KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) -- Goody's has begun the process of closing its Knoxville, Tennessee, distribution and corporate offices by laying off most of its associates.

VolunteerTV.com broke the story around 9:45 a.m. after a Goody's manager with knowledge of the situation told us he had been told he and his entire staff are being fired today.

That manager said most other departments are doing the same, and a small number of people will be retained to help with the liquidation, then be out of a job too.

According to a termination letter obtained by WVLT-TV, 572 employees work at the Goody's corporate office and the distribution center. An exact number of layoff was not released by the company, but sources say "most" will be laid off today.

Goody's held meetings at the corporate offices on Parkside Drive at 9, 10, and 11 am on Monday. After the meeting, many employees could be seen leaving the company property.

The termination letter says terminated employees did not have to leave right after the meeting, but their company badges would be deactivated tonight.

Volunteer TV News crews were twice escorted off the property while trying to interview affected workers.

Goody's spokesperson Joanna Gager says on her corporate answering machine that she is on maternity leave and her voice mail would not accept messages. Repeated attempts to contact Gager since liquidation was announced on Friday have been unsuccessful.

According to an employee termination letter obtained by WVLT-TV, Goody's plans to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware on Tuesday, January 13th. Chapter 7 governs the process of liquidation.

The first terminations were to begin today, or within fourteen days, according to the letter. The termination letter says all employees will learn their termination date within 14 days. Our source says most people would be terminated today.

The entire facility closure, according to the letter, won't be complete until at least March 16th, 2009, and a small numbers of employees will remain employed until that date.

No severance payments are being handed out, and all medical, dental, life and disability benefits end Monday night at midnight.

"We have made every effort to stabilize and preserve the business, but unfortunately, as announced today Goody's has determined that it is not able to continue operations and is beginning the orderly discontinuation of operations," according to CEO Paul White's letter.

"We wish we could have provided you more notice but it has become obvious only in the past few days that our efforts at preserving our business have failed," White continued.

Goody's Family Clothing operates 287 department stores across the U.S., mostly in the southeast. The company employed about ten thousand workers at the end of 2008.

This posting was on a TV News website. The channel is in Knoxville, TN and EVERYONE WHO LIVES in Knoxville, TN, KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT AND WHO Goody's is. There is no need to qualify or describe it out for you. This family run and owned business has been an intragul part of this city for 55 years and it was THRIVING, until a few years ago it was purchased by a bunch of crooks. It is a BIG DEAL to the 10,000 employees who are now going to be out of a job. SOME OF WHICH have worked for this company for 20 or 30 years. Starting over at 45 years old???? NOT EASY. Thank you to WVLT for getting the news right. We need you.

Why are you all commenting on something you do not know about, and then are so ignorant you tell the world that you don't know what Goody's is?!? I am a Goody's associate in the stores, and let me tell you a little about liquidation. Liquidation is about getting the money owed to the vendors. Unfortunately, you all think liquidation means great deals for you and it doesn't. They advertise the sale to get people into the stores, because customers think they are getting a deal. You should have been shopping before liquidation, when your money would have helped keep us afloat, and tto those of you who did I want to personally say "Thank YOU!" Now you are just helping us pay our vendors and lose our jobs quicker. Maybe you should be googling "liquidation" instead of Goody's Family Clothing, then you would understand. And it is "GOODY'S FAMILY CLOTHING." Google that and you should get some results.

Maybe if you lazy people would read the whole article instead of just the beginning, you would see it where it mentions Goody's family clothing.

In reply to Tim from So. Cal - you have your Goody's mixed up - There is a Goody's headache powder and also Goody's Family Clothing. Petty did commercials for the headache Goody's, not the clothing retailer.

I agree with everyone who mentioned that the writer didn't let anyone know what Goody's did - I had to look it up. Apparently, the journalist who wrote this didn't attend a qualified Journalism School because if he had then telling us what they did and who they were would have been at the top of the story. You wonder if business is that bad or if taking a knee jerk reaction to closing is a sign of the times to come.

The writer said "Goody's Family Clothing operates 287 department stores across the U.S., mostly in the southeast. The company employed about ten thousand workers at the end of 2008. How could you not know what he was talking about or what Goody's was??

It appears that the United States is finally reaping the true benefits of a "free trade" economy as it relates to free trade with other nations. Most college graduates are taught that money and value can be created from a swirling unnatural mist(speculation and the stock market).I think this is further proof of the fact that except in very rare instances there is a set value for wealth in the world.Internationally, a Country's wealth is increased if its export value outweighs it's import value.Pretty simple concept often ignored.Due to the fact that we have shut down our Country’s Industrial and mfg. capacity, our stock market only thrives on the false impression of wealth or value rather than hard goods and is often driven by ballooning personal debt of the credit holders(you and me.)(ref consumer market). An international free trade economy only works if the entire world is on an equal footing. When you are trying to compete with nations having low living standards we have a problem

Tn. state law provides that final wages of employees who quit or are discharged must include any vacation pay or other compensatory time owed to employees by virtue of company policy or labor agreement. Failure to give proper and timely WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act) notice makes an employer liable to each employee for back pay and benefits over the period the employee was un-notified, up to 60 days.

Sorry for the employees who are losing their jobs.

