PIGEON FORGE, Tenn (WVLT) -- Rising water in Waldens Creek and in several tributaries of the Little Pigeon River forced about 40 to 50 people from their homes last night.
Most of the problems occured in the Waldens Creek, Wears Valley, and Riverbend areas of Pigeon Forge according to Fire Chief Tony Watson.
"The good thing is we didn't get as much water as we usually do from Gatlinburg during the storm," Watson said. "The storm just mainly stayed overtop of us and hit us with three inches of rain."
Fire crews began asking people to evacuate late last night, but Watson said only about forty to 50 actually left.
Most stayed with family and friends, although eight went to a shelter, and eventually the American Red Cross helped them fins shelter in a hotel.
Most residents were cleared to return home Wednesday morning.
Watson says road crews were quick to close roads to keep people from driving through flooded areas.
"We closed roads early and often," Watson said. Still, fire crews had to rescue two people after they drove their vehicles into flooded areas.
