoa on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:58 PM
You know if coach fulmer has to go and he should not go but if he does go our new coach should be eather chavis or payton manning, you know manning's contract is up this year at Ind, colt's.

Posted by: Don Location: Nashville on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:56 PM
I can't imagine what was going through the administrations' heads...you won't find a better man. He's been in my home and recruited my son to play for him. Never would I have ever imagined them doing this to him. I couldn't have imagined this being handled any worse. I hope they get what they deserve...

Posted by: Fred Location: Oak Ridge on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:55 PM
Is this a sign of the times? The firing of Phil Fulmer at this time in the year is the most class-less act I can remember in UT history. Only the replacement with Steve Spurrier would top thison the stink meter!

Posted by: bobo Location: maryville on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:54 PM
Phillip fulmur has done horrible in the last couple of years. i am sad to see him go, but i am glad for a bit of change. i say bring on Spurrier!

Posted by: Matt Location: Knox on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:54 PM
Fulmer has had 2 losing seasons in 16 years. Fulmer consistently brings in one top ten recruiting class after the next. There are not many programs that can say that. I guess the Fulmer haters also forgot that we were in the SEC championship game just last season where we almost beat the eventual national champion, LSU? Even from a business perspective this is dumb. How is giving someone a raise and contract extension and then buying them out for 6 million several months later a good business decision? After almost 20 years of great coaching Fulmer deserves a chance to turn the team around. Sure if he actually has several bad seasons in a row THEN we can get rid of him but it seems like Fulmer has been on the hot seat since the second loss of the season. That is just ridiculous. As a current UT student and lifelong Tennessee fan I am disgusted with my university.

Posted by: Shirley Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:54 PM
I think there should be a firing but not Fulmer, should be Mike Hamilton & DAVID Clawson He needs to coach where the people will appreciate him. They did a terrible thing to him & his family.

Posted by: lynne Location: alcoa on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:52 PM
Phil lost a job he loved and had been successful at. Many people lose jobs they enjoy and do not expect to lose. Most however, are not set financially for life. Many also have to figure how they are going to provide for their families and keep their homes. Fortunately for him this should not be a worry. As one former Vol coach once said, "There is more to life than UT Football".

Posted by: Martin Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:51 PM
As always, Coach Fulmer is a class act. This situation could have, should have been handled differently and a lot better. The way Hanilton et al handled this defies dexcription and shows a definite lack of class. The second winningest coach, behind General Neyland, gets treated this way? Not to mention the MAN that he is. I am virtually ashamed to be a UT Vol fan right now.

Posted by: Bob Location: Clinton on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:51 PM
So if Mike Hamilton makes a bad hire, he should be gone - we can't accept that sort of trend...

Posted by: Wendy Location: West Knox on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:51 PM
I have been a UT fan since I was a small child and have never been been disapppointed in the University until today. Fire Mike Hamilton!!! Phil- where ever you go, you have my support. Don't accept any position that Hamilton give you...you deserve better. Any team in the NCAA will be lucky to have you as their head coach. I have been honored to watch you coach. THANK YOU!!!!

It's been a great Ride! Coach Fulmer...It is sad that all good things must come to an end...Tailgating isn't what it use to be, Big Orange Football just doesn't seem the same, Coach, you don't even seem the same. You have got to be getting tired of all the BS, you have had to put up with over the years. It is very sad, 'the way of the New and Modern SEC Football'. Here is one to think about...For UT Fans, 'Winning the 98 Championship was the WORST thing that could have happened to us? My opinion, since then, it's been all about the money! TV has taken over the Game. Where did the fun go? It's just not about the Coaching, it runs deeper than that. Good Luck Coach Fulmer and thank you for the memories!

Posted by: Misty Location: Clinton, TN on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:50 PM
You know, I have never really followed the football team but as far as I can remember, Phillip Fulmer has been the glue that held the team together. If you think you have a losing team now, just wait until he leaves. UT-you are making a HUGE mistake. These players are young and they need time to evolve into something spectacular--time that no one has given them. Ridiculous!!! Maybe Mike Hamilton should resign since he helped make the decision to hire Fulmer all those years ago....hmmmm--what a thought!

Posted by: Shawn Location: Alcoa on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:50 PM
Coach fulmer is not the problem in our program, the problem is clawson just ask any fan that you come across, 95 out of every 100 fans will tell clawson, trust me I have already done my research on it,Watch what happens next, you will see just how much fulmer has made a diffrence for us all dont be suprized if our fans dont go on strike because of this till we get him back.you can't replace fulmer he's one of a kind.

Posted by: Fred Location: rogersville tn on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:50 PM
I think it's bad buisness when big money overtakes school pride. Fulmer deserves ONE MORE YEAR!!

Posted by: Lois Location: Combs on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:49 PM
I just moved here from Virginia a year ago,so the way I see it they should give him one more year to try to show them that he can make things right. If they let the choches go for not winning enough games all of the collages would be coach less.

Posted by: Derrick Location: Morristown, TN on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:49 PM
I really am sad to see fulmer but, I think his biggest downfall was his discipline decisions on the players hes kicked key players off the team for the past few years like Coker,James Banks, Schaefer our kicker didnt come back until the S. carolina game. The list goes on and on of players kicked off and, with the competition being as good as it is in the SEC you just cant do that. Kids will be kids and they will make mistakes.I dont know what they all did but it seems fulmer has been harsh.

Posted by: Amy Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:49 PM
Phil Fulmer IS Tennessee football. It says alot about what our society has become when money, winning, and being the best is more important than good values, support for people when things aren't going well, and standing for things that are RIGHT. I am dissapointed in the fans of Tennessee and the administration who made this decision.

