Knoxville, Tenn (WVLT) -- Knoxville Police say they've busted eight Austin-East football players for felony theft. It all happened because of a three-day shoplifting stakeout last weekend.

Do you think the Austin-East football players arrested during a shoplifting sting should be allowed to play in the playoffs?
Yes, they’re innocent until proven guilty
Yes, but they should be suspended for at least a quarter or two
No, they may be innocent until proven guilty, but they were arrested and charged
No, they need to be kicked off the team
Not sure…I need more information about the case

Coaches and the Knox County Schools won't say whether the players will take the field for Friday's playoff game against Knoxville Catholic.

Police arrested Dana Littlejohn, 18, and Jared Neal, 19, Saturday. Police say their arrested teammates are minors.

KPD spokesman Darrell Debusk says, "Once those individuals were arrested, they were indicted. They were students at Austin-East and they were players on the football team."

Debusk says they all face charges of felony theft and evading arrest.

Volunteer TV talked with Dana Littlejohn's grandmother at practice Tuesday night. Ozella Littlejohn says her grandson is innocent, and he should be allowed to play.

"He didn't do the stealing," Ozella said about her grandson.

Police say the players shoplifted at the Marshalls on Washington Pike in East Knoxville. Arrest reports say officers saw the group worked together to pass and hide items under their clothing. The reports say the accused players refused stop when officers commanded them to do so.

Police say the players stole nearly $700 worth of merchandise.

"It was an organized effort. They went in with the plan. They knew what they were doing, and they carried out their plan, and they got caught," Debusk said.

But Ozella says Dana told her "he took them and dropped them off, and then he came back and picked them up. He wasn't involved in any of the theft stuff like they've said on the TV."

Austin-East's Coach said no decision been made about whether the accused teens will play in this week's game.

Knox County Schools says "This matter is still under review."

"If the coach thinks it's ok for them to play, and until they're proven guilty, then play," said Knoxville resident Jeff Phelps.

But Knoxville resident Shana Hinton disagrees.

"They all should get punished, if they're guilty or not. Why were you all there? It's already making our community look bad as it is."

Ozella says she'll be with her grandson in court.

"I teach him better than that. He knows better than to steal," Ozella said.

Knox County Schools says any further comments from the district could violate the Family Education Rights Privacy Act.

The players were among 33 people arrested in the sting.

Police say officers recovered $9,000 worth of stolen merchandise overall.

Knoxville Police partnered with the Knox County Sheriff's Office on the stakeout.

Police say they'll continue to crack down on shoplifting throughout the holiday season.

---
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) --The Knoxville Police Department and the Knox County Sheriff's Department arrested 33 people over a three-day period in connection a shoplifting sting, according to a Knox County Sheriff's Office release, and Austin-East High School head football coach Kwayu Graham says six to eight of those arrested are members of his football team.

According to the Sheriff's Department, 33 arrests were made in the shoplifting sting targeting 11 stores between Nov. 13 and Nov. 15.

Of the 33 arrested, eight were juveniles.

Two of the Austin-East players have been identified as Jared Neal, 19, and Dana Littlejohn, 18.

Despite the arrests, Coach Graham says the students involved will play in Friday's playoff game.

But Knox County Schools spokesman Russ Oaks says, "This matter is still under review, and Coach Graham's remarks are premature."

Officers targeted stores located in East Knoxville, West Knoxville and Farragut.

Approximately $9,000 worth of stolen merchandise was recovered.

Neal and Littlejohn both face charges of theft and evading arrest.

to the person that that aint man enough to show there name and had the nerve to write something to me!!!!!!!!!!!! you dont even know the people that did it. and how would you know if they are good kids or not you dont know them so you should just shut up cause you dont know if there are criminals so i think you should get a life and stop writing stuff about them im sick of everybody talking about the kids from austin east dont nobody know them.and you have the nerves to call people punks, thugs and criminals you should be ashamed of yourself its funny that none of them has been in trouble before.and as for coach graham he is a great coach so leave him alone

Come on football players, what were you thinking. What kind of example is this? I am so glad they were caught, now you know they are guilty. I feel it is a great call to prohibit them from playing.

