KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The guns in parks debate will soon fire in front of Knox County Commission.

The Knox County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board has recommended banning guns in all the 42 parks. The board makes its recommendation to Knox County Mayor's Office, which then pitches a recommendation to commission.

Knox County already has a ban on guns in parks; however, a new state law will wipe out that come September. The law allows local city and county governments to opt out by passing a new ban.

Chad Bowles wants permit holders to able to carry guns at Sterchi Hills in North Knox County.

"If you've gone through the classes and you're responsible enough to get a gun, you should be able to carry it wherever you want," Bowles said.

Parks and Rec Director Doug Bataille said 26 parks contain ball fields, and some worried about putting a gun in between heated parents, coaches, and referees.

“Guns would probably not be a good addition in that situation," Bataille said.

The ban includes the county's greenways.

Bataille said the board considered allowing guns on them.

"[But] so many of those greenways are connected to either a school or a library; so then we had a real enforcement issue," Bataille said.

Bataille said a uniform ban county-wide would be easier to enforce and easier for citizens to understand.

"I think it's going to end up being a fairly controversial issue," Commissioner Amy Broyles said.

Broyles trusts the board's recommendation.

"I'm a very strong supporter of the Second Amendment; however, there are places where I think guns are inappropriate,” said Broyles. “Parks, especially children's parks, are one of them.”

Commissioner Greg “Lumpy” Lambert believes ban supporters have reloaded the same arguments that misfired against the right to carry at all.

"We've had carry permits over 10 years and they've never been a problem," Lambert said.

The Knox County Commission is set to meet August 24th; however Bataille expects the vote to happen in September.

Knoxville City Council has delayed a vote on continuing a ban in city parks last week. Council's set to vote August 25th.

Gatlinburg and Oak Ridge have already banned guns in parks, along with Memphis and Chattanooga.

So basically,Knox county is saying we are all perfectly safe in their parks and have no reason to defend ourselves? So if I go to a walking path and get attacked, robbed,or raped and since I can't carry my gun I can then file a lawsuit against Knox county -right?all they are doing is taking away my rights as a citizen to protect myself-great job Knox county.