Posted by: kingarthur Location: morristown, tn on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:48 PM
MORE PEOPLE IN TENN. AND MANY PARTS OF THE COUNTRY CAN'T TELL YOU WHO THE GOVERNOR OF TENN. IS BUT THEY KNOW WHO PHILLIP FULMER IS. DO YOU HONESTLY THINK THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED TO PAPA JOE AT PINN STATE OR BOBBY BOWDEN AT FLORIDA STATE? THOSE PLACES KNOW AND RESPECT THE CALIBUR OF COACHES THEY HAVE AND UNDERSTAND THAT EVERY YEAR IS NOT GOING TO BE A CHAMPIONSHIP YEAR BUT THEY KNOW WHAT KIND OF AMBASSADOR FOR THEIR SCHOOLS THEY HAVE IN THEIR COACHES. PHIL FULMER IS THAT KIND OF AMBASSADOR, AND WE HAVE JUST LET HIM GO!

Posted by: June Location: Harrogate on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:48 PM
Coach Fulmer has allowed himself to become slow and out of shape, I'd hate to see him have to run the field, in doing so he has made his players slow and sluggish also, he should have stepped down 100 pounds ago

Posted by: chris stokes Location: knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:47 PM
i'm from indiana and b-ball in indiana is as big as football in east tennessee.this reminds me of the hoosiers 1985-86 season were they were below .500 winning pct. and everyone wanted bobby knight fired.there was even a book written by john feinstein called "a season on the brink" about there dismal season. in 1987 indiana"with bobby knight" won the national championship. what im saying is you don't give up on a great coach and you surly don't fire them for one bad season.this was wrong and i hope someone is accountable for this terrible decision.

Posted by: David Christopher Location: Oak Ridge on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:47 PM
Wow, I have been to a few of the games this year and began to feel as though Fulmer's conservative coaching stance has been his weak point. After watching all that is going on in the news and to hear the emotion in his voice and reaction of love from his players I vote now to give him another year to make a change. We will love our vols no matter win or lose! This event today could be a wake up call for Fulmer and staff and players. Oh Yeah, We will go to the games to see our BIG ORANGE PLAY! I vote the next coach should be Phil Fulmer!

Posted by: Reba Location: Universtity of Tennessee, Humes Hall on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:46 PM
I support Phil as a man, I have pitures with him as a little kid and I am thankful for all he's put into UT football and players. I love Phil but maybe its time for a change. The 90's era is over and the 2000 era has no comparison. It will take some time but I think eventually this decision will be beneficial for the Vols. Goodbye Phil, Go vols! -Bekah P.S. what about Mike Leach?

Posted by: mike c. Location: etowah on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:45 PM
have mixed emotions about the decision. think phillip fulmer bleeds orange as much if not more than any player or fan out there. think it is very bad timing. better be a VERY BIG NAME involved to justify such a decision, not a fly by night coach at a school such as texas tech , boise st, ETC., real BIG, such as mack brown, bill cowher, john gruden, Etc.wish phillip and his family nothing but the best and thanks for the memories!! GO VOLS!!

Posted by: thrill Location: oneida on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:45 PM
ok were in a bad season so what!!! did penn stat dump joe pa or did florida state dump bobby bowden? the worked through the bad years do you realize that fulmer is in the company of joe pa and bowden as the winningest head coach. so this man give 30 years to tenn. and then they dump him .how stupid are they you dont bleed true orange unless you go through the good and the bad good luck fulmer were ever you go!!!!! and also if steve spurrier is hired i will never watch ut football again and it will be hard GO VOLS!!!!!!!

Posted by: Pyro Location: knox on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:45 PM
Well I do believe that it is time for change. If the players would have played harder and if Philip Fulmer would have kept his head straight we would not have been in the is situation. All of those little mistakes have added up and know look what has happened.

Posted by: Nicole Location: Oak Ridge on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:45 PM
This is a sad day for UT. Whether you agree with the decision or not one thing can be said for certain and that is Mr. Fulmer deserves nothing but respect and admirations for all that he has done for this program over the decades. Regardless of what has happened this season, he is a proven coach who deserves recognition for all he has done. This program will move on and next season will come without him, but he will forever be in the soul of Neyland Stadium.

Posted by: Chad Location: knoxville,Tn on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:44 PM
I think its a sad day n knoxville,I'm 27yrs old and 4 the most part of my life Fulmer was an always will b UT football,I would have loved 2 see him stick around and beat Neyland's winning streak I think he only liked like 24 games.I think mike Hamalton should have been a man and step up and ammited when he made a mistake, and fired Clausen offense is clearly the problem and his new skeem hasn't work.I think they handled the situation poorly and I fill 4 Fulmer and his Family.I think they should've got rid of Dave Clausen and gave Fulmer another chance.Anyone who Questioned how much this university meant 2 Fulmer and how much he loves the University of Tennessee knows now after this press Conference!I'll end by saying at least 4 me its a sad day in Knoxville,Love ya Fulmer, and U better bet I'll be at Neyland Stadium on Nov 29th 2 see U run through the T for the last time!!.....GO VOLS!!!!

Posted by: Tracy Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:44 PM
We should be more about tradition instead of making wins the most important thing. Phillip Fulmer is part of our tradition. TN can't mean as much to any other coach. This is a BAD decision!!!!

Good Luck Coach Fulmer THANKS for all you have done for Volunteer Football and May God Bless you and your family. And GO VOLS

Thanks Phil its been a great run and most of the comments are from people who dont know you like I do. Keep your head up and be proud you are Tennesse football.

Posted by: Danielle Location: Sevierville on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:44 PM
Coach Fulmer hasn't been getting the respect he deserves. Just because we are having a bad season, its not just his fault. But since he is stepping down, in my opinion, the most logical choice for coach would be Bill Cowher. He won a Super Bowl, and he is experienced. If he becomes coach, we will have a great chance to make it to a major bowl game, or even a national championship game. It's sad to see coach gone, but it does give us a great chance to improve and become a national championship team. Coach Fulmer will be missed.