Are you kidding me? This whole post is embarrasing; I have never seen so many uneducated responses in one place before. No one here has any place in deciding what should happen to these guys. Throwing in the whole race card is ridiculous as well and too often used as a crutch when the person has nothing intelligent to say or make an argument with. Why do you think there are people out there attempting these types of things in the first place? Apparently there is no education worth anything in this town. Sad story.

TO Brittney: I'm sick and tired of everytime someone gets caught stealing, selling drugs, robbing a store, etc. that someone steps up and says " they are good kids " What a load of crap. I'm a good kid! That is why I don't get caught up in messes like this. Here is a news flash for everyone: THEY WERE CAUGHT ON CAMERA!!! Now some bleeding heart defense attorney will make it sound like it wasn't thier fault but does that change the fact that they are CRIMINALS? No, it doesn't. I would have more respect for them if they just stood up and said "Yea, I did it and I'm sorry." but stop with the whining about how they were raised right and taught better and they are good kids blah, blah, blah. Thugs, punks, and criminals; that is what they are and if they want a better life I have some advice for them. You can't STEAL IT, YOU EARN IT. It is not impossible, but it is up to YOU. And Coach Graham should be fired because he is not interested in building a quality young man, just winning

I have one question I haven't seen asked. I am not ORIGINALLY from TN, but instead KY and it is against state rules to allow a 19 year old to play a sport. Is this not true in TN? I think anyone who would allow a player accused of a felony (in which they EVADED arrest--wink wink nod nod--usually implicates guilt) to play in a sporting event or represent their school in anyway is very sad. I think if this were the student body president the student should be removed from that position as well...they ARE representing the school in some capacity.

A student should not be punsihed if they are arrested and found not quilty but in this case they have not even given these boy a chance. They haven't even been to court yet. I think it sounds guilty until proven innocent. If one of these playter are cleared they will be right back on the team if they win playing next week.

first dont nobody know what they where caught second for all those that think they shouldnt play all of yall are wrong for that if it where any other school it would be fine but austin east is always the blame for something fights and all but if im not mistakin alot of school football players get caught with stuuf like drugs and stuff and dont nobody say any thing.dont nobody know what happen except for the people that where there so all of yall that has something negative to say yall can go on because yall just saying that because they are from austin east all of them are good kids so yall just leave them alone

Have you ever came home and found your back door open or a window in your home busted out? Have you walked into your home to find that someone has broken into your home, went through all of your personal belongings, and walked out with your valuables? If you are defending these criminals, then when this happens to YOU, please do NOT call the police. Our prisons are full of so many innocent people that they do not need to attempt to find the criminals that came into your home. You won't like the feeling - I assure you.

My home was john tarleton home for KIDS,these kids had the goods on them so why the big when I was a kid if you did what kids and MEN;yes some were men they all know right from wrong. Why if you play baseball, basketball football you get a pass what gives kids 6-10 years look up to most ball players . In the NFL our tennessee player Mr. Little Killed a Mother with his big SUV with what he he got a pass . Botton line here kick then out the front door yesterday as for the 18 and 19 year old I was in the Air Force at that age DO NOT LET THEM ANY OF THE BOYS PLAY this IS what this is about in the first place WIN AT ALL COST full speed ahead ;or as they said in my day Winning is not everything just DO NOT LOSE if any of men or boys play I hope who they play kicks a big lesson to there South end when they are running North big time like 89-0 I played for 20 years in TEXAS they would NOT let you play.If these boys came into your house and got your things would you look the other way .

Posted by: Tim Location: Knoxville on Nov 19, 2008 at 06:51 PM
This is America and here you are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law....a court of law, not a court of public opinion..What if you sanction these boys and after all the evidence is presented some of them are found to be innocent? What then? We all know that the police can make mistakes and are sometimes over zealous in the execution of their duties...just my 2 cents worth...

Posted by: Jeremy Location: Madisonville TN on Nov 19, 2008 at 06:20 PM
NO. They shouldn't be allowed to play. They were arrested because they got caught. END OF STORY. Racial tones have NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS!!!!! THEY GOT CAUGHT!!!!!! BAD BOYS! BAD BOYS!

