KNOXVILLE (WVLT) – The story of Terry Jones and his dog JJ is one of love and devotion that lasted all the way to the very end.
Jones and his canine companion died on Friday after they both went into the hospital at the same time.
If you were to stop by Gertrude Jones home, you would see that the Yorkshire terrier was in nearly every picture taken of her son Terry.
“There he is with JJ, do you see that?” she asked while holding up a photo. “That right there is happiness.
Terry raised the dog from after receiving her as a six week old puppy. During the last decade, they became inseparable and the family said they did everything together from playing around to fishing.
"Believe it or not, they even went to the movies together," said Larry Jones, Terry’s brother. "They were just a wonderful pair and they were made for each other, I can tell you that.”
As he grew older, Jones became chronically ill with liver and kidney problems. He was hospitalized about two dozen times last year, and each time seemed particularly bad on the Yorkie.
"I watched him go down hill and I watched JJ go down hill at the same time," said Gertrude.
Terry was recently admitted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for what would be his last time at the hospital. A few days later, his family had to take JJ to the Broadway Veterinary Hospital.
"I told Terry she was sick,” Gertrude said, “and he said ‘I knew she was, she wasn't eating because her food had just been coming back up.’"
Terry and JJ’s final moment together came at Broadway Veterinary.
“The dog looked up at him, like that direct in the eyes and tears were coming out of her little old eyes,” Gertrude said. “There were tears coming out of her eyes. I've never seen anything like that."
Terry and JJ’s lives ended on the same day last week and just hours apart.
“I'd say they loved one another,” Gertrude said. “They wanted to be with one another and that's what happened. God took them both together."
JJ has been buried in the family's memorial garden, where the Jones' plan to sprinkle Terry's ashes.
"I think we'll put some right here,” said Larry, pointing to the garden.
Family members are grateful that the dog and his human, who shared everything, including the same bed, will rest together forever.
"That's truly man's best friend right there," Larry said.
The memorial was originally built for Terry’s father. Gertrude said she plans to place plaques there to also remember the special relationship her son shared with his Yorkie.
A memorial service for Terry is set for 6:30 PM on Tuesday night at the North Knoxville Baptist Church.

JJ passed with the same health issues Terry had. JJ just wanted to be with Terry, they were best friends and they loved one another, unconditionally.
I bet that dog was afraid he was going to have to go to that animal shelter in Oak Ridge so he took his own life
I also have a Yorkie, that I,ve had since he was 6 weeks old. This touching and very loving storty brought me to tears like you would not believe. Mine also sleeps with me,follows me very step I take, and jumps up and at the door when he hears me come home.[there is a smuge on the door window where his little face gets against it to see me.] My heart go,s out to the family, and GOD BLESS AND BE WITH YOU ALWAYS.