Posted by: steven Location: knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:43 PM
tenn really knows how to mess up. First majors, now fulmer! The fans are so narrow minded. Fulmer deserves better. Look at Joe P. and penn state and Bowden at fsu. Several bad season have come and gone but they are still producing. Tennessee should be ashamed of themselves.

Posted by: norma Location: maryville on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:42 PM
think instead of coach fulmer stepping down it should have been hamilton ,if he had a brain he would have gave himm another year i agree with the panel with matt packer that who ever thought this up made a big mistake i hope that they have sleepless nights over the wrong that they did.

Posted by: Joe Pence Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:42 PM
it was too soon, should had been at the end of the season. your poll....we don't need spurrier at UT!!!!

Posted by: Buddy Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:41 PM
Mike Hamiliton is the bigest joke coming out of Knoxville in years. He has been licking his lips at the possibility of being able to replace coach Fulmer for years. He should be replaced first.

Posted by: Miranda Location: Newport, TN on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:39 PM
Fulmer should have been given a great deal of respect for the time and energy he has invested into the football program. The way Mike Hamilton has handled this is disgusting. You dont force a man like Fulmer to resign without the season being over. Mike Hamilton should be fired and if Fulmer is to stay on at UT, he should be the Athletics Director. This has been handled absolutely shameful.

Posted by: Steve DeBlois Location: Pigeon Forge TN on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:38 PM
RE: Coach Fulmer: UT should have let him stay. We have a young team this season.....will they consider changing their mind?

Posted by: michael Location: dandridge on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:38 PM
Coach fulmer is a great coach and in my opinion one of the best in the country. You have a new offensive coordinator and a quarterback transition what did you expect but for them to let him go is completely ridicules. Im sorry but there is no way i can cheer for the university of tennessee without coach fulmer on the sideline.

3 seasons ago a losing record, a average season and a good season, now a disaster with no evidence of the team being better next year. this had to be done. fuad reveiz and reggie coleman need to get over it.

Kathy from Blaine - I love your suggestion, perfect in fact. PHIL FULMER FOR ATHLETIC DIRECTOR!!

he doesn't have to answer their questions. you could tell his heart was breaking. how awful. his overall record speaks for itself. i wouldn't work for them in the background...if they didn't want me upfront.

As a UT alum I have always been very proud of my school--until now. I'm very ashamed that this has been done to coach Fulmer. I'm through with UT football.

Coach Fulmer for AD!

Posted by: PATRICIA SHARP Location: KNOXVILLE on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:24 PM
I FEEL THAT FULMER'S DEPARTURE IS PREMATURE. HE HAS GIVEN YEARS OF HIS LIFE AS A PLAYER AND COACH TO UT AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN ANOTHER YEAR TO TURN THE PROGRAM AROUND. UNIVERSITIES ARE ONLY LOYAL TO THE DOLLAR AND IT IS SICKENING.I JUST HOPE HE KNOWS THAT THERE ARE PLENTY OF PEOPLE HERE WHO STILL WANTED HIM AS HEAD COACH AND WE WISH HIS FAMILY WELL.I HAVE HELD BACK ANGRY TEARS AT EVERY LOSS THIS SEASON BUT NO TEAM CAN BE PERFECT OR BE A WINNER EVERY YEAR-IT HAS BEEN A FRUSTRATING SEASON FOR ALL. COACH FULMER HAS HAD AN OVERALL RECORD TO BE PROUD OF AND I JUST FEEL IT WAS BAD TIMING AND WONDER HOW THE PLAYERS FEEL-THE PAST AND PRESENT ONES BUT ESPECIALLY THOSE RECRUITS WHO HAVE COMMITTED TO UT BECAUSE OF HIM.I HAVE JUST WATCHED THE FULMER PRESS CONFERENCE AND SAW HOW HEARTBROKEN HE IS.IF WE ARE IN A WORSE PLACE NEXT YEAR, MAYBE MIKE HAMILTON SHOULD TENDER HIS RESIGNATION FOR HIS FOOLISH DECISION.I WONDER IF HE UNDERSTANDS THE MEANING OF LOYALTY-APPARENTLY NOT.GOOD LUCK,COACH FULMER.

Posted by: corland Location: memphis on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:24 PM
Some of you are crazy to want Fulmer gone. Fulmer is TN Football!!!! The only coaches that can come in and "replace" Fulmer is Cutcliff and the ole' ball coach. I don't think Spurrier will come and Cutcliff and Fulmer are close. Sad, sad day for TN football.

Posted by: sandra Location: knox on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:22 PM
I think they did a terrible thing to a wonderful coach. this team just can not play football!!! coach FULMER has done a great job. shame on YOU!!!!! THE TEAM WILL REALLY GO DOWNHILL NONE. He will be missed. I think you guys will be SORRY!!!!

Posted by: Anne Location: Alcoa, TN on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:20 PM
UT has made a horrible mistake if they think they will ever find a more dedicated coach, hope Mike Hamilton is the next to go.

Posted by: Jannie Location: Rockwood, Tn on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:19 PM
I think they made the wrong decision I can,t believe this just because he has had some bad luck. This is his life and what about the players on his team what are they thinking. It IS WRONG.

Posted by: Jane Location: Tazewell on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:18 PM
I think that Fulmer has been a great coach the past 17 years. Sure he had a bad season but who doesn't. I think that if given the chance he could have turned things around. They should have kept him and I think they will regret it. I wish Fulmer the best.