Posted by: Sue Location: E.TN on Nov 19, 2008 at 06:19 PM
There should be no questions asked, they should be taken off the football roster. Shoplifting is a felony. DUI is not but it was enough for a school-record breaking teammate to get taken off the roster right before playoff game. Too much emphasis is placed on sports instead of getting a good education. Playing sports is a past time, going to school is a necessity in this world.

Posted by: Kate Location: Madisonville TN on Nov 19, 2008 at 06:15 PM
The players at Austin East should not be allowed to play this Friday. What kind of message are we sending our "up coming" adults! Educators are suppose to train and teach our children, NOT support the misbehavior and CRIMES that these young men committed. How could the coaches, and the school even entertain the thought of allowing these young men to play!

Posted by: Clarence Location: Lonsdale on Nov 19, 2008 at 05:34 PM
I skipped school one day. Mama caught me, took me to school, marched me in front of Coach and told him if I was too lazy to go to school I didn't need to be playing football that week.

Posted by: jeylynn Location: knox on Nov 19, 2008 at 05:34 PM
Innocent til proven guilty!! Stop trying to punish people, and make them feel like their in jail, when they arent! Let them play!! They are innocent til proven otherwise so stop treatin them like they arent! Yall act like they bout to hurt people and some more...it is not an aggrivated assalt,...dummies its theft!..leave it and them alone!

at least it was evidence of 'team'work.

The Catholic High Coach shuld refuse to take the field. The playing field is not place for thugs.

LET THEM PLAY!

Posted by: K.T Location: KNOX on Nov 19, 2008 at 04:29 PM
If I had been caught stealing, there would not be a story to tell.My parents would not allow me to play.

Posted by: Pat on Nov 19, 2008 at 04:21 PM
I know the arrest of the 8 A-E students for shoplifting is big news to some you, but my understanding is that it was a total of 33 people arrested. What about the other 25 people? Isn't that news worthy too?

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 19, 2008 at 03:44 PM
Athletes have to be role models. And this is just a high school game (not the NFL), teach them a lesson and kick them off the team. If some say they are innocent then let the courts decide. Until then no football. Teach them a lesson before they rape and kill someone.

Posted by: ROADRUNNER09 on Nov 19, 2008 at 02:49 PM
LET THEM PLAY

Posted by: CHAE' on Nov 19, 2008 at 02:44 PM
I BELIVE THAT THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO PLAY FRIDAY BECAUSE FIRST OF ALL IT WASNT SCHOOL RELATED AND SECOND OF ALL THEIR INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY. THERE HAS BEEN NUMEROUS INCIDENTS INVOLVING HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYERS BUT SINCE ITS AE ITS GETTING MADE INTO SOMETHING THAT ITS NOT.ALSO THE MEDIA NEEDS TO SLOW DOWN BECAUSE THEY ARE THE ONES MAKING IT WORSE FOR THE PLAYERS. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR 8 PEOPLE TO STEAL OVER $600 WORTH OF CLOTHING. THE MEDIA IS JUST SAYIN SO BECAUSE THEY WANT IT TO BECOME A FELONY SO THAT ANOTHER BLACK LIFE CAN BE TAKEN.ALL THE PLAYERS INVOVLED ARE GREAT AT WHAT THEY DO AND CAN ACTUALLY GET SCHOLARSHIPS BUT BECAUSE THEIR BLACK THE WHITE MAN IS TRING TO TAKE THAT FROM THEM. SO FOR EVERYBODY THATS AGAINST THEM YALL NEED TO GET A LIFE AND LET THESE YOUNG MEN GET ON WITH THEIRS....THEY WILL PLAY FRIDAY AND THAY WILL WIN.PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 19, 2008 at 01:38 PM
I guess my question is, of the 33 that were caught stealing, why are the only ones catching the spotlight are the eight from Austin-East? Does anyone else not see the fault in that? How could race not be a issue here when they are obviously singled out because they play sports at a inner-city school. Wake up people!

