25K motorcyclists driving "The Dragon" and driving local economy
In Blount County this weekend, it's miles and miles of motorcycles, as bikers converge on "The Dragon," one of the most famous stretches of road for cyclists in the world. An increase in traffic comes an increase to the local economy, as thousands of riders will be spending money throughout East Tennessee.

BLOUNT COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) -- "500 to a thousand dollars"

"Probably five to six hundred bucks"

"Already spent about 200, so probably spend 200 more"

Twenty-five thousand bikers will be doin' "The Dragon" this 4th of July weekend, coming from all over the country. And that means big bucks for the local economy.

"Well in excess of a million and a half dollars in tax money," says local business owner Jody Montgomery. "I know just from our small corner down here between myself and Dave Ramsey, the owner of The Pit Stop and my wife, we generate quite a bit. It's changed the world in this part of the country."

At the 129 Motorcycle Pit Stop, this weekend drives annual sales. And that means stocking shelves and stocking up on extra food.

"Oh I definitely have to make a cisco, a big cisco run just before the week starts," Pit Stop Owner Jackie Ramsey told WVLT. It'll be a big weekend for us all. The holiday weekends are really big out here."

While bikers are staying at hotels and motels throughout East Tennessee, one popular spot is here at the Punkin Center Motorcycle Resort, but with more than 200 campsites and cabins, it's been sold out for months."

"We'll be jam packed this weekend. All the cabins have been booked up for about two months. RV's still calling for RV sites," Montgomery, said.

Biker Craig Ziler from Clearville, PA said "We're headed to Pigeon Forge. We come up through the Dragon's Tale this morning, going to Pigeon Forge."

Were he'll drop his kick stand and drop some more cash. Cash that comes from this big biker weekend.

"If you know that show, The Crab Show, this is our crab season. This is definitely our time to do our business," Ramsey, said.