Posted by: Beth Location: Corryton on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:18 PM
What an atrosity...UT is sending out a very BAD message to youth all across the nation. When a relationship (of any kind) is not going your way, just kick it to the curb and get a new one going. This goes a lot deeper than football and I am appalled by this. The money that will be spent due to the "lack of instant gratification in the wins" should be going into the university funds academically instead of trying to keep a population of ungreatful fans with short term memory loss happy. Our priorities are out of order when a touchdown means more than a diploma.

It's sad that not going to a BCS game since 2001 or having a winning season in 2008 has come to this. Honestly, the high expectations that we as Tennessee fans have come from PHILLIP FULMER. Phillip Fulmer is Tennessee football- hate it or love it...

Coach Fulmer FOR ATHELETIC DIRECTOR

Posted by: Robin Location: Lenoir City TN on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:02 PM
I have been a Vols fan all my life. I just think it is terrible the way Fulmer is getting treated. Football shouldn't be everything. I do know one thing if Steve Spurrier gets the job I will never go to another game or be a Vols fan. This just breaks my heart.

Posted by: sdg Location: Loudon on Nov 3, 2008 at 05:00 PM
I admit I hate losing. However, I wish we would have given him 1 more year with the new offense. I think he tried to do too much too fast. These players had to learn about 40 formations. They should have simplified it in the beginning then gradually incorporated the rest. Not many coaches have had the success that Fulmer has had. I wish things could have been different. But you can't please everybody. I honestly think he had as many supporters as he had critics. The critics spoke up. The supporters didn't and the squeaky wheel gets the grease. BEST OF LUCK PHIL! You have done great things for our program. We will never forget you. p.s. We lost a great coach in Trooper Taylor also. Maybe he would have a difference.

Posted by: Mark Location: Sevierville on Nov 3, 2008 at 04:59 PM
I think that is a mistake that they let Fulmer go The next coach will take a few years to get it together and Fulmer is having a bad season but all the great coaches have a few bad ones 17 years is out the door He will find a great coaching job and Tennessee will regret what they did

Lucky for Mike Hamilton when he has a bad stretch at work he isn't forced to step down. You can't tell me everyone has a rough patch at work. In times like this, this is a horrible way to show appreciation fr all the wins, titles, championships, etc. We love you Phil!

I think Coach Fulmer has done a great job a UT Evetyone loved him when he was winning but when the team had a bad season they were ready to boot him out you will be sadly missed I hope that you will go to another team and make them champions like you did at UT

Posted by: Karen M. Jenkins Location: Maryville, Tn. on Nov 3, 2008 at 04:44 PM
Mike Hamilton sold our orange seats for black and placed more black sportswear than orange in our bookstores. Now he has blackened the hearts of thousands- he has thrown away one of the best coaches in the history of the game. I guess they didn't teach Mike that loyalty counts more than ESPN's BIG BUCKS at Clemson? Pricipals and students, alike, should be thankful for the opportnity to wear UT Orange and to have a Phil Fulmer in their midst. Anyone with intelligence knows no team wins big every year. Phil gets my vote for Tn. Athletic Director. If Tennessee needs a change, that seems like the place to start. Mike Hamilton is no Volunteer, nor are others who only live to WIN!

Posted by: Herb Location: Newport on Nov 3, 2008 at 04:41 PM
I have watched the Vols over Fulmer's time there. I wish I had kept a record of how many passes he dropped, how many fumbles he had, how many missed tackles he made, being out of position on special teams and allowing kick-off or punt returns, how many interception he threw, how many funbles inside the 5 yard line that caused Tennessee to lose a game? About as many as Bill Battle did back in the 70's. No team is going to be #1 year in and year out. This was just one of those years that it didn't matter who was coaching wasn't going to win. The O Line allowed 4 sacks last year and showed up this year thing that was all they had to do and people would run from them. When an O Line cannot open up a hole and hold the block long enough to pick up 6 inches they need to be benched, no ands, ifs or butts about it. As the saying in Tennessee goes, Alumni Money Talks and The Coach Walks. Coach Pearl don't have a bad season!!

maybe they should have followed auburn and tryed getting rid of randy sanders i mean dave clawsen first seeing as how well his offense did in the sec. Hiring him was like hiring a great high school coach. maybe we should have hired maryvilles head coach.

Posted by: Erik Location: Indianapolis IN on Nov 3, 2008 at 04:35 PM
I think that UT deserves what it gets here. They have an Athletic Director that does not have a clue what he is doing. The programs across the board at UT have gotten worse and worse. Ticket prices have gone up and the entire stadium renovation project keeps reducing the seating for those of us who are not millionaires so we can cater to a few fat cats. I am ashamed of UT and ashamed of the AD department. UT did this same thing to Coach Majors. Par for the course for UT. I hope UT loses every game next year. Then we will deal with the AD next year.

Posted by: Ken Location: VOL CITY on Nov 3, 2008 at 04:28 PM
Very sad day. I hope that Coach Fulmer knows how much most of the fans appreciate him for what he has done on and off the field. He is a great man that will be missed in the future. Also, it will be hard to replace a man of his character. Big shoes to fill.

Posted by: True Vol Fan Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 04:19 PM
Each of you are do quick to criticize the work of a good man...day in and day out those coaches work hard for those boys and those boys work hard for those coaches. next year when they are still losing are you going to call for the new coach's head too...Tennessee Football will never be the same without Fulmer, and remember so called Vol Fans you will reap what you sow.....count on no more winning seasons. You just lost the best thing that happen to Tennessee.

Posted by: Lynn Location: Alcoa, TN on Nov 3, 2008 at 04:19 PM
Get ready for a long few seasons before TN can even compete again. Should have given Fulmer one more year to get things turned around without Clawson (he's the problem).

I think Coach Fulmer has been a wonderful coach and leader for U.T. and the fans.Too bad the some of the fans chose not to back him with the respect he deserved.Seems as if John Majors can tell you a thing or two about that. It's not always possible to win every time, but with good coaches and leaders it makes it some what less painful.