Posted by: SUCHASHAME Location: Knoxville on Nov 19, 2008 at 01:33 PM
I am truly saddened for the Austin East community. These boys have not only let down their entire community, but their families and classmates. I don't know if any of these players had a chance at a scholarship to play ball, but if so then they have thrown away a free ride to a college education. What a shame! But that is the least of their worries at this point. They SHOULD NOT play in Friday's game. Once again, how sad for their community and for their teammates.

Posted by: 2Bad Location: Knox on Nov 19, 2008 at 01:22 PM
These young men should be suspended until the legal process is complete. Just because football "may be all they have" does not excuse them from FOOLISHLY THROWING AWAY what they had! They should have thought about that beforehand. Coach, do the right thing, climb the rough side, guide these young men properly so that they will have a REAL chance in this world: SIT THEM OUT-MAKE THEM THINK before its too late. I too was young, black, poor, and tempted. God and good role models let me see that putting my energy toward getting up, getting out, and making the most of my mind and talents was the only way to become what i dreamed. I did it with even less opportunities than these young men. I pray they find their way. Also, I do know some folks at KCHS. I know they will show class and welcome whoever comes on Friday, which is their style.

I'm sorry AE if you think your getting treated unfairly, but if it was any other school the players would have already been kicked off. Also, your school has more programs than other public schools so I don't feel sorry for you. Your kids have more available than most public schools as a Magnet school so go cry somewhere else. In other words you are getting special treatment. Also, Mr. Littlejohns grandmother has been saying her grandson knows right from wrong and wouldn't do that -- she's a former teacher at Northwest and I wonder how many kids she punished for doing wrong whose parents said the same thing to her and she didn't believe them!!!

Paul: Just because a student is 18 does not mean (special ed) Students borned after oct will be 18 at graduation. Coach do whats right let them sit the sidelines.

4 THE PEOPLE THAT DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THEIR LIFE. PLEASE LEAVE OUR SCHOOL ALONE. IF IT WAS SOME OTHER SCHOOL THEY WOULD HAVE NOT HAVE MADE HEAD LINES. SO STOP MAKING A BIG DEAL OUT THIS. YALL ARE VEERY CHILDESS PEOPLE.

Posted by: Shondia Location: East Knox County on Nov 19, 2008 at 12:45 PM
Yes, they should be able to play they are innocent until proven guilty. This happened outside of school, therefore that is were it need to stay. Being African American I'm sure they will be punished for their crime. Football might be the only positive thing that these boys have to look forward too!

Posted by: Greg Location: Knoxville on Nov 19, 2008 at 12:36 PM
As a football Dad. These boys were arested and charged. They should be suspended until a full investigation is completed. If this happens after the playoffs to bad. They should not have been there in the first place.

Posted by: Tommy Location: Talbott, TN on Nov 19, 2008 at 12:35 PM
My opinion is that you have to pay for the actions that you do. If these guys are guilty, they should all suffer the consequences. They should face it like adults, ask not to play for the wrong they have done. No one likes theves.

Posted by: sylvia Location: knoxville on Nov 19, 2008 at 12:19 PM
no, they should not be allowed to play, i always say "you do the crime, you do the time" why should they be treated any different then anybody else? just because they are football players don't give them the right to steal, and expect to be treated better, and avoid the judge. if they don't get punished (playing in the playoff), they think they can do it again, if they don't get punished, other players might get the same idea.

Posted by: teaka Location: knoxville on Nov 19, 2008 at 11:27 AM
why eveybody trying to put ae down thay sould play

Posted by: Tay Location: Knoxville on Nov 19, 2008 at 11:26 AM
Why are the players being publicized? When there was 25 others involved. Why did the Judge give out the information to the public? Because his son play with Catholic. The public would have not heard about this situation if the Judge had not give out the information, thinking that it is going to help Catholic.

Posted by: Dave Location: knoxville on Nov 19, 2008 at 10:44 AM
They were caught STEALING! They need to be rotting in Jail ( and the minors need to be in a Juvenile corrections facility ). The fact that they play sports is irrevelant.

Posted by: Larry Location: Knoxville on Nov 19, 2008 at 10:24 AM
To the one who posted about Fulton: Yes, several years ago a player was caught on tape at school stealing. Fulton's coach suspended the player to maintain discipline.