Posted by: Tim Location: So.-Cal. on Jan 13, 2009 at 11:33 AM
What about the legally-mandated 60-day notice to employees? Another company trying to "skate" on its responsibilities? Hope the soon-to-be-unemployed get legal represenation to protect their rights and assets. It wasn't all that long ago Richard Petty was doing Goody's commercials, and they sponsored their "Headache Award" to the driver with the worst luck in a particular NASCAR race. Sad thing is, I've tried Goody's analgesic, and it really does work. Guess they just couldn't compete against the mega-corp's. in the pharmaceutical world. Just like Mother's Cookies, another American brand bites the dust. Sorry 'bout that, y'all!

Hardly a surprise this "discount" clothing store has gone bust. I went to their "liquidation" sale only to discover that the advertised 30-60% off represented their normal pre-liquidation prices, except where they had actually raised some prices from December. Example: the tops I actually went to buy were $14 each or 2 or more for $12 each were now $14 with no price break for 2 or more. Jewelry was 30% off when the same items were 40% off before Christmas. Etc. Go to any department store for the name brands -- they'll be discounted as much or more than Goody's. Too bad.

I feel for the employees who are losing their jobs. But it looks like goody's failure sounds like bad management practices.Somebody told me that they had marked everything in the store 70% off but what they did was mark their merchandise up and then take only 30% off of some items I say let them keep their high priced merchandise and go shop at walmart.

What IS Goody's? Bob is right. The author should have told us that. Off to the Googles...

wtf is Goods???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Posted by: denise Location: denver on Jan 13, 2009 at 07:21 AM
This story was on a national well known website. Once you click the story, the author gives no indication what Goody's is!? It wasn't until I read the comments that I realized it is a clothing store.

Posted by: Wayne Location: Sacramento on Jan 13, 2009 at 07:16 AM
I agree with Bob - this is a poor article in terms of journalistic style. Exactly what Goody's DOES should be a lead off information item.

Posted by: Ian Location: NS on Jan 13, 2009 at 06:48 AM
Bob you ever here of Google??? If you Googled Goodies you would see they are a clothing company in 20 states in the USA.

Posted by: Antoine Location: Gulberger III on Jan 13, 2009 at 06:45 AM
laying off most of its associates. Yeah right, They no treat us like "associates." Hey Bob Location: watch out and don't be no smacked in the face like we is.

Goody's is either a clothing retailer, headache powder manufacturer or online chocolate company...

Posted by: mike Location: ohio on Jan 13, 2009 at 06:39 AM
yes, exactly what is "Goody's"?

Posted by: K. Richardson Location: Baltimore, Maryland on Jan 13, 2009 at 06:26 AM
This article shows why Newspaper reporters are needed. Not once did the writer tell you what Goody's business was. What do they sale? I found the link from CNN, so I don't live in that market.

Awww, I thought it was the headache powder people.

WHat a rotten article: What does Goodys do or sell. Seems like a basic piece of information for a news article. Go back to school!

Posted by: John Location: Florida on Jan 13, 2009 at 05:21 AM
Kind of ironic that the headaches of the economy does in Goodys. I guess I'll just go back to aspirins

Posted by: Gina Location: California on Jan 13, 2009 at 05:21 AM
Writer: would it have been that hard to mention what Goody's actually *does*? I had to Google Goody's just to find that it's a clothing store. Besides that, this is very sad news and I pray for the workers affected.

Posted by: SCNative843 Location: South Carolina on Jan 13, 2009 at 05:13 AM
I am heartbroken over our Goody's clothing store closing. I just discovered how good their clothes really are and now this. I am so very sorry, guys. My heart goes out to you all.

Posted by: Nick Location: California on Jan 13, 2009 at 04:44 AM
Terrible reporting, as if everyone knew what Goody's was. A failing grade in basic journalism. It appears Goody's was a family clothing retailer. http://www.goodysonline.com/

This is a real shame! Goody’s was an excellent company which served its vast customer base with honor, integrity, and value while responsibly providing for its employees. This is a perfect example of the results of GOP deregulation. AIG and other Wall Street giants will still be reaping the benefits of excellent salaries and health insurance thanks to GOP mandated bailouts while Goody’s employees are drawing unemployment checks. It’s simply amazing how citizens of Tennessee staunchly support the GOP to the detriment of their own best interests.

So...what is "Goody's"? What, when, where, how about the company...may be the reporter should consider a refresh in Writing 101?

Posted by: Shea Location: Little Rock, AR on Jan 13, 2009 at 03:38 AM
In response to "Bob" in location "Jones", it is obvious that he neither lives in the South, nor does he shop very much. If he did, he would understand that Goody's is a popular retailer. If he followed the news over the past year, he would understand Goody's has been under financial distress and has closed many stores in the South. Therefore, it is not the author of the article who should be "slapped". Instead, it is Bob, who should keep up better with news in the South, as well as business trends. Maybe Bob needs advice about the definitions of recession and inflation.

I am sorry that this happened in such trying times with our economy for these individuals, best of luck and best wishes in the job hunt.

Posted by: Morehead KY on Jan 12, 2009 at 09:25 PM
I feel sorry for all of Goody's employees for losing their jobs. Plus, I feel sorry for my community, this is the only store to buy clothing at other than Walmart or FashionBug. Now, we will have to drive at least 75 miles East or West to buy clothing unless we want "wallyworld" clothing! Goody's was a wonderful clothing store, especially when we were in a pinch & didn't have time to drive the extra distance.

Sad story. I feel for those 572 who are losing their jobs.