Posted by: linda Location: dandridge on Nov 3, 2008 at 04:01 PM
i think fulmer has been a great coach and in the last few years it has went downhill he needs to move on he doesnt seem to have the drive as he did the assistant coaches need to leave also dont keep same game different name folk but be prepared to have at least another bad year

Posted by: Ken Mckee Location: Maryville on Nov 3, 2008 at 04:01 PM
I quess phil finally know's how it feel's to be booted out. Johnny Majors, a friend of mine won 84% of his last 4 seasons. Including 4 major bcs bowl game victories.Phil, along with board member haslim and d cutcliff went behind his back while johnny was recovering from heart surgery. Carma!! Seriosly thogh, Spurrier is the best fit for tennessee. He emphasizes discipline, and is a great stratigist. Also, he invented the fun and gun offense. Mr Majors, i hope you read this, this is your day, you have class, and your a program builder. Might i add, if not for your supreme coaching, thompson boling wouldn't be. You also got us playing teams like notre dame, and winning. Before majors, we were playing montana state, and virginia school for the deaf blind, and dumb school.

Although born and bred in Tennessee, I've traveled the world for 22 years while in the US Air Force. Regardless of where I was or am or will be, I will always bleed ORANGE. I love UT. This was inevitable. It is bittersweet b/c Coach Fulmer was good. It is time the program, the university, community and fans deserve a winning team again. It is time we start beating Florida, LSU & Bama again. God Speed Coach Fulmer. GO VOLS!

Good riddance.

It's sad to see Fulmer go, The program has come along way under his leadership. I guess a lot of people don't remember the kind of seasons we had before him. It's interesting to see the list of names on the list to replace him; I don't see the former and current NFL coaches coming to this small market town for no less then double what they are paying Sabin, to mention Neuheisel and a disciplined program is somewhat funny... Good luck Coach Fulmer... and Mike Hamilton.

To all that think this is the will of the fan base, YOU ARE WRONG! Reading the committs in this article alone will disspell that notion. The comments are at least 3 to 1 in favor of Coach Fulmer. Saying that, I wish the Coach luck and happyness. I wish the program success, and I pray those that are harsh of the Coach will be able to accept what comes next.

A sad day for Tennessee Football. Coach Fulmer is a good person that cares for the players and the program. But for some reason wasn't getting the job done. Its not about the fans or the media, its all about the money and what a team like Tennessee brings into the school. Maybe Peyton is ready to start his coaching career ?

Posted by: cal Location: sknox on Nov 3, 2008 at 03:04 PM
Very sad day to be a UT fan. I have held my head up all season knowing the fact that every every every team at some point in time has a couple of bad years. But the way the fans have done and now this, now my head hangs down. Good luck in finding a coach that will be willing to come in to this bullpit to coach know what will happen to them if they have a couple of bad years. Thank you Coach Fulmer for the 17 wonderful years. I hope you do not feel that every fan in TN is against you.

Posted by: Red Location: Dandridge on Nov 3, 2008 at 03:04 PM
Coaches that don't get the job done need to be let go. Phil hasn't done a good job over the last few years. The fans have come to settle for just barely competing and not really competing for the national championship. A program with the money and fans behind it like UT deserves better. Look at Phil's record against ranked teams for the last 10 years nad realize he has failed the fans and the school. Move on. Do not let Hammond make the hire! He is the man that has given Phil extensions and raises. The next head coach for UT is not part of Phil's staff either!!

I'm not just sad, I'm mad! If the UT officials are forcing Fulmer out, they don't know what they are doing. Every time our team has a bad year, some so-called fans start screaming "Get rid of the coach" like that is going to make the same bunch of losers play any better. We can't expect to have the best team every year, especially after losing many seniors. I think Fulmer is the best and we have been blessed to have him as 'our coach'. I just became a big Vols fan several years ago. I won't be one any more if Fulmer is forced out. What about the recruiting staff? Don't they share some of the blame? If you take a bunch that can't focus or put their heart into it, no coach can force them to be a winning team. Just as Peyton Manning can't make his team win every game because he is only one man, and though he may throw a perfect pass, he can't make that receiver catch it. Fulmer can coach his heart out, but he's not the one out on the field. Love you, coach. God bless and good luck.

lets get real here,if tennessee had steve spurrier, with the status of tennessee, plus spurriers pull and coaching, tennessee would be a power again.all the big name players would head for tennessee.ut and a great coach like spurrier, how could it get any better.i wouldnt let spurrier get away if i was tennessee, the program would be a power again.

Posted by: sut Location: philadelphia on Nov 3, 2008 at 02:30 PM
Most wonderful news...I don't see why they would have to buy out his contract if he's stepping down. If he got fired maybe but not him quitting. If he got fired thats what they need to call it...His coaches should get the option of further emplyment or bought, but not him...I said when Spurrier came out of the NFL we should of latched onto him. He ain't well liked here but thats just because he was a better coach.

Posted by: lynn Location: newport on Nov 3, 2008 at 02:18 PM
I think there are probably a lot of other reasons why the VOLS have had a not so perfect season that no one knows about. Coach Fulmer is taking the blame, but you have to have a team with spirit too. I don't see much spirit on the field. There are some outstanding players, and some other realy good players, but overall, I just haven't seen the "togetherness" on the field as in past seasons. I hate to see coach Fulmer leave the program, but I am sure he has his reasons whether it is his fault or not. I wish him God speed and all the best. Thanks for an outstanding career as UT head coach.

I SAY LET HIM FINISH HIS CONTRACT..HE HAS BEEN A GRT COACH THERE ARE MANY OTHERS INVOLVED IN THIS TEAM .THE PLAYERS ARE .NOT THAT GOOD . I SAY GOOD LUCK CO FULMER .