18 & 19 year old high school ball players? No wonder they have a good record. They should be playing JV in college with other young men instead of with boys! Of course, by law, any special ed. student can stay in school till age 21; think about it=11 men , age 20 &21, playing high school ball! They could be state champs like alcoa and maryville!

Posted by: Randy Location: Jefferson City on Nov 19, 2008 at 06:56 AM
I agree with innocent until proven guilty, but these guys were caught WITH the merchandise UNDER their clothing, and charged with felony theft. Football is not above the law, even in East Tenn. It would be a disgrace to let them play. If I was the Catholic coach, I would refuse to play the game. This is not a matter of race...this is the LAW!

Posted by: dad Location: Sweetwater on Nov 19, 2008 at 06:43 AM
the school or I should say the school board should have a policy in place. but of course it will have to be handled with caution, or Jessie will come running down to cry.....

Posted by: snicolef Location: east knoxville on Nov 19, 2008 at 06:30 AM
well i know wat they did was wrong but they should get to play and be punished equally as the other 25 that got caught that same weekend dont put more on there punishment than the others cuz they no better than them and if they dont get to play then this whole thing is unjust and not right and i feel like if this were some where else at another school it wouldnt be broadcasted like it is it doesnt make any sense for the cameras and photographers to be hindin in bushes and around fences around the school and at practice but this is nothing new cause the media is always tryin to bring AE down they never show the positive things that are going on but yes they should be punished but not until the trail and not with something a lil as a football game cuz its way bigger than that

That is so wrong, 8 players charged with with felony theft, and the coach calls it a prank that went bad. Wheres is head at? Or better yet where does he live and I'll go pull a prank on him, steal his valuables. Thats wrong his attitude towards his players.

Would they play if they wnt to Farragut or Bearden? What about if they went to Catholic? Wasn't there a similiar situation with some Fulton players a whhile back?

these thugs think that because a black man in president elect, that it's ok to rob. What message does this send to youngers kids if we allow these boys to play in a football game?is fulmer coaching austin east now ?? kick them off. the school district calls for any player arrested (not convicted) are by default kicked off hte team. Stop thinking about one game, and imagine the lesson you set for these kids if they areallowed to play. Send a good message and ban them from playing football. Crime doesn't pay. If the kids were white, this wouldn't have been an issue, they would have been kicked off hte team. before you slam me, i am black.

Kick them off the team. If it were anyone else they for sure would be kicked off the team! They were caught with the merchandise and arrested. How much more guilty can anyone be??? It's crazy that we're even having this type of discussion. What's to discuss? The coach just want's to win the game is why he is allowing them to play in Friday night's game. Crazy I tell you!! Kick 'em off the team.

Posted by: anybodyelse Location: knoxville on Nov 18, 2008 at 05:45 PM
If it were anybody else they would not be allowed to play. They were caught red handed with the merchandise. If it were boys from the opposing team their coach would be the first in line jumping up and down if their coach said they could play. If those boys play Friday night someone should file a lawsuit. It's not fair and that coach is sending the wrong message. There could be more involved than just those 8 and he may be protecting them.

Posted by: GB Location: West Knox on Nov 18, 2008 at 05:43 PM
Actually I am tired of the majority of us immediately assuming that everyone is guilty. Look what we (not everyone, just many of us) did to that Halls' teacher. Now we are suddenly assuming these kids are guilty? This is so wrong.

Posted by: Brad Location: knoxville on Nov 18, 2008 at 05:21 PM
All these players see is the way athletes get away with more and more each year. I guess you only have to look at the Univ. of Tenn. football program to see that.

Posted by: Judy Location: Knoxville on Nov 18, 2008 at 04:58 PM
Why only publish the names of 2 AE football players. Were there other players involved. All the names should be published except of course for the minors. None of those involved should be allowed to play in the game.

Posted by: Charity Location: Knoxville on Nov 18, 2008 at 04:37 PM
I hope I'm not the only person disappointed that the athletes will get to play in the playoff game. How is it okay to reward them for their illegal actions? I'm glad to see that the school cares more about their football record than developing upstanding citizens.