Posted by: Sean Location: Dandridge on Nov 3, 2008 at 02:09 PM
I agree it is a somewhat sad day. A lot of people have spoken of Coach Fulmers "body of work". True, it is excellent. But let's look at the last 6 years. The winning percentage is more like 50-60%, not 75%. When you see a program steadily decline into mediocrity, it's time to make a change. He seems to have no control over the team - the discipline has been a joke for years. UT is constantly in the news for players getting arrested. That is certainly NOT what we want to be known for. I wish Coach Fulmer all the best, but I'm ready for some new blood. Go Vols!

Posted by: Charlie Location: Maryville on Nov 3, 2008 at 01:56 PM
I think that Bill Cowher or Steve Spurrier would be an amazing choice for the Vols. We need a coach that can really improve our team. As college football evolves, Tennessee is getting left in the dust. While everyone else (that matters anyway) is switching to a more spread-type-offense, Fulmer and Clawson have kept us running the ball and occasionally making a few short pass plays and maybe one or two attempts down field per game. Tennessee's defense is their one strong point, but you have to score points to win games. We need someone who can generate buzz and get better players to commit. Hamilton has commented that money is not an option. If that is the case, I expect to see someone coaching UT that is credible and NOT incompetent.

Posted by: Chet Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 01:55 PM
To Dave about Fulmer giving 1 million to UT. First, just because you have not heard about Paterno giving money does not mean that he did not. Second, Paterno makes less than 500K a year. By my calculations, Paterno gives 2.5 mill back to the school by being paid 2.5 mill less than Fulmer. It is easy to give 1 mill when you are being over paid 2 mill.

Posted by: William Location: Maynardville on Nov 3, 2008 at 01:53 PM
Glad to see an end to Fulmer's career. He certainly does not deserve a $6 million dollar buy out. If you do a bad job you don't get rewarded for it. Let him and his coaches lose money like everyone does. People are tired of paying the high cost of their wages and supposed talent.

Posted by: Andy Location: Hendersonville on Nov 3, 2008 at 01:39 PM
Yes, it is sad. Phil Fulmer is a good person and a class act. I hate to see it end this way. I really do.

Posted by: Andy Location: Hendersonville on Nov 3, 2008 at 01:38 PM

This is a sad day for Tn. football . Just kidding no it's not the sun is shining the kids are out side playing again even mom has a smile on her face she's not smile sense 2005 it's a good day after all.Think I going to call my mother in law and tell her it may not be her fault her daughter turned out to be just like her. It's a good

Comparing Phillip Fulmer, to Paterno, who Carolyn says he is a good and decent, maybe he is a good person,You evidently have never met the Fulmers who just recently gave $1,000,000 million dollars to the university. I have never heard of Paterno giving anything like that.

Posted by: Blake Location: Dandridge on Nov 3, 2008 at 01:19 PM
Why do so many of you pity for Fulmer so much? You argue that he has had 1 bad season but I am guessing that a lot of you forgot 2005, you know, the year we were supposed to win a National title and didn't even make a bowl game. Fulmer WAS a good coach but over time he just let it go. The game has passed him by and he is done. And some of you may argue his win percentage and all that good stuff however, if you take a look at the teams those wins came against, a good deal of them were against teams like Wyoming. I am sort of sorry to see him go but college football is changing and Fulmer refuses change. He is still trying to run the same plays he ran in 98 just because they won a championship then. Too bad that was 10 years ago guys. Before anyone knew what a spread was. Fulmer's time has just finally come and for one makes me happy. Maybe we can finally get a coach who can control a team and win some big games and put Tennessee back on the map.

LISTEN CAREFULLY TO A UK FAN, WHO HASN'T BEATEN FLORIDA...SINCE GENERAL SHERMAN MARCHED THROUGH ATLANTA IN THE CIVIL WAR...PHILLIP FULMER WON .750 PERCENT OF HIS GAMES. AS A KENTUCKY FOOTBALL FAN, I'D TAKE THAT ANYDAY!!! IT COULD BE WORSE...MUUUUUCH WORSE! TRUST ME!!!!

Posted by: Janet Location: Crossville on Nov 3, 2008 at 01:10 PM
I am sure that Cumberland County H.S. would welcome Coach Fulmer to take over the Jet Football Program, maybe he would coach both Stone and CCHS programs for free, since he obviously doesn't need the money. Does his resignation mean that student tuition may not have to be increased? Over 9 million dollars for eleven men's salaries, and we wonder how the U.S. got in such awful economic straights. How rediculus, it all seems. Shame on U.T. for ever letting sports achieve such high priority and elect to cut academic programs. As Gomer would say, "shame, shame, shame"

Posted by: Greg Location: Nashville on Nov 3, 2008 at 01:03 PM
Who in their right mind would want Spurrier to replace Fulmer? What's wrong with Boise State's Peterson? He's 51-3 over his last few years. He's undefeated this year! He won the Fiesta Bowl last year. His team is in the top 10 BCS! He makes $850K /year versus Fulmer's 2.4 M. We could get him cheap!!! Let's start winning again.

Posted by: Linda Location: Crossville on Nov 3, 2008 at 01:02 PM
New coaches don't always get it done.Look at the Michigan Wolverines, frist time in 33years their not going to a Bowl game.Don't give up on Phil Fulmer. He's a good coach an leader.

Posted by: Bud Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:55 PM
Coach Ken Sparks of Carson Newman is my choice. Six national championships...Top notch program every year...always ranked high...He is a local product too, went to old Young High School.

I agree that Fulmer was a good coach, but we need a change. A change that I don't see coming with Fulmer as our head coach. For as long as I can remember Fulmer has been our head coach and I think at one time he was wonderful, but now I think we need to get someone new in there to revive our program and make it what it once was. What we are playing right now is not UT football, and in order to get there again I think this is the road we must take.

Posted by: Stephanie Location: K-Town on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:52 PM
Ultimately the responsibility for Wins and Losses lies with the head coach. The coach is paid to produce a winner. I appreciate all he did for the Vols but it was past time for him to be gone. I am a True Vol Fan and I am glad he is gone. I care about the good of the program and not the good of one man. The program has got to come first and I think that is what has happened. I wish the best to him and his family and hope all Vol fans can come together to support the program and the fine young men who play for the name on the jersey and not the man coaching the team. Go Vols

I can honestly say this is the worst day in Tennessee football history and despite having been a Volunteer fan for over 30 years, I have watched my last Tennessee game!!! Because of a few fans (who despite the way the message boards read are not in the majority) and three particular reporters who got barred from contact with UT players after contacting Inky last year when they were told not to, we are losing the best coach we have ever had. Yeah, good luck Vol fans in finding another arrogant jerk like Pearl to lead your football team. Maybe when he tells you guys to go shop at Walmart like Greene did you'll wake up and realize that you are responsible for bringing in a jerk for a basketball coach and that you are also the reason your football team won't be compete. The booing at the games really goes a long way in helping a recruit to decide to come here, I'm sure they love hearing 107,000 people booing their own team. Great class. I'm through with being a Tennessee fan.

I would personally like to thank Coach Fullmer for his service and representation of the VOLS. He is a good man. I truly like the man. However, the resources and funds available at UT are among the best in this country and something is severely flawed...somewhere ! Sure, Vol fans are a bit spoiled and we do want to win EVERY game but know that isn’t going to happen. I have never felt that the play calls are all bad...but without execution they are not worth much! I think the leadership and team spirit is the problem. The old saying “There is NO I in t-e-a-m might just apply here! History shows that is possible to accomplish the near impossible if there is enough heart and desire. How do we fix it???? Wish I knew. I truly hate wasting the millions in buying out coaches contracts when it so desperately needed by the university for many other things. Whatever, I’ll still be ORANGE to the core. Nancy

This breaks my heart. It is a horrible decision. I have been a fan since we moved to Tennessee in 1995, and have proudly worn my Orange while living in Alabama and now South Carolina. I don't understand the shallow minds of the fans and mike hamilton.

I think it's a sad situation for coach Fulmer, along with the huge fan base we have we also have some of the most crictal and dumb founded fans about the game of college football in the nation,i wish fulmer and his family the best and I truely think like Bowden,or Petreno he shuold have been here to he decided other wise,so my question is to the dumb founded fans that call in to sports talk every sunday, you ask for fulmer's job who are you going to replace a 17 year [150-51]recorded with?

Posted by: Linda Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:41 PM
Fulmer shouldn't feel like he to resign or be forced out. He's been good for Tennessee. For anyone to be a fair weather friend and not support Fulmer or the team isn't a true Vol fan. He should ride it out. Things will get better.

Posted by: joe Location: jellico on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:30 PM
True VOL FANS will be upset by this as I am. Fulmer has proved himself time and time again. Not every year can be the best, team rebuild from time to time. The biggest problem with this years team is lack of heart. Some have it some don't, a true desire to be apart of one of the greatest football programs is the county is an honor that I think most of this years players are missing. I wish Fulmer the best and hope we don't see him on the opposite side of the field. This is really sad for us TRUE VOL FANS who stand behind the program win or lose and have confidence it will improve. Phill you have proved youself to be a winner.

Posted by: John Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:30 PM
This is a sad day for UT and the football program. As a 40 year contributor, I'm very disappointed in the way that our administration and "fans" have handled this issue. No one cared more about the quality of the University of Tennessee's athletic program than Phillip Fulmer.

Posted by: Gary Johnson Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:28 PM
It's a shame it came to this, but everything runs it's course and it had to be done done. It was obviously not working and the faces(players and fans) at Columbia pretty much showed that. I know that the staff is tight, but I hope that some coaches are retained, but that may b eup to the new coach coming in. I vote for Boise State coach(Peterson I believe). He is young, energetic, has a great scheme and has to recruit all over to Boise. And they play hard and SMART for him.

Posted by: Janice Location: jsteele77@gmail.com on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:26 PM
This is a joke......Phillip Fulmer IS UT football...everyone is allowed a bad season every 15-20 years....I think the fault lies with the new offensive coordinator. Obviously, he CAN'T "coordinate" AND in the morals of some of the players who are continually suspended. I believe in being a VOL fan through bad times (very few of them) as well as good. Tennessee fans are notorious for being "fair weather" fans, though. Go figure. It's a shame and, more importantly, a disgrace that more fans didn't have Fulmer's back..... Sheesh

Posted by: Carolyn Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:25 PM
There is NO comparison between Fulmer and Joe Paterno. Unlike Fulmer, Joe Paterno is a genuinely nice, decent man. Please don't lower Paterno by associating him to the pompous Fulmer.

Posted by: Steve Barr Location: Knoxville, Tn on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:23 PM
Bring in the SPUR MAN? Just the wake up call we might need to turn the program around. No more "yu the man" because of senior status. If you don't produce, you don't play! We have talent on paper, but can't seem to produce on the field. SPUR MAN is so hated by the Vol Nation that he would relish coming into a rock bottom program such as we have now and turning it around. One more "I told you so" on his resume. Just think we need the arrogance that has exemplified his career in order to be able to match up with the likes of the Urban Myths, the Mark Rickets, and the Les Nesmans of the SEC. As much as I've admonished the SPUR MAN in the past, the man can flat out coach. He might not have too many more years of wanting to coach, however, I believe he could get it done here at UT and go out a winner, not only on the field, but in his home state. By the way, I had to grit my teeth when I voted for him...

I think that Philip Fulmer should stay. He has done well for tennessee and the program over all. I think we should get rid of the new offensive cordiantor and the staff that he brought with him. Get a new offensive staff and go back to Fulmer's old scheme. I think that no one will do better for the tennessee programs besides Fulmer.

Posted by: joe Location: knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:19 PM
I think it is always shocking when a coach steps down from their postion or even is releived of their job,but in the end we all know its for the best of the university, and not always what the fans want, but everyone does want a winning season.I think that whoever replaces Fulmer will have a trying time to rebuild the tennessee vols team.

Posted by: Isaac Location: Kodak on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:18 PM
Plain and simple: the Johnny Majors playbook wasn't working anymore. I think the best choices out there are Chris Peterson (Boise St.), Kyle Wittingham (Utah), or the Steve Spurrier. Times have changed...the spread offense is our best bet.

Posted by: dianne Location: knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:17 PM
I feel Coach Fulmer has done a great job and we as fans should realize we cannot be winners all the time. So we have had a bad season, so did Alabama,Georgia,SC,and so on but we sould not be fair weather fans. I say GOOOOOOOOOO Vols we will be back on top next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Amy Location: Morristown on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:17 PM
I think it's time. He has no control over the team, there is no leadership there, and he has lost the support of the majority of TN fans. I don't think too many people are surprised that he isn't coming back. But after paying out his contract, will UT have enough money to get an SEC caliber coach to move us forward?

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Dandridge on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:17 PM
A suggestion for Fulmer's replacement Coach Quarles of Maryville High School would be a great investment.

Posted by: P.Miller Location: Pikeville, TN on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:17 PM
John Chavis is an excellent defensive coach and should not be let go. The defense this year is excellent. Why should he be let go? He comes up with good players every year.

Posted by: anne Location: chattanooga on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:13 PM
He should have been given more time. Surely Clawson will be gone, too, since he is partly responsible for this terrible season.

Posted by: Gary Location: Knoxville on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:11 PM
I do hope that people like John Adams are happy now that what they have tried so hard for yrs to get accomplished has now been accomplished. It is true that anyone in such a high profile position as UT Football coach is open to scrutiny from everyone but it has seemed that several people have had an agenda to get rid of Fulmer for some time now. It would be nice if people cared enough about sportwriters columns to pick them apart every day like the writers do the coach. Just watch in the future when Bruce Pearl has a couple of "down" years the same writers who are singing his praises will be the same ones howling that it is time for a change because the game has passed him by.

Posted by: Dave Location: M-ville on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:10 PM
Tennessee fans be careful what you wish for.Phillip Fulmer should be treated like a Paterno or Bowden when it comes to dedication, and loyalty to the university. You think your going to getlucky again like Pearl.Good Luck Mike Hamilton

you have got to be kiddin. The man has 1 bad season and every CLOWN armchair NON COACH is asking for the guys head. Hmm lets see some of you do better. I think we ALL seem to forget what he has given UT foootball. I would say given the fans but that is a title ALOT of you are not worthy of. It sure is hard to dig yourself out of a hole when everyone is throwing dirt on you.

Wouldn't it be great if Peyton Manning would consider being UT's new coach?

Posted by: Lee Location: Columbia on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:05 PM
I think its a shame what has happened. Despite my frustration over this season, there will be no one better than Fulmer to lead the Vols. I just don't understand how you go from being in, and should have won, the SEC Championship game 11 months ago to this. The graphic on national TV in the SC game proves that he has had one of the greatest winning percentages of all coaches. And he would have had another top recruiting class coming in. Its just ridiculous. It truly is a sad day for UT Football. Thanks Coach Fulmer for all you have done to make me proud to be a Vol. I wish you the best.

Posted by: Blackandblue Location: Morristown on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:04 PM
Leadership starts at the top and works down. Fulmer was that start. The Qtr back was the Team captain and Leader. Carmae has a way of coming full circle in life. Tenn did good with the mens basketball revamp in just the 1st year. I hope that UT will take the same approch as they did with the mens Basketball. Look at how in 2 years they improved.

Posted by: roger Location: newport on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:03 PM
this is the worst thing ut could do, these kids have got to care about the game there playing & i see 2 or 3 that does but that is all, the coach cant make them, i think UT would be making a huge mistake to get rid of fulmer!

Posted by: Newport Location: Newport on Nov 3, 2008 at 11:59 AM
After Fulmers comments in Sept. about 95% of the fans knowing nothing about football and that they were stupid, wonder where this leaves him now? Yes he did say that on the radio show after the game. The show was broadcast from Aubrys. It was the Auburn game. I was amazed he had said this, and was shocked he would insult his fans that way. He lost all that night with me. And I guess I am not that stupid, I said he was done that night.

Posted by: Bill Location: Westtown on Nov 3, 2008 at 11:53 AM
Coach Fulmer has served well but has lost his touch recruiting. You can see it in every game as we are not as good as anyone else offensively. 150-51 is a great record but "What have you done for me lately" is the cry fans have today and recent performance says "NOTHING." Get a recruiter, get a good coach (doesn't have to be a great coach but a great recruiter)and get the #1 quarterback in the country and the #3,7 and 15 best OLinemen and build quickly. Get a few JC players that can help tomorrow not in two years. fans need to go support the kids who play and forget your feelings for Coach Fulmer.

I think tennessee fans are crazy. We atleast gave tubby 7 bad seasons. You just played for the SEC Championship last year! It hasn't been great the past 4 years but it really hasn't been terrible until this year. He's still a good coach and i hope he doesn't end up at Clemson.

Fulmer's failure to maintain discipline was his downfall. It was no more apparaent to me in the GA Game when a UT player was penalized for slugging a GA player on the ground. He should have served a suspension via Fulmer for that. Failure to maintain discipline in college football is the downfall of ANY good program
